Covid-19 restrictions may mean Canterbury horse racing's biggest week of the year could be closed to most punters for the first time in 117 years.

While organisers have confirmed today racing will go ahead - it cannot promise the public will be allowed to attend.

Addington Raceway CEO Brian Thompson said this afternoon that Addington Cup Week would be going ahead but the public would be shut out entirely unless the region was moved down to level 1 restrictions.

At alert level 2, events can go ahead but with restrictions.

Events and event facilities — for example, stadiums, cinemas and casinos can have a maximum of 100 people in any indoor or outdoor defined space.

Addington Cup Week 2021 kicks off with the IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup Day on Tuesday November 9.

The Show Day Races are scheduled for Friday November 12.

Tickets were scheduled to go on sale this week but have been put on hold due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Thompson said the decision to hold off was due to a lack of certainty that the venue will be able to be open to the public.

"The races will still go ahead, but if the country is still under mass gathering restrictions it will not be possible to hold Cup Week as a publicly accessible event," he said.

"We are planning for an alert level 2 event, where we can safely host the racing industry in 100 person groups in different parts of our facilities, with the ability to scale-up if we move to alert level 1 with no restrictions on mass gatherings, by the 19th of October.

I’ve been going to a mates on cup day at his home, he puts on food all day, from 11 am its whitebait patties with bubbles and strawberries on greeting, club Sammie’s, saucy rolls through the afternoon. Paula patties and leg of ham hot with bourbon glaze Sammie’s with mustard at 6.  FAR better than going over, we put $10 ea in a syndicate. Last year we got $30 something back. I love cup day.

That sounds FAB Honest John.  Bubbles & strawberries yum.

Cup itself thinking its open, no particular stable has a wall of horses to team drive. So that is good, makes it a fair playing field. Should be a fair start too for ALL this year.

A number of chances, so hopefully be a GREAT RACE.

The Press/Stuff have picked up story too. Suppose, it's quite BIG news with regard to it being a once in a century + thing to happen re 117 years.

Wonder how much it will effect turnover should that happen?

At least you are doing your bit to incentivise people to get the JAB. If I hadn’t already had it you’d promise to not post again would rank right up there with a chance to win a fridge

I will probably get the Vax when the incentive reaches a fridge full of Ranfurly and a Turf Digest, delivered.

Tuatara Pilsner, it’s on tap at the feathers in we’ll, very lovely.

It was on here at the Dicken's Inn but at $13 a glass the Stoke Pilsner at $20 a case is much better.

Woops I'm doing what @Karrotsisback does to me and hijacking her Topic.

The woman in the floral dress reminds me of one of the most memorable Cup Day's.  I can't for the life of me remember who won the Cup that year as I was drinking champagne with a very attractive lady and we missed it!!!!

TAB could not afford to have the Brodster tips made public.

Hell I wouldn't make them public!!!  I know what you lot can do to a dividend!

Although publishing them might give them a better chance because sure as hell @Michael aka @Mikie would try and out do @Brodie and thus improve the chances of the Brodster's picks!!!

Just got back from a walk, weirdness is starting to happen, with lockdown level 3. Think its starting to get to peeps.

This chick was in her full PJs as I walked past her, she was on her phone, standing outside her house but on the footpath & every now & again doing these weird High kicks. Then soon after that this car pulled up as if about to go into the drive-way that I was about to walk past, kind of cutting me off, so I stopped. Then it stopped & didn't actually go into the drive-way, I figured ok its going to do a U-Turn using drive-way to do so. So I continue to walk past the front of it & the dude winds down window & asks if I want a ride. WTF. Clearly Im in exercise gear. No Karrots do not get in the car. Politely said NO & walked faster HOME. Yikes.

Right back to this.

Haha, never been to Cup Day, floral isn't really my thing, nor is fashion in the fields. But it is nice to dress up tho.

Hey Honest John, yes read somewhere you are off to Europe soon. So can't be doing too badly 👍 Sounds fantastic!

Yeah this area is by no means low social economic INFACT there are some BIG banging houses around. The car that pulled up looked like someone from not in area. There is quite a bit of construction going on around the place around many streets too. To get in, you would have to folk out well over 1 million.

Nice to make your online BOAY acquaintance 😃

Righto logging off folks. Got some Netflix to watch.

PS watched this doco last nite, the car race driver M Schumacher. What a sad tale. Worth a watch.
