Te Akau Nick is your boy Chief.   won the Metropoliton not long after GAI first licensed.

Did a  Te Akau syndicate in NZ own it ?

Here's one for you old Chap in return ( or anyone can answer of course )

TE AKau Nick then ran 2nd in the Melbourne Cup at 160-1 . Who Beat him ?

Had to be DE or you wouldn't have asked!

No I asked because it was a piece of trivia I didn't know until today.  Obviously you didn't know the answer until today.

Shortly after the Waterhouse bookmaker enterprise was starting to rejuvenate after the Fine Cotton and other scandals the Waikato Racing club held a fixed odds promotion inviting the Waterhouses to field oncourse. Poor old Robbie got hit by the President (Te Akau Dave Ellis) which resulted in a loss for the bookmakers.

Incidently many years ago I was queing up at Paeroa to have a bet. The guy in front of me seemed quite confident placing $50 win on a horse called Magnum. I followed suit and I think it paid about $12. In retrospect I am convinced it was Dave Ellis backing his first owned winner.

Not correct asThe answer is a horse.

Love Bobby Vance though. used to play Sunday cricket at the old Takanini training track on Sundays. Before the ARC sold that land off for housing a while back. Galloping blokes v Trotting blokes each week.  Batter always had to put his beer directly behind the stumps when facing the bowling , so that he would protect his wicket better and not get his beer knocked over with the stumps if bowled out lol. 😆

Com'on Chief . where's your answer ? Who beat Te Akau Nick into 2nd place in the Melbourne Cup ?

I'll give ya a clue . in case you're struggling.

The winner of that Cup single-handedly started the Massive Decline in Breeding and racing Stayers in Aus (and NZ) and has greatly imprinted that legacy on thoroughbreds racing ever since.

I counted 7 NZ horses in the field, some great ones

wow . that Sir David Ellis galloper went a great race and looked the winner at the 400 in that video. Bobby Vance giving a huge sight with Te Akau Nick.   Dermot Weld the Irishman spoiling the party late on unfortunately 🙄

Grand NZ Mares went on to win the Melbourne Cup afterwards I spose , like EMPIRE ROSE and ETHEREAL , but the damage was done in that race you just posted , and Northern Hemisphere trainers have been running in the Cup , and their horses (imported stayers)  dominating in all the staying races we have these days ever since.  not a great thing for our local breeders.

While Vintage Crop was the first NH trained winner of the MC, the avalanche of winners did not come until 2011 with Dunaden, and thereafter 10 of the next 15 MC's were won by European trained horses.  In fact through till 2011 there were 6 NZ bred horses and 4 Aus, only Jeune from Europe and add in the 2 from USA and Delta Blues from Japan

While Makybe Diva was UK bred you would still class her as an Aus horse as she was shipped to Aus as an unraced 2 year old

Yes but plenty were trying though. Godolphin for example sent their trainers and staff for 20 years before finally cracking it with Cross Counter  . who 's that you say ?  I don't know either . just some low weighted thing of theirs .

The thing is the many overseas runners were 'Taking the Spots' that NZ or Aus based /bred/owned gallopers would of otherwise had. That is the race finished as the iconic NZ/Aus institution , and is now a World Race . and a bit boring too these days.  well was exciting when the local QLDer 'Vow and Declare' 🏆💰 won I spose , and Chiefy was a bit excited when QLD trained KNIGHT's CHoice 🏆💪 won even more recently .  so there's still hope yet for the locals (if they can get a run lol) 😎

it's Not on the radar of NZ and Aus trainers the way it once was though.

hahaha you should of seen Gammalite race at times then 😆 . Driver couldn't drive a stick into mud , but he is the Gamest horse I've ever seen . with a few whacks ( given a lap out sometimes 😂) and he just kept on going like a nascar lol . probably won 80 from 180 starts or something close to that.
