The Centaur
Todays Wanganui meeting throws light on the incompetence of those running racing. 10 races, mostly capacity fields, plenty eliminated. I have always thought January is the month for getting the public off to the races mainly by having meetings in exotic locations. Instead judging by the lack of crowd at Wanganui this is supposed to be another "industry day". What a waste of asset. January dosen't require large fields or many races per day. Just needs plenty initiatives to make the day. e.g. by adding barrier trials to the days menu. Wellington Anniversary day used to feature Trentham and Awapuni i.e. the Ashurst Club. In particular the fields at Awapuni were usually quite large. Now nothing on Sunday, Monday of Anniversary weekend. Surely a meeting at Tauherenikau or Otaki could have been programmed if not Trentham. What happened to Stratford instead we had a rubbish meeting at New Plymouth. Why not more meetings in the deep south where there seems ample horses at the moment. Plenty other examples allround. OK the dates were programmed when covid a factor nevertheless surely given the "genius" capability down in Wellington they could have got some flexibility into the dates.

These dates have nothing to do with Covid , they are the same dates as we have been running for a number of seasons . The only change has been the regular mucking around of the Wgtn cup meeting which has been chopped around to whatever suits the millions , it used to be an ICONIC meeting , hard to believe . Then you have the absolute stupidity of having no race meeting in the CD on Wgtn Anniversary Monday , don't tell me they couldn't have put on a low key meeting at Otaki or Tauherenikau , captive audience but nowhere to go . BUt it's OK we can all traipse up to Matamata for our anniversary meeting . I've given up on any common sense being applied .

I agree completely, the calendar is appalling and killing racing not enhancing it. But the calendar is no longer being used for the benefit of racing , it has an ulterior motive mostly political in nature.

Last time was 2015 , then Woodville for 2 years , then no meeting 2018 , then at Otaki last 2 years . 2016 they went 3 Saturdays in a row which is when the whole Wgtn Cup carnival started to become less relevant as the focus went on the millions , and even which 3 Saturdays has been mucked around with . 3 meetings over 3 Saturday doesn't work , trainers , owners etc all came down and stayed the week whe it was run over the week , it was a carnival . Maybe it's just me but this meeting just seems to be becoming less and less relevant , after day one everybody's focus shift north for the millions and then it's " oh do we really have to head back down there ". If it has to work around the other meeting then just make it a 2 day meeting . And i'm not bashing the millions meeting , it is a relevant race day now in it's own right , but for gods sake there has to be some sense of history to our racing .

I agree. When I lived in Wellington I always remembered racing on Anniversary Day. The Wellesley Stakes for 2yr olds has well and truly been screwed. To the point where horses aiming for the Karaka Million would rather race at Tauranga tomorrow!
nomates
I may be called the Wellesley but it is just a 2yo race , and yet again we are just handing out black type with the cornflakes . It's actually becoming a farce .

Lets face it , its just a continuation of where Black Type racing in this country has been heading for a while.

nomates
Well now as a rule our best horses are nearly always mares because every colt and gelding with any breeding or colt is sold out of the country , god forbid where we would be without Te Akau , they may not be every ones cuppa tea but there methods keep blood in the country . Imagine what the millions races would have been like without them .

Agree on the mares, not so sure on TA keeping blood in the country , I'd prefer to see a greater spread of the top bloodstock in the country than what there currently is. Also I'm not convinced TA are keeping anything in the country the Australians don't want, i.e. they usually get what they want.

Reefton
That Wellington sequence really is a joke though - Premier day followed by feature day followed by Premier day over fifteen days. Given the lack of CD horses and interest surely they should shift Awapuni back a week to new years weekend then run the two Wellington Premier days on the equivalent of last Saturday and this Saturday to avoid the Millions or else run it the two weeks after the Millions Hardly conducive to a carnival atmosphere to have a low key(comparatively) meeting plonked in the middle of fifteen days Edited January 14, 2021 by Reefton

If they don't want an anniversary meeting they should just run it over 2 weekends as you suggest .
