Only a fool would dispute their achievements Gamma. I don't believe anyone is doing that. The All Stars set the benchmark and set it very high. They will continue winning quality races but there is a change unfolding regarding their once invincible dominance. As much as I respect the family and their achievements, I don't feel the same sets of owners taking the cream off the cake season after season is good thing for the game. Perhaps that's why horses like Franco Ice, The Bru Czar, Dillon Dale and Dean etc etc were big favs. They always had to do it the hard way and at times against opposition prepared to use their numerical advantage to nullify them even if that meant deploying a sacrificial lamb. Perhaps I'm an idealist at heart. I love a good fight but it needs to be a fair fight

PS......enjoyed the full viewing screen of races on the TAB platform. Unsure why that wasn't in place from the off but better late than never.

I must admit despite not wagering I enjoyed the racing last night. John Dunn put on a driving clinic. He drives with a belief he's on the best and fittest horse and invariably he is. The Welcome Stakes told a powerful story. The more the race progressed the more it looked like the name Dunn would be saluting and the best the All Stars could hope for even with Blair driving was a placing. That is light years from what we've been witnessing for at least the last decade. Have to be impressed with how strong Got The Chocolates is late in races. Dominates them. John ensures he's not caught blocked in a hopeless position and is acutely aware of where his opposition is. He took a sustained look behind him for the All Star Rubira with a round to go in the Welcome Stakes. This reminded me in absolutely no way whatsoever what Brent Barclay did at Winton last weekend on the hot pot that was a certainty beaten. What I especially enjoyed was the authenticity of the races I watched. Great drive by young Carter on Ebury Street and his followers would have been delighted with the price. I liked seeing Takeitout not gifting the race to Tokyo Rose. If Sam gets her way in front it's often game over. Takeitout turned it into a race. John Dunn on the winner Ideal Double owes Tim a beer. Bet N Win looking the real deal. Great to see. Would love a share in him. Auckland Trots provided a few talking points. The betting on Escape Artist and the lack thereof with stablemate Better Knuckle Up was telling. As was the manner in which both were driven. One driven to win.....no comment on the other. Not sure what to make of the run of Don't Stop Dreaming. Was asked to do the impossible despite the number of big races he's had over many months. The usual dynamic in such races is the All Stars controlling the race from the outset and the result appearing a formality almost from the off. That important aspect was not evident. Is Don't Stop Dreaming a tired horse that has lost his edge? Just asking. Don't want to go the early crow as horses can make a fool of you very quickly. Empire City was well driven by Rick. The schoolgirl interview with Phil post race was cringe. Surely we can do better than that? What audience is Trackside aiming at there? School leavers? Muscle Mountain got it badly wrong in the Rowe Cup last year but still ran huge. Looks like the Hope's are keen to put that right next week. Muscle Mountain looked back to his best but the Aussie raider will be very very hard to beat. Oscar Bonavena looks tired to my eye. He raced on heart last night but didn't have that sharpness in the straight. Ben Hope seemed to shut the gate abruptly on Mark just as he was going for the run between Ben and the horse on the inner. Didn't see the head on but there is real potential there for something nobody wants to see. I won't taint my current buzz on harness racing by watching the Invercargill workouts today.

the All Stars are losing top billing? We know Mark rules the roost but now has other ventures etc on his radar. Nathan is a good trainer but he's light years away from being in the same league as his dad. Just lately the All Stars no longer look invincible in races they usually dominate season after season. Brother Barry, the Dunn's and the Telfer's have been snapping at the heels of the All Stars for a few seasons and even poking their noses in front. Are we about to see them put more than just their noses in front?

In 1977 I drove from Nelson to Christchurch to see Royce's star Glide Time take on Motu Prince and Main Star in the Welcomes Stakes. He prevailed and it was a very pleasant drive home the next day. I've always looked forward to the race at Easter along with the time honoured Easter Cup. The race has been won by some great horses. Lordship, Noodlum, Tuapeka Knight, Christian Cullen, Courage Under Fire etc but over the last decade or so it lost some of it's gloss for me. Mark Purdon has a great eye for picking up quality horses and owners with deep pockets to back his judgement. The All Stars have dominated the fields numerically and with the results year after year. I don't resent that but also don't enjoy seeing the same people scooping up all the spoils season after season. The Welcome Stakes almost became a game of musical chairs with the only question being which All Star would win? I was delighted to see Katie Cox and It's Tough get over the top of the six horse field in 2023 and break a well worn routine. The timing of this race has been changed. It was traditionally run at Easter which many embraced. Now it's mid May. It's also been elevated to Group One status. That's a bit of a head scratcher for me. I appreciate it's been a G2 for some time and has been a G1 previously. It just doesn't look and feel like a G1 to me in the way the NZ Cup etc is a G1. Can't help thinking we are putting too much focus on races like this and not enough on the traditional time honoured races. I'm incredulous at the scrapping of the Easter Cup. Our best race is and always will be for me the NZ Cup. When you look at who could win the two mile feature in November your best guide was the two mile Easter Cup. This was the Easter feature I most looked forward to. The race hasn't just been moved like the Welcome Stakes, it's been dumped despite it's significance to NZ Harness racing. WTF? Are we prioritizing the wrong races? Breeders and owners won't agree but they don't fill the infield at Addington. . What a treat that must have been to see the mighty Grey Way win his 50th. I'm pretty sure he won his 51st and final win was at Rangiora.
-
I didn't know the brodster was a Museum piece Rangatira. Was wondering what to get him for his birthday but have now narrowed it down to two choices. First option has an area ideal for his race book, bifocals, flask of hot tea and cheese scone his good lady made for him.
-
I've got my names screwed up Galah. I see Flying View won the 1980 Telegraph for L H Pratt....not L Dobbs. S Laming rode. I assume that's Shane Laming? Is he related to Bevan. They had a good one called "Midnight" that had a story with it. I'm confident Flying View was a Mainlander from the South Canterbury area. Would like to see who he beat in the Telegraph. I can recall him bombing them late as was his way. Arbre Chene won it the year before and won the Railway in 1980.
-
That's him Galah. An impressive grey that would have run in the Telegraph and also the big Canterbury sprint. May even have run in the Railway and Concorde. He was a beauty and you got the colours right. I thought the age of the guy Nigel interviewed and how long ago Flying View raced didn't marry up but the name sure did.
-
There's a couple of solid names from the past Rangatira. I remember both well plus several others Peter had numerous wins with. He was a regular visitor to Nelson and the Coast year after year and rarely returned back to base without a winner. Good to see him still in the game after so many years.

Some very good points Gamma but I dispute one of them. You say Brent only had a moment in time to make the decisions. If you go back and watch the replay you'll see he could have eaten a Big Mac in the time he had to make that decision. He had clear air for several hundred metres. He knew the runs from behind would come and that if he didn't move at least to the outside of Big Boys Toys he would find himself "all dressed up with nowhere to go"....hate that bollocks but there you go. What concerns me is the following. It was a rookie mistake but Brent is light years away from being a rookie. The connection between Brent and the trainer / driver of the winner at long odds. The fact no questions were asked and the Stewards completely skipped over the most important aspect of Major Medley's run with their review. Anyway, onward and upwards. I've pointed out previously that I've been a student of form for decades. I made a successful living off my wagering all while my children with all their needs and wants were growing up. I paid for our North Shore, Auckland home almost exclusively from gambling. I concede that was prior to Auckland house prices moving to Cuckoo land. My point is I know how to read races and know what I witnessed at Winton. I wouldn't blame anyone that suggested it was possibly not an error.
-
I watched that interview Galah. Was an excellent watch as Nigel's fly on the wall interviews are. Gave a good insight into him and the horse. Is that the same guy that trained the good sprinter Flying View back in the day?
-
I see that run differently Nowornever. Context is always important. I've pointed out on here that Heartbreak Hotel is not short on ability and will win races. His ring craft however is still a work in progress. The reason he finished so far behind them previously was entirely related to him blowing to bits, rather than not being good enough. He went around yesterday in one piece and ran a confidence building third. Once Gavin can put more pressure on him in races he'll win his share for sure. What will he do next week? Who knows which is why it's called gambling.

I have mentioned the $1.70 starting price several times Gamma but only because I do feel it's relevant. I don't believe I'm "fixated' on it. I am however fixated on all races being authentic and Stewards ask questions when events unfold during the race worthy of inspection and answers. Why do we have passing lanes? To keep frustration levels down with punters or to please trainers and drivers? I know dozens of trainers and drivers. Some are just contacts while others are close friends. Two have grand records in Group 1 races. Most are not complimentary toward passing lanes and refer to them as the "cheats lane". Why do we have mobile starts? I remember back in the day numerous trainers that were true masters of getting horses away from the stand. From a punting perspective watching your horse blow to bits at the start and either get pulled up or trail the field in a different post code is not a good look or feel. If you want punters to return to the track that is not the way to do it. Many people around you are excited in the home straight but you've already got your head down looking at the next race. Personally, I prefer standing starts. That's part of the reason I embrace the NZ Cup, Dominion Handicap, Rowe Cup etc etc. It's old school but I feel most punters probably prefer mobile starts to ensure they are not left cold at the start. In most races you'll find an unlucky runner or perhaps several. Some of those runners often feature as unlucky because they need to be driven for luck. As soon as I confirm that I know the horse has limitations so factor that in to my wagering. If an odds on pot ran a shocker then a question should be asked on behalf of the punters who wagered their hard earned in good faith. Not because there is anything dodgy going on but for transparency. Punters may find there was a genuine reason for the poor run and as a result will stay with the ship. What was said in the Stewards report about Major Medley was a load of perfunctory twaddle. Of course the horse was blocked in the straight. Blind Freddy could see that and also see Brent gave what appeared to be a 100% effort in the straight to obtain the best placing. That however is not the issue. It's what unfolded 500 metres earlier that really matters as that is exactly what dictated him winning or losing. No question was even asked about that. You don't see an issue there where as I'm incredulous at what I witnessed which was "potentially" deliberate. I love harness racing but anyone who tells you there is no skullduggery in the game is pulling your chain. Thankfully, there's very little of it but it does exist. If no banned substances are involved it can be difficult to prove. Racehorse management is an important aspect of a horses career, especially it's longevity. Trainers know what times they run in certain grades and what time their charge is capable of running. If you had a trotter for example that you could routinely pick up cheque's for placings month in month out, the prize money adds up. It can also be a reliable source of income via place betting at the TAB. If that runner wins a race too soon he'll get one pay cheque and then struggle in the next grade. Training horses is an expensive business. Too expensive to shoot yourself in the foot and keep going around for SFA. Penalty free events can be a Godsend. There are several trainers around Canterbury especially that manage the careers of horses with limited ability to an absolute tee. If punters are paying attention they know what they will likely get. No skullduggery involved, just sensible and practical racehorse career management. I didn't have a bean on Major Medley but was filthy watching what unfolded. It was a bad look that warranted questions being asked. As I stated with the Mo'unga charade in the Westport Cup, if questions are not asked it ensures more of the same will occur regardless of how blatant it is. Harness Racing competes for the discretionary $.....It's good sport.....but it's not that good.
-
I watched him with interest Shad. Very pleased to see him get around in one piece. Didn't try and do too much. Didn't go around a horse. Ran home well on the inner for a solid confidence building third. A couple more of those will likely see Gav feeling like he do more in his races. You're right about patience especially with unruly trotters. I'd wager that third gave Gavin a lot of satisfaction and encouragement. The first two home are no slugs so the form in the race will stack up.
-
I'm a punter and don't expect my horse to win all the time. I hope they do otherwise I wouldn't wager on them. I feel most punters are the same. Even on my best days on track, not all my wagers win.
-
$1.70 fav is a hot fav regardless if it's in a Group 1 or a low grade meeting a step up from trials. The $ is worth the same as is the obligation to obtain the best possible placing. There is a possibility that this hot fav got blocked in by design. It wasn't a rookie mistake as Brent is no rookie. Major Medley did no work sitting quietly smoking his pipe. Barclay could have pulled the trigger at any time but remarkably refused to move until his winning chance has all but been extinguished. It was almost farcical to drive that way and then be desperately climbing over them in the straight. The two actions don't marry up. Sleeping and desperate. I'm genuinely shocked you'd ask "what's the problem?" You're aware who trained and drove the horse Brent refused to go around that won at fixed odds of $34? You're aware of the connection between the two? To my eye, had Barclay moved to the outside of Big Boys Toys when he had every opportunity to do so, he wins the race on his ear. Simple as that. That's the problem. $1.70 favs get rolled so routinely we don't give most a second thought. Same applies to horses being unlucky. The way this race unfolded and the result is worth a lot more than a second thought. You can't see that Gammalite. Fair enough but don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining.
-
Forgiveness is a funny mare that has been giving headaches for a while now. She's a lot more solid this season but still has work to be done on her ring craft. Paul Nairn was questioned recently by Stewards also at Ashburton over his apparent lack of vigor in the home straight when runner up. I feel his priority at the moment is not winning with the horse but building ring craft and confidence but any placings picked up along the way are a bonus. That's my take on the way he's driving Forgiveness anyway.
-
Brent started out as a Junior in 1990 some 34 years ago. He's had over 9000 drives and won 888 races. He knows exactly when to move in a race and just as importantly, when not to move. I don't believe he was caught napping yesterday with Major Medley. Had that been a junior driver you'd be pulling him / her to one side and painting some pictures for them. When a driver is nailed down like the horse he / she is acutely aware where others are and when they will likely make their moves. He'll also hear them like alarm bells going off. I'm incredulous at what unfolded there. It destroys important wagering confidence and accountability when questionable actions unfold. Stewards should return their pay cheque for not even bothering to ask the question of Brent Barclay. Yes, he was blocked for room in the home straight. Blind Freddy could see that ffs. It's what unfolded prior to the home straight and more importantly in this case, what didn't happen. There may have been an innocent explanation for why Brent didn't move and cost the horse and an army of punters the win. We'll never know now because the Stewards didn't bother asking the question. I'm aware he was going to win easily as fav first up only to have an issue late in the race. One would assume they wouldn't start the horse one week later unless they had addressed that issue. The horse was obviously balanced up in the home straight at Winton and would have won with a clear run. Why drive for luck when you're going well enough to make your own luck? Confidence comes from transparency. No transparency = No confidence = No wagering. Declaring my hand here. I had nothing on Major Medley. Despite there being several Group 1's recently my last punt was on Mo'unga in the Westport Cup. I do however retain a strong interest in almost all harness meetings. I've recommended to contacts / friends in both Canterbury and Auckland horses I see going around at trials and race meetings that I recommend they try and secure. Major Medley is a nice horse who will win his share for sure. I wish the connections well.
-
Oh well....they'll get a new reliable wagering platform sorted out at some point in the future. No problem
-
Can't fault the winner Shad. Big run. You're right about the Stewards. Questions were not even asked. Remarkable. The horse was paying $1.70 and Brent Barclay is a very experienced driver and must surely have known what would unfold if he didn't move when afforded every opportunity. I believe Major Medley was going well enough to move at the appropriate time and win. My observations throughout the race and the way he finished left me with little doubt. Impossible not to feel disillusioned when what unfolded with a hot fav is not even questioned by Stewards. Race 4 MM BRANDS MOBILE PACE Show Video MCDOLMIO - driver M Williamson elected to start from the Unruly position due to the gelding displaying unfavourable manners in its preliminary. Slow to leave the pre-race circle however was in the Unruly position at the start. Weakened final bend. Placed on the Unruly for future mobile starts. MAJOR MEDLEY - held up for clear racing room until the middle stages of the run home. RYLAN CHARLIE - paced roughly for a few strides near the 120m and shifted out having to be straightened by driver S O'Reilly. BUCKIE DUNDEE - over-raced in the early stages when being restrained to take cover. Raced wide from the 700m. Weakened final bend. MATAI LIZZIE - over-raced in the early stages when being restrained to take cover. Weakened final bend. BIG BOYZ TOY - the blinds were removed prior to the start due to the gelding warming up unfavourably.

for Race 4 @ Winton today. Major Medley paying $1.70 driven by Brent Barclay "appeared" to be doing handstands in the one-one sit. It almost looked a times and margins job for the entire race. Blind Freddy would know, hear and even see horses making their runs inside the last 600. Brent didn't move. Nek minute he's gone from being a good thing to virtually no hope. Caller described Major Medley as being "unlucky" but was he? Perhaps there was an issue with the horse I couldn't see? Race was won by Big Boys Toys trained and driven by Kirstin Green paying $34 fixed odds.

Tonight's three year old Group 1 @ Addington. How will it unfold?
Walt replied to Walt's topic in Trotting Chat
Thanks Gamma. I enjoy trying to work out a way a race could or even should unfold. I think Nathan got a rush of blood to the head when he decided to rush around the field with Dreams Are Free. Had I been the owner I would have been livid. The lead was never there for him. He had zero hope of getting to the parked position occupied by the All Stars. His only hope was to sit wide for the duration and still be good enough to beat them. He would have needed to have been a far better horse than every other runner in the field. I believe with sincerity that even Cardigan Bay couldn't have traveled the trip Dreams Are Free took and still paid a dividend. Very poor drive in a G1. The run of the race for me by panels was We Walk By Faith. Olivia Thornley drove Catch A Dream to win the G1 on NZ Cup Day in a Lord Module type performance. She knows better than most how good Catch A Dream is. I was astonished to see her rush around the field from well back and sit parked for most of the race giving the best horse in the race cover. You wouldn't blame a punter for questioning if this musical chairs move was purely to do Nat a huge favour. It 100% certainly made the difference with Catch A Dream winning and not winning. The fact We Walk By Faith only went down a nose was truly remarkable. If you watch what unfolded immediately after the race Nat was seen going out of her way communicating with Olivia in a manner that looked exactly like a big THANK YOU. Olivia should be very happy. If her position with the All Stars was not secure prior to last night, it certainly is now. It was a true G1 race and the best horse won but the one that most deserved to win ran a magnificent second. -
Check out highly respected nurse educator Dr John Campbell on YouTube. Was once a strong advocate for getting vaccinated against Covid. Now he has a mountain of evidence. Unsure of the situation here but in the UK victims and families of victims can't sue those that made billions from the vaccine as the Government gifted them immunity from any future prosecution related to the vaccine....aka a free pass. If you want compensation you'll need to sue the Government . All victims and their loved ones will be long gone before that unfolds.....by design Remind me again how many times each day did Mrs Ed instruct people to get vaccinated and ridicule and punish those that didn't? Her reward is to now be a multi millionaire Dame.....but she cares
