The Real standard of NZ racing

For a window into the parlous state of NZ racing one only has to look at the Livamol on Saturday . Soldier Boy , who has won a R65 and aR76 at his last 2 starts , one a midweek 14k race both with a claiming apprentice up , is down to start in one of NZ's premier WFA races and has opened at 10's . Now i know a large part of that is down the forecast heavy track and his ability on rain affected surfaces , and this is not a knock on the horse , i have always liked him , but this shows how thin our ranks of quality horses is .

This is only going to get worse if the powers that be do not start finding solutions to slow the drain of horses out of NZ .

The one positive is because our group 1s are so weak we do at least get decent sized fields. Aussie has had several 6 horse fields going around in group 1s recently.

It's raining here in the Bay. Soldier Boy will beat more home than will beat him I'm picking. Don't forget he did finish fourth in the Derby after doing plenty of work in the race.

Probably because there is better money on offer in the "novelty" races?

More often it is because there is either a standout horse of champion status or nearly in the race.  Plus a other 5 not far off.  All with ratings at least in the low 100's.  That's true international ratings of course.
