Brodie
What on earth is going on when Addington only has 3 and 4 nominations for its 2 non winners races on Friday meeting this week. There are also bugerall no’s for the tightest class race of the night unfortunately also! Yes I know it is Winter but something seriously up when you only bet 7 noms for two races both for $10k! There is a meeting at Addington Sunday but that meeting also has low numbers nominating! Forbury Thursday night has buggerall starters and it appears that there is just not enough horses available to match the nunber of races being programmed at the moment! What is the reason for this do you reckon, when we have been getting advised that harness racing is going well since Covid19 decimated things? Are we really going that well? What can be done to improve horse numbers? Edited June 28, 2021 by Brodie
mikeynz
i think the southern area has enough meetings and probably in reality so does Canterbury. There was a spike in interest this time last year when racing resumed after coved, one wonders if a complete break for a few weeks would be a smart idea. What can be done to improve horse numbers? It's hard to understand mate. I don't get it. Addington meeting Friday last had small fields too, but Timaru had larger fields on the Sunday for less stakes. WTF? It is head-shaking stuff. You've got the best track in the southern hemisphere, it's situated close to the main training areas in Canterbury and not too far for Mid and North Canterbury trainers to travel. It is a track where every runner has a chance if good enough and if driven properly. Stakes are higher for the Friday meetings than other tracks. You would think trainers would opt for Addington but no let's go to Timaru instead. Again, I don' get it. Timaru is a mediocre track and hard to win from the back. Yes, it's winter so horse numbers are down but you would think fields would be bigger than they are. I don't understand it?
Robalan
The trainers don't need to worry about the cost of travelling to Timaru and other far flung places, they don't pay the bills. Many have the perception that it might be easier to win a race at Timaru, but if you have a look at the Addington fields you will find that the same horses are racing at both tracks
the galah
Part of the answer is to change the current handicapping system to allow horses to drop as far as a rating 30 level. The current rating 40 still sees too many uncompetitive rating 40's,racing when they realistically don't have much chance.Horses like this are ultimately discarded by connections, particularly the bigger stables. I know some may say to this suggestion that your only catering for a low quality horse. But if you observe the comments from the people that say that, they always say that about the bottom level,no matter where it sits. So there has to be change if you want to increase the numbers. Stake levels for races between R30 and r40 would have to be about $3000 a race. Its an obvious solution. It takes nothing away from those racing at the higher ratings. It will be the current missing incentive for some connections to continue, and it creates an extra race or two at times when full cards can't be run. The down side of my suggestion is some of those who have influence over the implementation of such a change can't relate to why some connections would keep that type of horse going, therefore have a preconceived bias against such a change. Well they need to get with the times. Perhaps the greatest expert on this suggestion would be michael house. He races the most lower grade horses, and i have read that he supports this idea. And finally to those who say who would bet on them. Well i was watching an interview with a professional punter form perth on the gallops. What he said was exactly what brodie and myself have been saying. That is,if you do your homework, there is far greater value to be found at the lower grade meetings than there is at the higher grade metropolitan meetings. I am trying to 'mend my ways' of supporting just horses I think can win/ win easily . Can't believe it though . 2 hours to the first race at Albion today and STILL no fixed price markets up TAB or sportsbet!!!. NO MARKETS are up for our big Saturday night metro meetings either !!!! I'm Very ANGRY harness gets 'treated like this' !!!!!It's July . Albion Park has features all through the month. No fixed price up yet ???? I could do a market for them in about an hour for Saturday night. A feature night with lots of visitors, I reckon I could (without computer help even) Just a disgrace they can't/won't do it. !!!! ALL the fricken Sat gallop meetings have a market up fixed price already. just poor cousin trotting .No. I'll end up just betting on those and harness misses out. Just not right. just incompetence (or poor service anyway) Can I ask whether you can bet (fixed) over there Auckland and Addington already for tomorrow??

As far as your question relating to whether i bet fixed odds or tote. Well i only bet 5 minutes out and bet whatever i think gives best value. You get monthly rebates if you bet on the tote if you spend certain amounts,so i factor that in. I've never had the problem brodie has,as far as ever having any fixed odds restrictions placed on me. I'm guessing i dont bet in the large amounts brodie does, but i do know the tab will take into consideration how much someone puts through the tote when considering whether to impose restrictions for fixed odds betting. I do find sometimes that you can reduce the odds of longer priced horses if you bet solely on the tote, especially for a place,so you have to factor that in. I've actually just very recently expanded my own form research to include queensland harness. I haven't done any betting, and doubt i will be able to spend too much due to the small pools. As long as i think they are all trying i will see how it goes. Edited July 1, 2021 by the galah

Yes , I find it quite annoying the 'trots ' betting is effected badly by small pools and restrictions you and Brodie mention, and the FAILURE to put up odds at all, let alone small odds hahaha lol.. The gallopers with the bigger pools and LOT more people betting, obviously have a lot more Losers . i.e People losing money to the betting agencies on each and every race... At the harness, people know what they are doing , example I think you , I ,Brodie, Davis, JJflash we could all win each and every harness meeting. BECAUSE the racing is Honest and the HORSES RUN TRUE TO FORM ?? way more than gallopers I would suggest. I think betting agencies hate us, and call us thieves on wheels etc. Even Though Jockeys BET waaaay more than us poor trotting folk. 5 minutes ago, the galah said: gammalite, when betting on harness do you bet on the tote or fixed odds over there? Always fixed. I gave up betting all togeather for a couple of years before the fixed betting started up. Couldn't stand the odds being slashed after the start of a race. was absolute joke and happened every race. King of Swing might show $2 win for example , until the race has betting CLOSED as the race starts , THEN they TAB, change it half way through the race to $1.10 win. Was a total NOT WORTH WHILE excercise. rip off time and time again. If King of Swing shows $2 fixed , I am on , and collect that divvie. never in doubt lol.............. Is 'Fixed Price' open for betting Addington + Auckland in advance there ?(today?) or is it just hours before they jump like they are here in Qld. have no clue what they're paying till the day. which sucks.

The fixed odds do come out the night or afternoon the day before the harness meeting and Saturday morn for Sunday trots, which is good. Odds are normally pretty short overall however there is value if you look. The problem is getting enough on as they slash them as soon as they can. Personally havent bet on the tote since fixed odds came in as it just an absolute waste of time for punters trying offload a decent amount ad pools on tote now pretty pathetic! Still can make a living from punting if you were serious but nothing like it should be.

There is one market open for the FFA saturday night that I will pop here in the 'Wondai's Mate Open' featuring a few of the Fab kiwi's. SPANKEM is Already slashed in to $1.50 the win in QLD !!!!!!!! that was quick.??? lol.. my poor favourite horse COLT THIRTY ONE towelled up by stunning NZer " LL COOL J " last week , now has to deal with Spankem, Turn It Up and Copy That from NZ this week. what a bummer lol........ actually he's not that poor as just cruising up to $1,000,000 won next start or 2. McCarthy drawn to lead with 'Balraj,' so makes 'Copy That' and 'Turn It Up' double figure odds. Wonder if Kylie can drive with Gusto like sister Natalie , and press for the lead .
