Champions day crowd.

With all the hype over Champions day will the crowd back up all the hype, surely they can match Addingtons 15000 or so for Cup Day.

Our old friend here TAB Forever keeps lavishing praise about how wonderful Auckland is here's the chance  for Aucklanders to put into perspective where horse racing fits into the Auckland psychology.

For a place that size its crowds mostly are poor, but as many there are migrants most likely just not interested unlike the rest of NZ.

We are all immigrants aren't we? Or, descendants of them. What do you mean?

True but many of our recent arrivals from India and the likes would mostly be uninterested in many of some kuwi traditions, there is a reason why many are into Cricket but not Rugby, question still remains are they into horse racing ?

Well what's so good about Auckland,, would there be any reason why they couldn't match Addington on Cup Day especially as it's a weekend day. As doomed points out it's well promoted raceday so this is the litmus test.

Or is it simply with the population demographic changing there that many of the traditions still alive and kicking in rural New Zealand are slowly fading into oblivion in the city of sails. And don't keep harping on about Auckland being the power base, rural NZ is, always will be.

I'm sure those that go along will have a great time, and see some of the best horses going . The horses look so fabulous in the parade ring / birdcage especially. you can see them up close and enjoy the atmosphere.

The tele coverage is excellent for these events this century as well though. So a lot of people enjoy their own food and drinks in their favourite chair/couch , while enjoying the amazing action. Just the way it is these days. On-course attendances are only a small part of the viewing audience. certainly not the be-all/end-all of it.

Great win today by NZ in the cricket. but it won't mean bigger attendances at the cricket. Just a sign of the times , and the state of the economy has a lot to do with it as well. Household budgets running fairly tight with Bigger mortgages and rents these days , than we encountered in the days of large on-course attendances at the races.

The owners (slot holders) put up a lot of money themselves these days , to put against each other . this is a good way to go now and into the future,  and has been quite successful in the harness world past 4 years, as the horses can race for BIG stakemoney , which means not only do we get the Best horses assembled and therefore the Best racing , but some horses earn a good bit of earnings as well , without breaking the industry funds annual budget.

I was actually hoping Aussie win the Cricket to send India packing, they have too much clout now, the fact that the Champions trophy is being played in our traditional time slot for home matches to accommodate the IPL in April  is just one example, playing the final of a tournament in Pakistan in another country is just a rort, later this month we have Pakistan again here for 5 t20s and some one dayers which kind of lead into nothing, would have been nice to have test matches instead but maybe a wee bit earlier.

As for the races this is the litmus test for Auckland racing, yes a good day of racing but will the public turnup, Addington Cup Day has been a tradition, Auckland have shifted races around all over the place for sometime now and actually moved some of their traditional races off traditional dates, up till now with mixed success, sometimes tradition stands for a lot, don't matter if it's Riverton at Easter, Kumara at new year or whatever, the fact it's the same formula year after year mean it's working fine.

Like me, they will probably be far more interested in Sunday's Champions' final against the Black Caps than the NZBKiwi.

You watch 3 news?

Old habits. I have never been able to stand 1. I know 3 is basically a Stuff propaganda channel these days, but I just glance at it and take everything with a grain of salt. They have often had a bit of racing coverage over the years, but the current coverage does indicate they are being paid to mention the "big day" on Sat. I don't know if you are seeing similar on 1.
