AND, They are avoiding the answer to my question........who's funding Karaka Millions? after all, the industry has been propping this initiative up for years.  Its NZB's show, so why is the industry subsidising a closed race series that 99% of stakeholders can't get a crack at.  This is where the rubber hits the road....time to come clean NZTR.  I think every other owner would back me here.

Back to stakes....they look pretty good considering the free starts are still in place ( so far...,)   But is this model likely to be sustainable?

Not going by what Treasury's due diligence reported at the time of the budget bailout package.

Additional recommendations

1 note that this initiative will address the identified Racing Industry Transition Agency
(RITA) funding requirements through to 31 July 2020;

2 note that the support package for RITA is based on the assumption that its lender, ASB Bank
Limited (ASB), will formally agree to continue its current debt support for RITA;

4 note that the Department of Internal Affairs will report to the Minister of Finance and
Minister for Racing to seek approval of any conditions associated with the grant to RITA
and to any next steps;
5 note that due diligence on the RITA has confirmed that there were significant commercial
and ownership issues that existed prior to COVID-19, and that the long-term commercial
viability of RITA may be in question unless significant reforms are made;

6 note that RITA is likely to require further additional support in the future to position the
industry for recovery,

Gee Chief are ya nervous? Peters must have a scorched earth policy in mind rattling China's cage today? Poke the Panda?....I bet the PM wasn't in his corner, how long until China starts with sanctions starting with Fontera and milk power moving onto thoroughbreds.

I've a friend who trains at Newmarket, he said the place is alive with agents buying up big, the word is, get in now as there may be no tomorrow.

Whatever.  You must be getting old and senile and forgetting history.

Everyone flexed their muscles in 1989 and it didn't change racing.

It's mostly posturing.  Winnie is a xenophobe from a way back and he is looking to drum up votes.  When was the Extradition treaty last used anyway!

We won't be getting into a trade war with China.  FFS how are we going to pay off all the debt this Government has borrowed!

You're 2/3rds correct, I'm old and forgetting history as that goes with getting old...oh, I'm senile too then.......so you got it right 100%.

Cindy will bolt in, just print money, but you need the mint in Canberra to do that as you can't print your own.....however any truth in the rumour your next currency will be the Yuan/Renminbi?

Joe I suggest you and Winnie get around a bottle whiskey and share your conspiracy theories amongst yourselves.

Winnie said this morning - "There are 1.4 billion people in China who are desperate for our supplies.... There is every reason for the regime to be mindful of that."

Really Winnie?  What supplies would they be?  Can't be food because we only produce an excess to feed 15 million.  Can't be oil because the Princess won't let us find it.

Mmmm can you help Joe?

I'm saddened to raise this again Chief, however, those low Bastards from the Chinese mainland masquerading as human beings storm Jimmy Lai's offices this morning and arrest him for colluding with foreign powers. The end is nigh for that little Island, and horse racing will go. There will be a civil war there, bloodshed like we've not seen for a long time and Taiwan will go next.

Pty those Pacific Islands that sold out to the Chinese overlords, keep an eye out for the navy vessels visiting close to NZ shortly, maybe on reflection David Lange shouldn't have pissed off the yanks, cos boy you're going to need them shortly.

It will hit the fan, however if you're a true socialist you've nothing to fear, just learn how to work a wok, and smile whilst choking.

Well the NZTR funding of various races is all there on the website under Final Funding Policy 3. Iconic Race Funding which took seconds to find.

With regard to the 2yo and 3yo Karaka Million races they are identical:

$50K minimum stake funding (Listed) plus and additional $200k making it $250k for each race. The club has to come up with $750k.

Do you agree that we, the industry, should be funding Vela's folly to the tune of half a million dollars?  Do you understand how many maiden races this could fund to keep grass roots people in the game?

I guarantee the bulk of the industry, the real people, are against funding this closed race series......run a Vox Populi there would be no surprises.

I don't believe the Karaka Millions is a folly.  However the breeding industry through the sales/nomination fees should pay for it.  Not the rest of the industry.

I went up to the Karaka Millions night this year and I would say it was the best race meeting by a mile that I have attended for a number of  years. It is a great concept that has absolutely worked.

No question about that.  But the question is should the rest of the industry subsidise the two sweepstake races?

The short answer is Yes!!

The six race card has become the showpiece of NZ racing. Both attendance and turnover just keeps on growing.

Each to their own but if what you say is true then it is a sad indictment on the state of New Zealand racing.  Note it doesn't pay its way from a punting revenue perspective.

If the races are going to be funded by the wider industry then the races need to be opened up to the wider industry participants . If you want it to be restricted to horses bought out of particular sales then they need to be funded purely by those companies .

Does the Queensland magic millions get wider industry funding ?

I do agree tho , fantastic race meeting , whether there or on TV .
