To summarise, the results of this study show that jockeys in more advanced placings at the 400 and 200 m positions before the post in races whip their horses more frequently. To gain the advantageous placings at 400 m positions, no horses were whipped while between the 400 and 200 m positions only half were whipped. On average, they achieved highest speeds when there was no whip use, and the increased whip use was most frequent in fatigued horses. That increased whip use was not associated with significant maintenance of velocity as a predictor of superior race placing at the finish of the race. Further studies with on-board sensors of gait characteristics are required to study responses to whipping in individual horses. The authors conclude that, under an ethical framework that considers costs paid by horses against benefits accrued by humans [11], these data make whipping tired horses in the name of sport very difficult to justify. However, it is worth noting that other ethical frameworks would not condone the practice even if it did, contrary to the findings of this study, cause horses to run faster.

That's an interesting one under NZ law too. ProhibitedAdvertising overseas gambling is prohibited under section 16 of the Gambling Act 2003. An overseas gambling advertisement is any communication that publicises or promotes gambling, or a gambling operator, when that gambling, or operator, is outside New Zealand Does the TAB breach this when promoting gambling on overseas events?

Yes, that would delight me. Always carry a stick when starting horses but only ever use it for a tap on the shoulder to regain attention. Mostly it's just tucked in my boot. Not sure how they'd police that but be great if they could.

Except imo the quality of racing will only improve with this sort of initiative along with the professionalism of riders if the whip use is curtailed in this fashion and painful bullying of horses is removed from the skill arsenal of successful jockeys.

Total waste of industry funds. If they wanted to make the race open to all comers with NZB funding a bonus for sales graduates then fine. That would also allow it to achieve the Group status it would otherwise deserve. Simple really.

You simply don't get it do you? The primary object of the Westland club is to conduct race meetings at their home course in Hokitika. The right to do so was removed by the RB and NZTR. The purpose and intent of their constitution is quite clear. In the event of dissolution, subject to legislative requirements, "The Club will seek NZTR approval to dispose of surplus assets for the benefit of residents of Westland". All they have done is pre-empted the NZTR approval of that by acting as and when they did. There never was an object or intent to provide for the "betterment of West Coast racing" though they appear to be doing that anyway by supporting this petition and the loan to Kumara, for example.

Why? They are a viable racing club with money in the bank, loaned money to Kumara last season and are supporting the idea of a 4th day in the circuit. They don't need land for that do they? Nor any more money for that matter.
