Would be interesting to see where some have gone? I know a few have passed away, some retired,  but what has happened to the others?
Kevin Payne, sacked by racing board, what is he up to?
Alby Gain?

I was having a buffet breakfast at  Alexandra park a few years ago and saw alby, the whale and a few others doing likewise. I think alby had some connection to hees garden Chinese restaurant some time back but not sure if he does now.

I used to really like Ian chambers calling around Nelson/Blenheim  his calls were great

really good piece from the sun in 2012 about Eric Percy a carpet layer by trade..  I didn't realize he went back to calling the trials at waterlea in 2009 after his wife died, in the 2012 piece he was 72 so he'd be close to 80 now. he also talked about a race call he did where a wasp got in the box and stung him 4 times while commentating on a race......

Dave McDonald replaced a guy Haywood ( George ) I  stand corrected on his first name , he replaced  Bill Cherry who retired to Queenstown . Davy was in training to be or was a full time fireman who called at  workout's / trials . Mr Haywood was only into the full time job , from memory only a month and died suddenly and that is how  the icon of the south got started in the commentators box . The timing of this was the mid to late 70's . When Davy celebrated his 40 years as a commentator Ian Chambers , kevin Payne and Reon Murtha of yesteryear where in attendance to celebrate the day . I remember not that long ago Davy got Donna Beck the oncourse presenter to call the 1st of the day ,a 6 horse aprox  field , ground breaking at the time , I bet the overpaid bosses dished out the warning notices that day .

there was nothing in the article about him being author, but I see there is a Eric Percy that has written books from Marlborough so he may well have done that after 2012. Eric percy also called  18 international rugby matches for radio....... these commentators from days gone by are so much more interesting than the ones now...apart from probably dave Mac and Tony Lee.

1971 british lions played a combined nelson / marlborough side in blenhiem

i think Reon Murtha did a bit of rugby calling too.3ZB did a lot of local rugby those days, same as the days when Ian Galloway, excuse the spelling if incorrect, he always did the main match on club day from Carisbrook.
