comments from trackside presenters

why is it our trackside presenters are so p.c. and unwilling to upset any participants.  Take the race just run at ashburton. Greg o"oconnor tips Majestic Moment as his bet of the day and as the race unfolded in the last 400m I was so plain to see for anyone watching that the drive was as bad as it gets, probably deserving a holiday.  Yet greg oconnor simply brushed it off as bad luck.  Come on Mr O'Connor, grow some balls.

It is similar to the Box Seat. They don't push any boundaries these days. At least the Whale would go against the party line on occasions.

I would rather listen to Jason Teaz and Matt Cross anyway.

As for the drive, with hindsight and watching it a few times, she should have gone wide but the decision she made never unfolded for her. I don't think she can get a holiday for that despite the fact it cost punters a place return at the very least.

Yes it was not a great drive by Sam but it was notified that she wasn’t carrying the whip so they were going to drive it conservatively.

Backed it to win at Rangiora last week in another weak field and should’ve won then.

Had a good return in the race so I won’t complain about Sam’s drive!

Brodie I think you must have been watching a different race.  The one I watched had the driver on the $2 favourite switch from a position where it had the chance to improve without any chance of being blocked in,to take up a position behind 3 and four walls of horses in front of her.   carrying the whip has no relevance to whether you take the option of a clear run,or take the option of putting your horse where it cant win.  Remember this was only with 400m to run.                            It will be interesting to read how the stipes deal with this,as in my opinion the drive was as bad as it gets.    As far as that side of things go,they really have no option but to open an inquiry as they set a precedent when they, quite rightly, looked into the drive of john morrison on mr midnight at ashburton a month or so ago.     Im not of the opinion either cases were not trying, just both drives did not come anywhere near a reasonable standard.                       As for mr O'Connor,he does a great job,but really in what other sports do broadcasters fail to give an opinion for fear of upsetting someone.  The irony of this case is that the first to admit it was a shocker drive would be the driver.

Galah,  yes  I agree it was not a great drive as far as the punters that backed the horse goes!

It was a great drive for me though due to the fact that I would not have got a substantial return if it had have been a better drive!

Well done to you brodie.    Just read the stipes report. Notes the horse was held up in the straight but fails to note it was driven away from a clear run.  Did not even ask why. In my opinion the stipes have let themselves  and punters down. Hard not to think they apply the rules differently to some drivers when you see things like that. I thought they had moved past the double standards.

I see the stipes report has since been updated to include an explanation from miss ottley.  A bit odd.  Back to my original point,She often gets deserved  praise from the presenters, surely they can make informed comments about each race without having to filter their comments.,do they really think drivers are that precious that they cant say anything negative.

I agree. Makes it boring and mundane when it is the same old same old back patting and in some cases arse licking commentary.

People want a bit of controversy and excitement in their lives on a grim Sunday afternoon  - give them a reason to watch. How many partners around New Zealand hate having trackside on the TV because it is so monotonous. Turn Trackside into a TV drama.....

As for the update. Odd indeed.

Galah, there are many very poor drives at every meeting and nothing is said, except the amateur races where they are hammered.

" Miss Ottley explained that the three wide line had failed to progress forward resulting in her becoming poorly positioned towards the rear of the field"

Thats why it was an incompetent drive she never put the horse in the race. Its not the other drivers fault for not moving it is her fault for not inching around the field to the death like last start.

Gee the drivers must really have a good chuckle to themselves as they can literally say anything they like and the stipes just agree.

Note to drivers: Put Sams comment in the excuse book the next time you find yourself in the same situation.

It happens all the time.

My tip of the day, The Golden Boy, went back at the start, stayed there, went the rails. Stipes say held up early and middle of the straight.

They obviously not trying to hammer the horse again after its last run at Blenheim but if it was going to win it needed to go off the gate like it can. You could tell in the score up it wasn't going to go off the gate...so that was that, especially if one is not trying to get into it mid-race.

As Brodie said, there are heaps of poor or ultra-conservative drives at every meeting. Most times people just don't see them.

I agree.

On a $20 shot not many would notice or care, but on a $2.00 hot favorite that went around and sat parked last start and was narrowly beaten, to not put the horse in the race today deserves more than a slap on the hand.

She would be doing a few days on the sidelines for that drive in other countries.

I got a couple of dollars of the place six that would have been a quarter of the price had she placed, so I am like Brodie, she did me a favor in the end, but still would be good to see the stipes grow a pair in these situations.

Personally, and a few will strongly disagree, I don't think it matters what price they are paying.

A driver has to take all reasonable measures to give its horse a chance to win the race, favourite or not. Just hot pot punters get burnt so they have to appease the punters, or in this case and most cases....they don't!

Wet bus ticket time.

Note: Ricky Alfield who droves Sans Le Sou got fined twice to a tune of $400 for half carting for 400 metres and using his whip a couple too many times. What does that tell one about what is important?

Thats the sort of driver I want on the ones I back! Sacrificing his money to get the win.

Well done Ricky although I thought you eased up a bit on the line there. Suppose if you got beat could just say due to the 10 hit rule I had to stop hitting. Nothing they could do.
