Hands Down no 1 for me, i know there are many that went quicker etc, but he is my fav. Going to those August meetings at Addington always got me excited for cup time.

Great mare Armalight comes in at no 2. Amazing record, went some big races at the end of her career against the very best.

Inky Lord in at no 3, mainly just for his cup win, amazing effort after getting knocked over on home turn.

Terrror To Love for his 3 nz cup wins at no 4, and dead heat for no 5, laz and flashing red.

I know, they are all cup winners, and my favs over the years. Only 3 months till cup!

I'd almost be the same, but would probably prefer Elsu or possibly Christen Me or Just An Excuse to Courage Under Fire. The latter was an incomparably great 2 and 3yo, but was shaded by some of the others as an open class horse.

Actually, thinking about it a little more, maybe I'd go for Yulestar. He's the only one apart from Lazarus to have won both a Cup and an ID Grand Final. Not only that, but he was the first, and only for quite some time, Cup winner to run under 4.00, and his ID win was in Oz. Yep, I'll put Yulestar in instead of CUF.

Hands down, Bonnie's chance, armalight, Christian Cullen. Lord module. No room for Lazarus in my top picks due to lack of serious competition in nz. The others were racing against other champions in every big race.

These kinds of discussions are always fun because one can never be proved wrong.? So I'll bite. Would you really say Smolda, Tiger Tara, Heaven Rocks, Dream About Me, Christen Me, and Franco Nelson were really not 'serious competition'? Perhaps not in the sense they were, with the benefit of hindsight, ever likely to actually beat Lazarus, but that just reflects the extraordinary magnitude of his dominance, not any lack of quality on their part.

The other thing that (for me) makes Lazarus stand apart is that he could win away from home. Lord Module hardly ever raced outside the SI, while Hands Down was a shadow of himself away from Addington. Neither even tried to beat the Aussies on their home soil, and nor did Armalight or Bonnie's Chance.  By contrast, Lazarus went, saw, and conquered. On multiple occasions.

I see where your coming from Harewood, I'm not going on times as tracks are 10 times as fast now, but excitement and Pure crowd pleasing? I can't deny Lazarus is a champion horse but I couldn't name a champion horse he beat, well not one I personally would call an all time great either here or Australia. The crowds that used to flock to see hands down and delightful Lady(can't believe I left her out) I doubt we will see again.

Think you will find both hands down and lord module both races in oz.

I have said this before but it will require a Bonecrusher -  Waverley Star scenario repeated a few times with a bit of drama thrown in.

A genuine rivalry with a bit of needle without the sanitized script of today's coverage.

All the big races in the 80s were covered by tv 1 I used to be very excited at thought of staying up to watch them live

I think you'll find hands down spent the majority of his racing life coming from a back Mark and 3 wide for the last lap!

You would have to say Christian Cullen was the most followed horse in the last 20 or so years. Maybe it was that he looked so good, omeara trained that made it a horse to get behind. Remember dobson giving away free caps etc also.

Derek jones also took blossom lady on travels too, i remember turning up outside a tab in chch.

Funny how some horses get real following while others not so much

Remember that too....looking at all of the horses racing...we have sure been lucky.

While I liked hands down....the mares of the 80s really did more than compete with the males, maybe even better.

Delightful lady, bonniez chance, armalight, glen moria, hilarious guest, glen moria....be some I have forgotten.....don't think we will ever see as many top class mares competing at once again....

Terror to Love, Christen Me and Iraklis never did it for me. Especially as I liked Robert Cameron horses in the case of Iraklis but I think it was because he never beat any 'stars' in NZ. I could be way off the mark but that era was weak in my opinion.

Take care, sweet jesica, jilaires chance, miss clevedon, katys command. Very good mares indeed around this time.

As i live in sth island, apart from major races, didnt really get behind delightful lady, but what a great mare. 47 wins from 141 starts

Mea culpa. Now that I bother looking up the records, I see you're absolutely right. Although in HD's case it was one campaign of 3 starts for 3 ducks-eggs. LM did have more goes over a couple of campaigns and even won a couple of races in the process. Nothing of much note though, so I'd argue the substance of my previous post remains.?
