South Island jockeys

Just a sideline observation, but looking at the ranks of southern riders, it appears  there is more depth and strength in the ranks than a couple of years ago.

Some of the apprentice riders are now in the senior ranks, and overall I don't shake my head as much at the riding standards. But just my observation, maybe I am mellowing in old age

Have you checked some of the Stewards head-on vision?  Still a few flailing unbalanced seagulls......but I try to be harsher on administrators and their tracks than those that have to ride on them.

I'm not , the standard is bloody disgrace , half of them don't know pace and the other half have got no balance . Most races are bloody ugly . Betting down there is lotto .

Why given up punting on them down their. Bar in bigger meetings, where some better jockeys from North come down. All over the show and don't want waste my money on them.

Just watched Maximus Prime win , the ride was a gem , but here is the conundrum , i have always been a fan of Tina C , but recently she has been judging pace poorly IMO , but then comes out with a ride like that , but it seems and it's not confined just to the SI there is no consistency from one ride to the next , and that makes it hard to bet regularly .

Have to be honest i don't believe the level goes up that much more , unless it's Allpress riding for Rae . The overall standard through out NZ has dropped significantly .

Riding well today.

Has ridden well since she resumed from injury.

The only one who can consistently judge pace, well at least better than the rest.

Most have absolutely no idea,  even the incomparable CWJ is, in the twilight of his career, not consistent.

But, when he is on song, still very good.

Makes it tough after putting months of work into a horse though , then they come back with some bullshit story that they expect you to swallow , i used to just grab my horse and say leave the colours by the door , never gave them a chance . They soon worked it out .

What has happened to CWJ? I haven't noticed him recently and he doesn't seem to be suspended or injured. And he has hardly gone for a tropical Island break.

Yeah it’s a pretty sad state of affairs when the best jockeys are all the older ones who should be getting replaced by younger up and coming riders, but there just aren’t any, the standard of riding in the South Island is beyond tragic.

I liked a horse today, but looked up and saw the rider has been winless this season, and only rode 5 winners from 184 rides last season, and saved my money.

You wonder why he calls you a tosser , you ask for it some times .

Of course I know why he calls me a tosser but let's be realistic here there are TWO training partners in that team and I don't believe Matthew gets all the credit he deserves.   I can imagine who is doing all the hard yards early in the morning.

I know what you mean but i've got to the stage where i have to hope that the jock can just do some of the right things or that the horse is good enough to over come the handicap of who's on top . Otherwise i would have 1 bet a week .

For a few years I lived in a room no bigger than a horse box, in that room was 2 bunks.........M R Campbell, J W Walker and L G Ace occupied that room with me, Grant was a kid and still went to school after track work, we were taught by the best, a hard bastard but the best........the difference being, the apprentice system is inherently wrong now, blokes and Sheilas that can't ride a gallop or in fact ride a horse are allowed to apprentice these kids......those allowing that mostly wouldn't know how to ride either, and if they did would fall off if the horse farted........unless there is an adoption of the South African system re an academy with great tutors or, an encouragement to recruit from pony club by incentivised [financially] experienced trainers like Freda and her ilk, any decent rider will bolt NZ as surely Hazel will. The talent is there, it is, but it needs to be nurtured......by the right people, sadly the leadership from Petone is damning and they are incompetent, so, what to do.......I don't live there, doesn't mean I don't care........

There is something being put in place in Auckland by D Nahkle and the guy whose an ex jockey who came from S Africe or Zimbabwe , can't remember his name . It was something that was posted on the NZTR site about 3/4 weeks ago , and here is the rub , it is being done by someone else off their own back because they see a gap in the system , this should be and industry initiative but those whose responsibility it is don't even see the irony that they are posting a story about someone else doing the shit that they are supposed to producing . This is what it has come to , a head body that has no idea about it's responsibilities or simply has no ideas or how to go about them .

I would say " and we wonder why the industry is in the shape it is in " , but unfortunately we are all to aware of why we are in this state .
