Hoss123 Posted January 13, 2021 Posted January 13, 2021 Just hearing through on trackside last day training for Geoff and Jude Knight. Great supporters of Southland harness. What a way to hang up your training boots with that win from Deus Ex. 1 Quote

Brodie Posted January 13, 2021 Posted January 13, 2021 They are certainly going to be a big loss to the Otago/Southland region racing wise. They brought in a lot of new owners and Geoff was a real enthusiast! 2 1 Quote

They certainly will be, in many forms, they were always supporting and supplying many horse numbers for those meetings in the deep south. 2 Quote

Dougie Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Central Otago has never been a massive harness region but why not, the amount of wealth in Queenstown/Cromwell/Alex etc there must be thousands of potential owners floating around there...... Huge crowds at Roxburgh and Cromwell yet the suits only give them a couple of token race meetings each year which are HUGE in turnover and crowds--- why couldn't Cromwell grass hold meetings in March/April or November/December too, 100% sure would get 12 full fields. absolutely no reason the Friday/Sunday 2 day thing wouldn't work here, plenty of Canterbury trainers would come, yes wouldn't get the same crowds outside of the holiday season but turnover would still smash what they'd get at Forbury or Invercargill. For this whole area looks like not one real public trainer now - Ginger Woodhouse and Lionel Sinnamon just train there own horses and are on the mature side of life!!!!! I'm an old prick but can remember when Murray/Marcus Hamilton had plenty of horses, hobby trainers like Buckley who I think trained at Queenstown along with a few others who might have 2 or 3 but now pretty much nothing from Queenstown to Dunedin. 3 Quote
eljay Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Still a top area for breeding champs isn't it? 1 Quote

You Doug are simply making too much sense,I honestly can't see how a new date for Omakau can't be found, the guys running harness racing have some rather strange ideas,no Eastern Southland bar one day,Forbury and Waterlea almost died,Taranaki has died, sad but true.it is a large area and a large population, token days seems a bit short changing the area really 2 1 Quote
mikeynz Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 I think Roxburgh were for the chop too, what was the idea there,l can't remember now, maybe a shift to Gore,Forbury or something but hang on they were almost gone too. What happened to Hamilton, seemed to vanish from racing scene. Funny how times change,Central used to provide the bulk of the Otago footy team, is there anyone from Central made it in recent times,I'm not up with such things as much these days One more thing,I read an article on Woodhouse in the odt a while back, stated he had done 1.3million kilometres in his horse truck, that's some distance by my reckoning. Murray hamilton was training a small team of gallopers, but was put out for 3 months in 2016 after a dispute with those who ran the omakau racecourse. he then got a further suspension when they were trained under a former employees name, then another when he was helping someone else out down the road apparently. I think i read that he was taking those that ran the racecourse to court because he felt unfairly treated. Don't know the merits of his case, but i do know racecourses are often run in a way that serves the best interests of those running them. Rodney King said "can't we all just get along" during the 1992 LA riots. Well the same has applied to some of our racecourses at times. Edited January 15, 2021 by the galah Quote

Meetings are turning over $1.3m to $1.8m on NZ TAB, add to that a building Aussie market etc, racing on grass at this time of the year and over shorter distances is the way to go, limit expenses by having 2 days at each track over 4 days and its a recipe to print money. mikeynz Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 People are cutting costs everywhere.running shorter races is saving tread on the sulky wheels lol 2 Quote

Think he trained Kid Columbus who went on to win a grand national hurdles, can remember if he trained it then or not, remember it winning a flat race one day, may have been Oamaru, paid over 100$, think he had an apprentice called Jo Chong, or maybe she just rode for him, the kid went to Australia and never raced due to injury. 2 Quote

Interesting that most of the Knights current runners have been transferred to Matty Williamson. Just another step up the training ladder for Matty, who is close friends with the Knights. Quote

Yes, I think Matty should just stick to driving, not training, hasn’t seem to have got the knack of that side of it yet. Quote
