  1. OK. That's a very different approach to mine as a punter. I have no interest in assessing which horse will be most likely to win an event, even though I have that assessment. On the basis that every horse has a chance of doing so, even if that is less than 1%, I'm trying to find horses which have a chance significantly better than the bookies assessment. I have little interest in figuring out the horse most likely to win.
  2. I don't care how you derive them - plenty of successful ways - but a punter has to have them to price markets otherwise how do you assess whether an available price is worth taking? Just need to have ratings that are more accurate than the bookie's.
  3. Funny. He was 93. Rex COCHRANE Obituary Passed away peacefully on November 4, 2023, aged 93 years young. Loved husband of the late Betty. Respected and loved father, father-in-law and friend of Judith and Andrew, and Robyn and Bevan. Treasured grandfather 'Rex' of the late Callan, Anna, and the late Ashley; Rebecca and Chris, and Monique and Riki. Special great-grandfather of Kahu, Stella, and wee Milla. Much loved brother and uncle. Thanks for the care shown to Rex at the Ashburton Hospital, and Rosebank Lifecare. Messages to the Cochrane family, 96 Ashburton Staveley Road, RD1, Ashburton 7771. 4. He could have been at the PWMC and placed the bet there on his phone couldn't he?
  5. Surprisingly, no sign of her in the top 120 of the recently released Longines' ratings through November 5. Though "THINK ABOUT IT (AUS) [121] joins the rankings after his half-length victory over I WISH I WIN (NZ) [121] in the Tab Everest in Australia. https://www.ifhaonline.org/resources/WTRRankings/LWBRR_PressRelease.asp?pid=137 https://www.ifhaonline.org/resources/WTRRankings/LWBRR.asp?batch=115
  6. Wholly pasta. What the hell do I do with all this brylcream? On a more serious note, I think the race and the run of In Secret which exceeded my expectations, certainly franks the Everest form.
  7. Just a different way of doing things I guess. I've started 100s of horses but would not put a bit in their mouth before they've learned to start stop and steer via visual, voice and bodyweight signals. Don't use the bit to teach them that.
  8. FOB for Sundays and weekdays aren't usually available till 4pm the day before are they?
  9. Well she's tightened a bit but I wouldn't be taking those prices when you can still get $2 e.g. Ladbrokes.
  10. Maybe but she has won a couple of Group races at 1400, so I'm not sure that would bother her.
  11. Absolutely. Not because I'm an 'Imperatriz fan' though, but because the bookies think she's a less than 50% chance and I think she's a 60+% chance.
  12. Wasn't backable for me at 1.70 at the time.
  13. Or do you mean for Imperatriz?
  14. I gave you that. 4.50
  15. 2.10 BetM 2.05 Laddies
  16. My pricing and what I would back or lay them at are 2 different things and we won't know how good or bad that was until after the race. Just that by my pricing Imperatriz is now backable at $2.
  17. What do you think about that price for In Secret? 4.80 in Oz.
  18. "Robert investigated further before realising that it was no mistake, with a green tick next to his $5 first four easybets and NZ$106,000 in winnings".
  19. 4 rated over 90. 1 over 100.
  20. Can't they use common sense and reverse/reinstate that?
  21. It's all very confusing. Important pre-cup week trial meeting evaporated as well. Could surely have been shifted to Rangiora say?
  22. If the above rainfall measure is correct, it certainly seems very odd that it was enough to create surface flooding on that track and also flood all the facilities.
  23. No. Most horses accept the bit quickly and learn how it directs them.
  24. Why carry it if you are not going to use it? Just get rid of the bloody things. You make my case by your last comment. More from Monty on this and I confess he has been a huge influence on my life and horsemanship but he has a way of putting these things in a nutshell. “Violence is never the answer.” Roberts took his message of violence-free horse training to the world stage in 1996 encouraged by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Already Roberts had been the leading Thoroughbred consignor at Hollywood Park Race Track for 13 years. He says that his horses respond to his non-violent approach. “A whip has no place in horsemanship at all,” argues Roberts. “It’s medieval for horses.” He also points out that a horse that wants to win, that has that competitive spirit and natural “will to win” is always going to be a far better racing prospect than the one that has to be beaten for half of the race. In 2006 Edgar Prado never touched Barbaro with his whip and never asked him to do anything more than was necessary. Prado said, “If he’s running real hard, why should he be punished? I’m a horse lover more than anything else.” A student of Roberts’s concepts, Hong Kong’s leading rider and 7-time winner of the Jockeys Championship Trophy, Douglas Whyte, said “I still believe I can get more out of a horse by encouraging them rather than punishing them. My job is to win the horse’s confidence and to get them to run to their best for me.”
