Things will be interesting if some of the Aussies or classie brigade want to hold the lead or get driven aggressively against all star horses, they are used to most kiwi drivers handing up easily and letting them dictate feature races with the number of horses they have in them.....that's what I like about Aussie drivers generally, they value getting the front.

Aussies have a great record of turning around average pacers and trotters from NZ, the form from Australia was certainly franked by tough monarch and mclovin quinella on cup day.

A pity tornado valley didn't make the trip, as far as I'm aware, he never came up to race in Auckland in his 50 or so NZ starts, so I imagine you're right about not him liking going right handed. I backed mclovin in the Dominion handicap after his great 2nd to tough monarch on NZ cup day and was counting my money after he was trailing marcoola on a hot speed, but didn't seem to stay the 2 miles the 2700m should suit him better in the idom final!

NZ thoroubred racing is very poor now, anything decent seems to be sold to Singapore or Hong Kong. Pretty demoralizing when you see a 15 horse field racing here for less than a picnic meeting in Australia!

Nice one gammalite, I was also there, some fantastic horses back then, I also remember watching the middle night of ID's and it had been bucketing down and the mobile couldn't function all races had to be stand start, ao marama caused a huge upset in one of the heats.
