nomates
It was bad enough that they couldn't give the CD a meeting for it's anniversary day and but a meeting on at Matamata , well now i see they have moved that to Wednesday , so no meeting on a public holiday for people to have a bet , but there is a meeting on Thursday at Otaki , great when everyone is back at work , FFS really , this really isn't rocket science , more like weird science , put on a meeting when you have a captive audience on holiday and looking for something to do you pratts . I really give up , what hope when they can't get the simple things right .
Bloke
The problem with holding race meetings on public holidays is that the clubs have to pay holiday wages. Both Hawkes Bay and Otaki moved away from public holidays over the New Year. I talked to a Hawkes Bay Official who claimed that they saved $15k in wages by holding their meeting on 31 December rather than 1 January. In the past higher wages would have been no problem but crowds have started dwindle in recent years . Tauherenikau gets massive crowds happy to pay $20 entry fee so they have no problem holding their meetings on January 2 and Waitangi Day/ Monday.

I went to Otaki on the 5th of Jan and they charged $10 to get in and there were plenty there , as for staff i didn't see an abundance of them , i thought the guys selling the food in the members was an outside business and the 3/4 eating options in the public areas were private concerns so they wouldn't affect the clubs bottom line , can't say regarding the bars . I would suggest get the product better and more people will attend , but i know it is a battle getting people to attend , as we know never used to be but complacency has been their worst enemy . As for Hawkes Bay my understanding was that the day was shifted because they though having HB and Tauherenikau day after day was affecting fields for both , although i didn't get what a day between was going to solve , but as with the rest of the calendar it all needs an overhaul .

Not completely sure but i think Wellington , Manawatu and Wairarapa . What would i do ? what i wouldn't have done is fuck with a perfectly great Wellington Cup Carnival for the sake of a sales company , whilst not perfect the Sat, Mon, Sat was better than the complete clusterf@#k that we have now . Maybe better just to do Sat , Sat and let another local club have Anniversary Monday , the meeting this Saturday is a complete non event , just another day , has no connection to the Cup carnival what so ever. But it is all good we have the absolutely fabulous Karaka Millions on Saturday to look forward to , which this year as a racing purist appears a little light on previous years , IMO .

Sorry I will clarify. When I say that they have to pay staff holiday wages it is the tote staff.

I am certain I can recall some people who should know a lot better describing that karaka thing as one of NZ's best race-days last year. Bloody hell. A 6 race card, a third of them sweepstakes. And for some bizarre reason the rest of the country fires in about $670,000 to boost the sweepstakes. 7 accepters in one of them. I will listen in with interest to see if George calls it his favourite raceday. It has certainly destroyed the Cup meeting at Trentham. I can recall the days when two CD meetings used to race on Anniversary Day. They have really just given up these days. I suppose the Awapuni AWT will save CD racing. Something to look forward to with anticipation. 1 1

I have been to a Karaka Millions night , Vespa won , a fantastic evening with a fantastic crowd and atmosphere , but i can with hand on heart say i have been to way better Wellington Cup days and Bayer Classic days . In isolation the KM meetings is a must keep , but it costs the industry money , and it gets it profile , but the cost to the wider industry is all but catastrophic , we can't have a meeting just for the feel good effect . As i said the whole calendar needs complete overhaul , where the industry works for the industry as a whole not just ramming big noting events where ever they want . Doomed i remember when they ran a highweight as the first of the day at Trentham then all the heavy lads jumped in cars and headed up to Palmy for the Ashurst Pohingina highweight , both of us showing our age bud . 3

It is a bit ironic when people claim on course attendances don't matter anymore and what does it matter how many go to Kumara and other popular meetings, but when it comes to Karaka it's a great meeting because of all the people who turn up and what a great atmosphere. Its just a pity none of them ever turn up to any other meetings.

An absolute snorefest this year, one of the most alarming things I have seen lately is the jockeys asked in intereviews which race they would most like to win in NZ. Not a Derby, not an Oaks, nor a Cup race but the Karaka Million ....

I remember saying this last year , J Richards had just trained the first 3 or 4 home in the 2yo million and had watched it in the bar area , and as the camera was on him as they crossed the line and some well known racing people were congratulating him , i couldn't get over the number of people in the back ground that were just talking and completely unaware that the race was running , clearly just there for the social event , some right by TV's and not the least bit interested .
nomates
So much for me bitching about the CD missing out on holiday raceday , i have just noticed that NZTR haven't programmed a meeting for Auckland Anniversary Monday either , has their policy now become not to programme meetings when people are free and looking for some entertainment . I would have thought as with the Wellington Anniversary that holiday Monday would have more of an audience than a midweek . They obviously have research telling them people wont bet on a holiday weekend but will when they are work . Just as well we are in such capable hands .
Turny
Sadly the time honored Trentham Cup carnival is no more. Very sad but that's the reality. Let's hope the don't shag around with Cup Week in Canterbury which is now known as The Bloom Festival, not Cup Week. Sadly nothing would surprise me so I am prepared 1

Turny
CCC call it The Bloom Festival, as displayed on the street posts via their pennants Crazy, but true and no doubt some marketing guru got a good retainer to come up with it .... absurd
