Cambridge &Addington - Friday night???

Does anyone know why there is no harness meeting in NZ on Thursday night?

Why on earth are they running Cambridge and Addington both on Friday night?

Surely it is financial suicide for one or both clubs competing for the same dollar?

Bring back Saturday night racing at Addington to get new people back on course!

Good meals, reasonable drink prices and 25 minute spacing between racing and educate the newbies.

Spectators is packed as it is and the floor above is one big space that is closed off sometimes so where would they go?

I think they have realised (and planned for) the days of a sizeable crowd at a normal meeting are gone.

They leave  all the lounges open.

The first floor they have closed off should never really be closed off on race night unless it is the middle of winter.

When it is closed by curtains most of the time there is nothing in there and all it does is sends regulars away home early, as they can not be bothered with Spectators being full.

Why is it that the metropolitan tracks in Oz race on a Saturday night?

Because  they know it is going to get the biggest crowd in.

It probably won’t happen again here in Nz because I don’t believe the powers that be really care.

Competing against Rugby?

Yawn!!

But look at the rugby crowds, worse than the racing ones! Go back to 3pm rugby games on a Saturday and then onto the trots, but everything done for the greedy rugby union selling the t.v rights, they don't give a toss if the punters don't turn up to games so long as they watch on sky. I used to love going to sat night trots at Alex park as a kid, big crowds and my sister and I knew we'd get a burger and chips from the burger van on course plus $10 from the old man to punt with for the night!

There is also the numbers game. Melbourne , Sydney, Brisbane have millions of people, Perth nearly two million.

Lots of discretionary income to spread around.

And dont forget they have to compete against AFL, League etc so its no easier.

With so many other forms of entertainment here ,they are pushing it uphill with such a small population base.

Why would a non-racing person go to Addington these days more than once a year?

Ask yourself.

What's happened in the last 30 years to turn people off going to the trots? I reckon wall to wall racing on the t.v has wrecked the spectacle of going to the track, now it's just satellite tracks like menangle miles from the Sydney population with hardly any crowd, but just made for the t.v.  ..I can see in the next 30 years one  track in the north island and one in the south island, with gallops, trots and greyhounds all racing from the same venue....and n.z cup run over 1609m

Addington provides the best racing in NZ, and it is clearly our best track and has pretty good facilities.

If we don’t get new people on track, then they won’t become enthusiastic and they won’t be betting!!!!!

Does Thursday or Friday night give young working people the best opportunity to attend on course?

Of course it doesn’t, as they have work the next day on a Thursday night and on a Friday they finish work and pretty much would be pretty rushed to get to the races!

Saturday nights would be far easier to attend and bring their mates or family with them and laid back.

I believe that a major reason that there are no Saturday meetings in NZ is because the hierarchy have become accustomed to the Friday nights and don’t want to work their Saturday nights.

Is it worth another trial to see whether it is beneficial for harness racing?

I say yes but then I haven’t got as much financial interest in it as may others!

Also the early 5.15pm start at Addington doesn't help most people would miss the first 2 or three races if they work a normal job.... Saturday you have all day to get stuff done, then go out to the track and a sleep in on Sunday.

Worth a try Brodie especially over summer when there’s no rugby on tv. Also agree it seems silly to have no meeting on Thursday but two on Friday.

Think your on the money with this one.

My good friend Brodie, I think you are on the money with your thoughts. Addington should try a few Saturday nights because as you say if promoted properly with good tucker, cheap drinks and perhaps music, it could be popular.

I think the reason why they have trots on Friday night is because they probably get more turnover through the TAB that way? Friday nights many have a few after work and bet at the pub while there. Down at the local dive, The Waterfront, in Blenheim, this happens. The more Speights that goes down the tube the longer the queue at the TAB and boy do they back some clangers. Nags astute punters like you and I would not touch mate. The bosses at the TAB know that a few ales makes most men think they are super punters like you mate.
