Damian Lane will be missing from the first day of Flemington's Melbourne Cup Carnival after he was suspended by stewards at Caulfield on Saturday for excessive whip use on Tristarc Stakes winner Colette.

Lane pleaded guilty to the charge of striking the Godolphin-trained mare with the whip more than five times before the 100-metre mark - but he deferred his suspension for a week to allow him to partner Verry Elleegant in next Saturday's Cox Plate.

Stewards suspended Lane for eight meetings for breaching the whip rule for striking the mare ten times before the 100-metre mark, five strikes over the limit and 12 in total, and fined him $4500, which is half of his winning fee.

Lane will ride at the Cox Plate meeting and then take his suspension, meaning he will miss the four Group 1 races on Victoria Derby Day, including the likely ride aboard Colette in the Empire Rose Stakes.

If Damian Lane hadn't have got stuck into Collette when he did the lazy B will still be lobbing lazily behind the field!

Did the punters a service did Lane.

I agree , but the issue now is there is a rule , ride within those parameters or cope the punishment , it aint gonna change so everybody needs to move on .

And i agree about whether Collette wins without it , but unfortunately we have to live with it now .

I'm much more concerned with riders hitting horses that are obviously beaten , a much worse look , i'm no softy but it gets me bloody angry , especially when the ride contributes to a horse getting beaten and then the jock hits it , i know who needs the stick around their arse .

Champion jockey Nash Rawiller copped a suspension and $20,000 fine for breaking the whip rules aboard third placegetter Eduardo in the $15 million The Everest at Randwick on Saturday.

Rawiller told stewards he was “shocked” he’d struck his mount on nine occasions, four more than permitted, prior to the final 100 metres of the race.

“He’s not a horse I really punish,” Rawiller told stewards. “He’s a confidence horse.

“I try more to persuade him rather than overdo things.

“I just feel he hit that big a flat spot over say 100 metres and I hit every second or third stride and I obviously used up my (strikes) before the 100.

“I normally would have just given him two or three.

“I don’t even think it was a heat of the moment. I was trying to build my momentum and it was more a horsemanship thing than anything.

“I’m actually shocked I hit him that many times.”

Rawiller pleaded guilty to the stewards charge and it’s the sixth time he’s been charged in New South Wales for whip breaches over the past 12 months.

He’s also been charged on another three occasions for whip breaches in Queensland over the past 12 months.

Stewards slapped Rawiller with a $20,000 fine and six metropolitan and provincial meeting suspension which commenced immediately, and he returns to the saddle on Friday, October 29.

Eduardo’s third placing resulted in Rawiller earning a riding percentage of $70,000.

Rawiller has rides on Private Eye in the Golden Eagle and Think It Over in the Rosehill Gold Cup at Rosehill on October 30.

The suspension cost him the ride aboard Forbidden Love in the $2 million The Invitation (1400m) at Randwick next week.

But with some horses you just can't "move on"!  She's lobbing along thinking it's another one of those bloody track gallops or trials - can't be shagged raising a gallop.

Lane probably would have got done for not giving the horse "every chance" if it had got beaten carrying the tote on her back.  What was he going to do?  Stop the race and have a one on one chat with her about her attitude?

I agree about bashing horses that have done their best but these rules don't help that either.  "Why DIDN'T you hit the horse the allowed number of times in the run home?"

May be we should just give the whips a different name?

He is one of the reasons i am proud to call myself a Scotsman . First time i seen him live was in Hamilton , 3 and 1/4 hours he was on stage , my face muscles and ribs were so sore from laughing , up there with whiskey as being synonymous with Scotland .

Well some things don't make sense , COLETTE took a bit more winding up than normal , so then jockey punished for winning.?

Should be given 'Extra' congratulations  if anything, and thousands more slings from the punters.

The thing with Collette was that she was really coming off a Caulfield Cup prep , had an issue so missed some work and this was a catch up race , so she was always going to be a bit dour at the distance , so what a great mare she is to be able to win it , perhaps the jock could have looked at going a bit earlier before the pace went on , just a thought .

What a nonsense rule.

It's a travesty and an indictment on the stupid pricks who dream up these preposterous rules and even more of an indictment on the grotesquely stupid pricks who enforce them.

Could you imagine someone being prosecuted for belting their dog (twice) and then fined $3,500 ???

S Wynne fined, suspended, you name it, a serial flogger, Irelands gain, NZ's loss, if there is a next life, the horses will ride the jockeys and one S Wynne will cop a good flogging.

Go look thru the stipes report for the last 8/9 days , plenty of jocks still don't follow the rules , plenty fined and i think 1 got a double suspension . Slow learners .

But S Wynne is a very average rider , but considered one of the better ones down south , how bad does that make the rest .
