NZ cup carnival in the future

Silly question I suppose, but I was wondering if the CJC has a five or ten year plan for the Cup carnival? Things it wants to change, new growth areas, changes to programme etc?? Or is supplying enough food and grog to the suits  its top priority??

Well there is the old adage "if it aint broke don't fix it".  Still the best carnival in NZ bar none.  Even crazy Jacinda can't stifle a great week in Canterbury, try as she might!

in all honesty with Labour/Greens in power I think the main goal is just to sustain and keep racing.  They have killed southern jumps racing, are gunning for the puppies big time and will be coming for racing generally next.  There is always innovation and new ideas, the Riccarton team are a passionate and committed bunch ... Couplands Mile comes to mind.  You and I are, of course, welcome to send them new ideas and propose new funding streams 🙂

How exactly did Labour and the Greens kill southern jumps racing?

The Couplands Mile isn't a new race. It is the old Churchill Stakes. It has always been there. It was boosted in stake and status to fill the gap when the 2,000 Guineas became a $1m race and was moved to the first day, as they didn't want a $1m race on mid week. Sadly it never managed to boost the crowd on the first day.

The only new race that has been added to Cup Week over the last 50 years or so is the fillies and mares race on the middle day, but that wasn't invented by the CJC. It is the old SI Breeders Stakes that was developed by the Geraldine Racing Club that the CJC inherited. Cup Week is actually short one feature race these days as the Canterbury Gold Cup was moved elsewhere.

Remember the immortal Show Gate winning the Stewards the Canterbury Gold Cup and the Churchill in a week.  The year before she won the Stewards and the Churchill and a couple of years later only went down a head to the great Grey Way in the Stewards , won the CGC on the Wednesday and got beat by Tonic Time in the Churchill.  And that was when NZ horses were well up to the best of the Aussies.

Yes that's right.  She had come back form Aussie and been thrown into the paddock.  Like a lot of tragic things about her it is a pity the Aussies never saw the best of her.  They would still be talking about it.

Michael Craig would tell you that she had nine days work.

Lived in a paddock of ragwort,  didn't get a rug until she won a race, which was at Oamaru. 

I was there, witnessed a small bay streak with red and white colours smoking down the outside.  Little did I realise then that I had seen one of the best to look through a bridle in NZ.

Interesting that the NZ Trotting Cup has had more publicity than Riccarton so far this week.  Seems without the party at Riccarton there is no interest.

I don't want to ignite a 'Winxs bashing' but to you buggers that saw Showgate do these things and the quality of opposition she had to beat to do that, do you think Winx could have done that? I don't but hey IMO.......

I think she would have been just as good - probably better.  WINX could run time and the class of opposition she faced was light years ahead of Showgates era.

Here's a hypothetical in response, Happy Clapper, he'd be up to beating Copper Belt then? Happy C earned millions running second to Winx, but if he was great opposition then the likes of Copper Belt, Grey Way and Showgate would be cannon fodder for him.......I think you need to seek out a new dealer Chief, he's cutting your weed with weeds.

Not possible to rate great horses from different eras and regimes...IMO...suffice to say that Winx would NEVER have been treated like Show Gate was.

La Mer was racing around the same time, on occasion they were compared as well, unfairly.  La Mer also was treated like a princess, and would never have been subjected to the handling that Show Gate experienced.

Dunedin Gold Cup [ mile and a half ] then, the next day, the Timaru Cup [ one mile ].    Her incredible feats at NZ  Cup meeting on that short prep, as outlined above.

We have all seen horses, unused to stable life, melt down when removed from their familiar paddocks.  The only time Show Gate went to Aus, she just didn't cope at all. It wasn't lack of class that felled her, it was just an environment that she was completely unsuited to, and given no chance to adapt.

We had a useful two year old, way back, called Zebak.   Won the Champagne stakes, and then lined up and won the 1400m two year old race later in the meeting.

His owners were sitting at the stables on the Sunday after, having a half-G and reminiscing, as was the habit, when a truck pulled in over in the visitors' area.   It had come from Lyttelton and was carrying Show Gate, among others.

One of the guys went over and stuck his head around the corner, came back and said, you wouldn't believe it, that mare is standing in the pissing rain and cold wind, with a cotton sheet on, shivering, and trying to pick at some chaff in a feedbin on the ground before the wind blew it away.  It took a bit of persuasion to stop him taking a warmer rug over to put on her.

Mouse [McCann] was at Trentham  and witnessed Show Gate taken into the birdcage, covered in shit and dirt.  Gordy was told to take her away and tidy her up.  He put the saddle on the weigh-in stalls, took her away and hosed her all over,  brought her back in and saddled her again.  Gospel.  Think she won the Trentham Stakes.

Show Gate wouldn't have got within cooee of Winx.

I might have given Show Gate some points for versatility but Verry Elleegant now holds that mantle by a country mile or two.
