    • Vinnie was fabulous . He drove like a maniac. was eternally happy with his horses ( but not with women sadly) and should of won that Auckland race. Poppy Shot 4 lengths clear 400m out and spent all his pennies.  Had the race well won if he didn't think he could just win it by 6 lengths lol. he was pretty cranky about that Gammalite win.  Leap To Fame and Lazarus race similar ? just too strong. You would of seen Lazarus gate speed. Was just normal ? but just sit outside them and win anyway. Dixon has well over 5000 race wins and no every inch of Albion , and driving the best horse in the world. No way could little Rakero Rebel hold him in with a 25 year old driver not as familiar with his horse and the track. poor bugger got left parked out for the trip too. she wasn't a hope anyway. What the race needed was some TEAM driving. Sanderson needed to attack before they were a lap out with Sure Thing Captain , and give the Stablemate Speak The Truth the last shot from the trail. A Small problem is that Larry is Full bore at the half mile every race anyway. and no-one can get near him from the front let alone the back of field 😂🤣 Larry Ran 26.5 both the last 2 quarters for a 53 second last half mile.  you can't even win from the trailing position with leader going that fast. 😅   NZ Cup looks to be Aussie bound again .
    • funny thing is i think that actually was a good start. Birdy was moving forward a wee bit like you sa,y but they were in a reasonably fair line.. from my observations, there was a deliberate attempt a couple of months ago to have them standing and giving them all a fair start and it seemed to be getting to a point where it was working. But just recently they have gone back to giving slightly moving starts and you are again seeing the people drawn in the middle, who  are on the last horse to turn in from the  the pre race circle, being disadvanteged. They often still aren't getting fair starts . and why is that, well its because some of the drivers are more worried about being told off for getting a running start than they are about getting their horse in an advantageous spot before they say go. You see,the last horse to turn in from the pre race circle has to be the last horse moving forward. I.e.,because its the last horse to turn in. so you see the  clever ,very confident drivers keep walking up to take up their position when the started is saying stand and you see the less clever, not as confident drivers stop and stand when the started says stand, even if they haven't ahd a chance to get into their position. If you watch it,you can tell who they are as it happens often enough to see a pattern.   but as i said, the race you've highlighted was as good a start as you would get for non win trotters.
    • now that interdominion final was a real horse race. I think you pulled off the trail a fair way from home from memory.you were swatting flies with the whip non stop from that point.2 great horses and the people involved really different  characters. Trainers/drivers these days don't seem quite as colourful,if thats the right word.  as to leap to fame,he wouldn't have been able to come off if the horse ourside him was slightly ahead of him.and given leap to fames average gate speed on the night it looked tom me an opportunity lost. leap to fame and dixon has got those aussie drivers beaten in their heads before they even start.Nz drivers  can be negative sometimes ,but  if you had some nz drivers in those races you would have seen better tactical driving. Where was b orange when we needed him.
    • The Lindsay Park team of Ben, Will and J D Hayes are excited by the progress their New Zealand bred stables stars are making in preparation for their spring campaigns. Mr Brightside (NZ) (Bullbars) is back galloping and is due for a jump-out early next month as he gears towards a first-up run in the Gr.1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 30. The gelding was just pipped in that race last year by Pinstriped before returning to winning form in Gr.1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington two weeks later. Ben Hayes said Mr Brightside looks better in condition this time around that what he did 12 months ago after campaigning later into the season. Mr Brightside travelled to Hong Kong, finishing last in the Gr.1 Champions Mile at Sha Tin in April and had his spell at the Spotswood quarantine facility upon his return. “He had his first gallop last Monday and did it well,” Hayes said. “Compared to other years, he’s got a really good coat for this time of year and looks really healthy and is possibly a bit more forward at the same time as he’s been previously. “His regular rider Ross commented on it and us three boys all agree. “His action is good, and he seems a happy horse.” Hayes said Mr Brightside would have another gallop during the week and is being geared towards having a jump-out on the course proper at Flemington on August 4. Mr Brightside would then have another jump-out at Flemington prior to his first-up out in the Memsie Stakes. “He’s a horse that generally doesn’t have a big spell,” Hayes said. “We were able to give him one last year and he probably peaked first-up and got beaten, but then he came out and won. “I think he’s very forward. He’s only turning eight and we’re delighted to have him around.” The stable will give Evaporate (NZ) (Per Incanto) the task of maintaining Lindsay Park’s domination of the Gr.2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield on August 16 as attempts to give the stable its fourth consecutive win in the event. “He’s one of the more exciting horses in our stable. He’s very untapped; he had a lot of bad luck last preparation,” Hayes said. “I’m really happy with him. He’s grown really well and he should have a big spring.” Hayes said Evaporate’s main aim at this stage was $10 million The Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill on November 1, although he didn’t rule out another tilt at a Gr.1 Cox Plate if his form warranted it. Last spring Evaporate won the Gr.2 Stutt Stakes at The Valley and was third in the Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas before finishing last in the Cox Plate. Evaporate returned in the autumn where he finished fourth in the Gr.1 Futurity Stakes before running an unlucky second in The Kiwi at Ellerslie. He then had one more start, which was an easy win in the Gr.3 Carbine Club Stakes at Randwick. Evaporate pleased Hayes with his win in an 800m jumpout at Flemington on Friday. “Evaporate trialled very well on Friday. He looks to have come back very well and he will have another trial on August 4.” Meanwhile War Machine (NZ) (Harry Angel), who provided Lindsay Park with their first win in the Gr.1 Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm when successful last month, is back at the stable’s country property at Euroa preparing for his return. Hayes said War Machine was being aimed at a first-up run in the Gr.1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on AFL Grand Final eve in late September. He said the stable also hopes to get an invite for The Everest. “He’s arrived safe and sound and is back in work,” Hayes said. “We’re probably looking at running in the Manikato first-up. Going into that fresh and then hopefully The Everest, if he gets invited. “The Manikato is two weeks before The Everest, so it will fit well, then there is the $3 million race two weeks after that in Sydney and then we can come back down here for the C F Orr Stakes.” The Gr.1 C F Orr Stakes (1400m) has been transferred from its traditional autumn date to be run in mid-November this year. • Bevan and Robyn Wilson brought a formidable trio of chances into Sunday’s Crombie and Price Ltd Oamaru Cup (1600m) and all three ran with great merit, but none more so that the winner, Royal Valour (NZ) (Belardo). The Ashburton couple had accepted into the feature with Royal Valour, Lord Darci and Victorian Charm, all of which they bred and own, and each horse was well-fancied in the market, closing second, third and fourth favourite behind Iffididit. As anticipated, Royal Valour was a stride slow away from the barriers and jockey Bridget Grylls took advantage of her inside draw, sliding through to settle just worse than midfield. Regular frontrunner Vamos took up the pacemaking role and ran along at a solid tempo, with Lord Darci in his trail. Winning contenders lined up across the home straight to set up a grandstand finish, and coming powering through the centre was Royal Valour, who caught Vamos at the 50m and kept finding to salute by three-quarters of a length from a storming He’s Tunza Grunt. Vamos was just a half-head adrift in third placing, with Lord Darci, Iffididit, Victorian Charm and Bauble all within two lengths of the winner. Grylls had watched on when Royal Valour claimed the top spot last start at Ashburton, and she was rapt to get the job done when given her opportunity by the Wilsons.   “He won really well last start at Ashburton with Hayley on board, he just loves this sort of track,” Grylls said. “I knew we’d get back and he’d be strong in the finish. “He was a little bit slow out of the barriers which isn’t unusual for him, I stuck there along the inside which is getting quite cut up now but I tracked the Wilson’s other horse (Lord Darci) into it. “He changed leg and I knew he was going to be in for the fight. “Even to have three in the race with form like that is a great achievement in itself, and they all went pretty well.” A son of Belardo, Royal Valour is out of another homebred Wilson mare in Royal Governess, who won three races in her career. In the broodmare paddock, Royal Governess also produced four-time winner Madam Sequoia and Guvnor, who won two races before being sold to Hong Kong. In Sunday’s success, Royal Valour brings his overall stakes to over $142,000, with seven wins and six minor placings from 34 starts. The Oamaru Cup is a key lead-in for southern horses heading towards the Gr.3 Winning Edge Presentations Winter Cup (1600m), and in the pre-nomination TAB market, Royal Valour and Lord Darci – a former winner of the race – sit as $18 hopes.
