  1. If that's the case, surely they would cut it with a flail mower. Don't they?
  2. Punting revenue per race but not punting revenue per starter
  3. https://www.tabnz.org/tab-nz-trading-performance-update-september-2022 31 October 2022 TAB New Zealand (TAB NZ) provides the second monthly trading update for the 2022/2023 financial year, with the results and highlights for September 2022. The TAB operated through its online and retail channels throughout September. While the Omicron outbreak continued, the New Zealand Government dropped the COVID-19 Protection Framework/Traffic Light System from 13 September, easing all restrictions in retail and hospitality. Turnover was slightly down against budget in September, as was gross betting revenue (GBR) and gross betting margin (GBM), but overall, the performance showed signs of improvement compared to August. While the easing of mask restrictions had a positive impact on retail traffic, other factors - including the continuing soft economic conditions, abandoned race meetings, and another month of a drop in starters across all three racing codes - contributed to the above results. The Board will continue to factor in the current domestic and global financial climate, and the potential impact of any further ongoing trend of a drop in starter numbers as it assesses future distributions in the 2022-23 financial year. Wagering Performance Summary In September, the second month of the 2022/23 financial year, key performance results for TAB NZ were slightly down on the overall positive trends of the previous financial year. Turnover of $212.7m was 2.0% ($4.4m) below budget. GBR of $33.6m was down on budget by 3.4% ($1.2m) and GBM of 15.8% was 0.2 percentage points below budget. Racing Average NZ thoroughbred starters per race was 10.1, below the FY22 average of 10.6, while the peak turnover for a domestic meeting was $3.2m on 10 September at Hastings. Harness average starters per race was 9.8, slightly below the FY22 average of 10.2, while the peak meeting turnover of $1.5m was on 30 September at Addington. For greyhound racing, the average starters per race was 7.3, slightly below the FY22 average of 7.6, while the peak turnover for a domestic meeting was $441k on 22 September at Addington. Sport The top 3 sporting events by turnover for September were the three All Blacks tests against Australia and Argentina with a combined turnover of $3.4m. Tennis was the leading in-play sporting code accounting for 26% of in-play turnover while rugby union and rugby league were the top pre-match singles sporting codes accounting for 30% and 24% of pre-match turnover respectively. September Operational Performance Reported Profit for the month was $11.3m, which was $1.2m below Budget. Operating Expenses were $10.5m for the month, which was $0.1m above Budget. Year to Date Reported Profit was $21.7m, which was $2.5m below Budget Year to Date Operating Expenses were $21.0m, which was $0.5m above budget. September Distributions Racing Codes were paid $13.2m in distributions and other payments for September, versus $13.2m budgeted. This consisted of TAB NZ Betting Profit (listed as Fixed Distribution in the table below), offshore bookmaker commission fees, which are based on actual turnover (termed Betting Information Use Charges (BIUC) in the table below), and Betting Duty/Levy repeal. 4. 14 last year and the year before so that is very light.
  5. Bizarre that they would run an R82 stayers in direct competition to the cup and that is essentially an R75 anyway. Surely should have been a lead up race. Cup certain to be downgraded with that field.
  6. She was grilled by the stipes in the presence of the riding mentor. I think that's a reasonable response by offcials, similar to what would be likely over there. SOPHIA’S MAGIC (T Mitchell) - Began awkwardly. Improved onto heels near the 100 metres then was unable to obtain clear running for the remainder of the race. When questioned regarding her riding tactics apprentice T Mitchell in the presence of riding mentor N Harris, advised that she had been instructed to ride her mount quietly in the early stages as the mare had previously tended to over-race during the middle stages after being asked to improve in the early stages. After settling towards the rear of the field she had elected to ease her mount as she had initially been caught three wide. Further advising that rounding the final bend she had been reluctant to improve into a run inside of HOT PINX as that runner appeared to be checking off heels and shifting inwards near the 450 metres. Upon viewing films T Mitchell conceded that in hindsight she may have erred in her judgement. Stewards advised T Mitchell that she would be expected to ride in a manner that does not leave herself open to query in the future.
  7. Generally 5-7000 volts
  8. Most of them appear to be there. Others probably unlikely starters. There is a fine for late rider declarations.
  9. It's gone to a good cause in the end but that is insane. I know and have worked with a number of kids and families who have been substantially helped by Starship and it has been my primary choice for charitable donations the last 5 or 6 years. That has come to a halt as of this morning. So, a five figure annual sum they will no longer get. I hate to do it but if they start screening donors for involvement in gambling and racing, they probably won't want it anyway.
  10. If the alleged incidents are true, then that should have been dealt with by the RIB (since the parties involved were licence-holders) and/or the police. As to the resolution, I expect RACE will simply tell the TA that this is a matter between RACE and Mr. Vile and that they have no interest in engaging with the TA about it.
  11. I think they are talking about the Gambling Act, not the Racing Act.
  12. Overall Decision 182. Having carefully considered the application in some detail, and having considered the submissions, the officer reports, the evidence and all other relevant matters, the application be granted pursuant to ss 104, 104B, 104D and 108 of the Resource Management Act 1991 subject to the conditions attached in Appendix A. So it appears that the CJC have successfully demolished both the Grand National Stand and the Grand National carnival in the course of the year.

  14. I agree. Haven't seen a roller on a track in decades. Would be madness to run heavy equipment unnecessarily let alone a roller as well on a a track that probably already has compaction problems.
  15. Yes. Starting point 1 month for careless riding causing a fall. Pretty consistent with Oz and elsewhere. One might argue that the Opie incident was verging on reckless but that's not what he was charged with.
  16. And again! Ashburton RC | Saturday 15 October Friday Morning Weather: Fine | Light Frost Track: Soft 5 Moisture Meter: n/s Rail: True Rainfall: Nil Irrigation: Irrigated last night Weather and Track Updated at 7.30am Friday 14 October
  17. Oh no! They irrigated again last night? WTF? It's not like the forecast is for 30 degrees and a howling nor'wester. Thursday Afternoon Weather: Fine | Easterly Wind Track: Soft 5 Moisture Meter: n/s Rail: True Rainfall: Nil Irrigation: Irrigated last night Weather and Track Updated at 4pm Thursday 13 October
  18. Rescheduled for Monday.
  19. OK. I stand corrected. That has changed but not been updated in the venue guidelines. Race Day Track Preparation Process – Mandatory Requirements Clubs should aim to produce a GOOD3 rating (track with good grass coverage and cushion) for the majority of the race meeting. This may result in a track reading in the Dead range being declared on race morning.
  20. That's interesting. I thought the track preparation guidelines said they should aim for a Good 3 on race morning?
  21. You are not the first to raise that question. Hopefully they have now found the tap and turned the bloody thing off.
  22. Maybe, but this sort of stuff just further perpetrates that nonsense. I'm not going to pick it apart. Can't be bothered reading it again but this comment struck me. Bullet point four also describes ‘sport’ as a stakeholder, which is entirely incorrect. Sport supplies the TAB with a product on which to bet, for which they receive a fair fee and fair commission on the profit derived. Sport is simply a supplier. Now, I can't say I've ever heard of a business that doesn't consider their suppliers as key stakeholders. As a supplier, if I thought my customers didn't consider me a key stakeholder in their business, I'd be looking for someone else to supply to. NZSport could do that too. It's like Brian writes this stuff then has a mini-brain explosion every now and then. Can't see how that could make sense to anyone. From Investopedia: What Is a Stakeholder? A stakeholder is a party that has an interest in a company and can either affect or be affected by the business. The primary stakeholders in a typical corporation are its investors, employees, customers, and suppliers.
  23. I wasn't going to read this, let alone bother commenting. These pieces just seem to be a waste of time. There's not a single piece of information in there that I haven't known for days or weeks at least. So what purpose does it serve? The figures all say that the TAB has continuing falling revenue and increasing OPEX. It's only a matter of time before they have to reduce the stakes distribution funding so they don't end up back cap in hand to the taxpayer and government. If they do, I'm pretty sure I know what the answer will be. Sometimes I think BdeL operates in a different era and probably a different planet. The only suggestion is that the codes reclaim their ownership of the TAB citing events from the 50s. That really would be mad even if it had a chance of success which it doesn't. Why would the codes want it? Why would anyone want it? It's a steadily failing business and the codes least of all have the financial resources or skills to run it for however much longer it may last.

  25. Yes. Reefton was always an important lead up venue for SI trainers pointed to Trentham so it makes sense.
