Dont think Harness Racing is known as the sport of Kings? Thoroughbred racing more so.
-
Correct but you are well behind the eightball if you are spending $30k for a service and extras then training costs, hiding to nothing unless you have a top bred one.

What I have learnt over the past few years is just how gullible people are!! Someone says something and it must be true! we have had over 5 years of absolute BS from Ardern and now Chippie and yet people believe what they say! No problem with Woodlands coming out and saying they had a great sale if they were happy with the result! We need Woodlands, Alabar etc. providing stallions and fosks so that racing can continue. At the end of the day it is their livelihood and hopefully purchasers will bag a bargain when they aren’t paying $2k for a weanling when the service fee is several times more than that alone. any other business and they would be broke pretty quickly however they can survive by charging huge service fees to the breeders who want to pay these fees! What I do know is that these breeders are dwindling and are future breeders in a position to want to pay these costs when the returns are so poor??

At my stage of life be far too much to handle!

Myers and Davy Jones markup is massive so they wont be selling stock at a loss and to be fair there is a big difference between a standardbred that is going to cost somewhere in excess of 50k minimum with breeding and racing for a season or two, and a bra at Myers! Anyway what Woodlands and Alabar do with their business doesnt affect me personally, a d hopefully they continue to do what they do, but personally believe that behind closed doors they will be evaluating why they are breeding horses that are not going to at least cover costs!

Another one to get a holiday for driving to lose the race
Brodie replied to Nowornever's topic in Trotting Chat
Amateur races are exactly what they are, races for Amateurs! Time and time again there are issues and if you bet into them, you should be prepared to take the bad with the bad! classie Linc shouldve won that race by many lengths, but I thought that it wouldnt win if she went back from the gate, as I know how The driver often drives. She shouldve gone out and led as it has shown that it can lead! Yes it was an incompetent drive but I now believe that there is no intent or point in these amateurs trying not to win! They earn no money from the drives obviously a d do kt for the fun of it and therefore should not be fined! A suspension and huge telling off should be enough and get these AMATEUR RACES run solely as a NON-TOTE race! -
Na, I am not a boring Accountant, however I was very good in accounting when at High School lol. Woodlands have stated that the sale was a success for them and if that is their spiel for the industry rather than telling the truth, fair enough. Yes they are clearly successful breeders as their record shows, however the sale of half of their weanlings were at a financial loss so they have a very low level of what success is!!
-
Gamma, what i am hearing is that people have different interpretation of SUCCESS! So if I had a few punts and I lost money on them for the day, but it wasnt as big a loss as the week before, you are clearly saying that it was a successful day on the punt????? The sale as a Commercial venture for Woodlands to most business people would be that it was far from successful! Most accountants would say it was very unsucceSsful and not to breed and sell most of the weanlings at the sale again! If I was a shop, it was not be in my best interests whatsoever to be selling 50% of my stock for a loss which is clearly what Woodlands has done!!! If this is what a business does, the. They would ve out of vusiness in the first year without doubt! If I was a house builder and I was selling the builds for under cost what would happen???? Bankruptcy!!!

Service fees in NZ for stallions whether it be standardbred or thoroughbred are generally ridiculous for what it is! A bit of semen! If Bettors Delight, Captain Treacherous etc. were cheaper there would be more mares bred from and therefore more foals on the ground! It just makes very little sense financially to breed horses as it is just a lottery as to what you get. Far easier to buy a horse that shows ability so not such a gamble.
-
Chief, not too sure that selling weanlings for less than half of the stallions Service Fee is doing a lot for the industry at all! When you need to quit a weanling for $2k for the sake of promoting a stallion, I personally believe it is actually detrimental for both harness racing and the breeding industry. When breeders realise that progeny are being sold off for less than a stallions service fee, they are going to steer clear of that stallion surely? Woodlands stand many stallions in NZ and good on them for trying to get foals on the ground, but to state that the sale was successful is quite delusional!

What was the horse or race etc that got you started?
Brodie replied to Walt's topic in Trotting Chat
Yep same guy, but we best not comment Walt, as it may not be politically correct 😂 Does make for interesting listening though! -
Gammalite, of course you are correct in that you have to be pretty fortunate if your horses can cover costs from racing! Yes it is good that Woodlands have provided some cheap weanlings to buyers so they can see if they are any good! The point I was trying to make is how on earth is selling 2/5 of your horses for $4k or less a great success????? Woodlands would produce well bred stock and yet there was so little interest from buyers for half of them? The average price was not a true reflection of how they sold !

Yep, enthusiasm in spades! 3 horse trial and its like the NZ Cup! -
Spatchcock, You clearly have ties to Woodlands . So what you are saying is that Woodlands are prepared to breed and sell horses knowing that they are going to lose money on them? Maybe a far better idea would be for them to drop the Service Fees on their stallions so that there could be more foals on the ground? Breeding horses to sell nowadays is a hell of a risk I appreciate and if they are prepared to breed them to lose money, it is telling us something about the state of the industry currently! To sell horses for $2,500, basically a months training costs, seems like there is a major problem here?? Spatchcock, would you consider it to be a successful sale for Woodlands when close to half of their horses are sold for $4k or less???
-
Bruce negus obviously thought they were good value as he purchased 7 weanlings for,an outlay of 22,500 so averaged not much over $3k per horse! Woodlands need to be more selective in the future as to what they breed for this sale, surely
-
They had 19 or 20 weanlings that sold for $4k or less and they say it was a great success?? How on earth can selling a weanling for 3k be successful??????? Sales costs, rearing costs etc and you are down the gurgler big time! Alabar had 13 sell for $4k or less! How can that be a successful sale, seriously?

The fellah that does the trials in Southland models himself on Dave Clarkson! -
Just had a look st the sales results for Woodlands Stud, the biggest vendor,I believe? Looking at the sales figures, you would have to question why they bother surely? There were 48 sold and of those 29 sold for less than $10k! The majority of those were 3 or 4k! Yes some did sell for up to $50k but there were only a few that actually wouldve returned a profit. Yes I appreciate that they probably stand the sire there so buggerall cost but there are all the other expenses in the rearing of them and sales costs etc. On a commercial basis there own breeding to sell weanlings was generally a total flop!!

Appreciate Chief allowing us to discuss todays issues that we have in NZ on this site! Great discussing harness racing topics as well but seriously, if Liebour get in again with the Jealous party and the Racist Party, there aint going to be any harness racing! ! -

With the mortgage interest dropping so low to not much over 2%, there was a great opportunity to purchase property, whether it be a first home or otherwise These low interest rates was due to ill thought out policy from a so called government that is so far out if its depth it is not funny. Hipkins isjust hopeless, look at the mess education is in and he was the minister of education. He is too soft and no skills like all of the other lefties! If you think that Labour is going to help first home buyers purchase property you are seriously deluded, as they are making it even harder for them. Yes there is still a reasonable % buying but that is because the sales no.s are down. Yes Luxon is not that great as a leader but geez he at least has some commonsense and business acumen like many in National. Labour has NONE. -
Harness punters have had severe restrictions placed on them since not long after fixed odds came in. They should be advertising that they only welcome punting on harness racing from punters that are not interested in winning and only do it for the fun? Seriously, the NZ TAB have performed very poorly over a long period of time and that is why Entain has been able to buy into it for a bargain price. I can see it ending very badly for racing in this country, however you would expect that as everything that Labour has touched has been disastrous! McAnulty wont be too worried, he will be well gone!

Galah, according to the clowns in power at the moment, the poor are not getting poorer, as they reckon child poverty has dropped, but we all know that is selective use of figures. The idiotic policies that Liebour have brought in has increased those in need of State Houses by approx. 500% since they have been in control. The inflation of everything including building products has been caused by Labour Nd their spending and crazy policy. Landlording at the moment just does not make sense financially and there will be many try and bail out when they realise how much extra tax they need to pay and they will not be wanting to substantially subsidise their tenants housing!! National Act will bet in in October as things are going to be very dire financially for so many due to Govt. -
Hadnt really heard if the NZ TAB restricting people on Sports Betting! Maybe it is common?

As Chief says there is a capital gains tax by stealth, it is the Brightline Test that National started at 2 years and the Commie Party now has it at 10 years. Most investors are not buying at the moment as it is not viable to buy and rent out as they are all negatively geared and then the 10 year brightline is in play. Far more money now in buying right, improving and flipping as you might as well pay the tax now than in 9 years time. A Capital Gains tax is just an ENVY TAX, and needs to be applied to owner Occupied houses as well as businesses, etc. or it is totally unfair. All a Capital Gains Tax does is puts up the price of houses!!!!!! When has a tax ever dropped the price of anything???? NEVER!!!! What I will guarantee though is that the LABOUR policies that they have adopted to kill landlords will backfire majorly and tenants rents are going to be greatly increased. They need to go up by 25 to 30% to make it semi viable at the moment depending on your amount of debt. Brodie is on the money! -

The meddling in the housing market by these incompetents, is having dire consequences for so many. People who have saved for years to buy a home to better themselves have now lost everything they have saved, due to drop in values of their homes in many areas in New Zealand. This is due to Labour incompetence!!! In the mean time the people who do nothing of benefit to NZ still have their housing provided by and paid for by the NZ taxpayer. I can tell you now that people who provide rentals to tenant’s deserve to be rewarded as it is not as easy as you might think! Labour meddling has made it harder for anyone to borrow money for anything but then they dont give a rats, as there is not one successful person financially in that Labour caucus!!
