Read all reports on hrnz  that connections very happy with this horse.   The horse then runs terrible. clearly not 100%.   Turns out the horse was pre race checked and passed fit to start despite having bad hives.  Punters robbed again

One  would have to have been super keen to punt on it tonight. It is a different horse during this series compared to the Dominion. Even if it is 'fit' to start it can't be anywhere near 100%.

The trainer advised the stewards just after lunchtime today that the horse was displaying symptoms of hives, but "appeared to be unaffected". Take whatever you want out of that.

Vet checked and cleared pre-race, but clearly the horse isn't 100%. Happy is right.

Hopefully he can bounce back next week.

What I take from that is the trainer lined his horse up so as to get enough points to make the final.  And that this was sanctioned by a vet who would have us believe hives would not effect its performance.

There is no integrity there at all.

Didn't have hives.    He will be ok in a couple of days.     It's easy to treat a horse but when so close to a race you have to look at withholding periods of any medicines/remedies.     Stipes okayed the horse to start so can't see a problem.     If it had not been passed by vets well that another situation - and scopes and the like would have been ordered by the stipes even if they didn't know whats wrong.    But in this case obviously the trainer and vets agreed the problem was not serious.

Apart from Habibi Inta’s dominion win,  you would have to say the Paul Nairn polish on the trotters has pretty much worn off, he doesn’t appear to have much going around at present and hasn’t for a few seasons now.

That's a bit rough with lotofmuscle winning the hambletonion and the NZ derby last season. Plus Gil Favor running 4th or so in both of them. His team may not be as strong as seasons ago, but they certainly still have that polish

So what is wrong?

Guerin said it was hives.

May have been misreported by some, but initially the trainer reported it as displaying symptoms like hives.

Kind of like when one may have flu-like symptoms but without actually having the flu.

You talk about not being able to treat the horse because of withholding times then in the next statement say the problem was not serious.

Clearly it effected his race performance .

You can' get away from the fact they knew that before they started.  Would Nairn have started the horse if it did not require the points for the final.

Its a very poor example to set.

I suppose you could say the problem was superficial.    Perhaps the effects were "annoying" like (say) if you had a pimple on the bum it wouldn't stop you walking but in yourself you just didn't feel 100%.     Paul obviously did his best without resorting to "chemicals" and as the vet gave it the clearance what more could he do?
