Raced and led against the pacers one night at Addington. Run down in the straight I seem to recall.

Yes on Show Day 1980 he led the pacers in the NZ FFA

1st section in 26.8

Thru 1st 800 in 58.6

1200 in 1.28.4

Mile in 1.57.4

Sadly I have never seen a video of that race.

Raced over a mile at Washdyke against the pacers, was run down by Locarno close to home, burnt the rest of them off, some horse really, that race is on you tube somewhere.

I think Johny lincoln was trained or driven by another of the Holmes gang, anybody know?

Was trained by G  Holmes(Graham) and later by Jack Carmichael.

Graham Holmes was unfortunately killed in a freak accident while trimming a hedge in front of his property, I suspect that might be why the horse went to Carmichaels.

Macdoon was trained by Freeman.  It was very well bred being out of a very good race mare in Barbara Del

Likewise.

Back in the day you just had to be.

My Dad hired a Hilman Avenger from Avis in Hokitika and left the family car with mum so he and I could go to Cup week.

He let me drive and I scared the shit out of him going from Hokitika to Riccarton in 2 hours 20 mins.

Great week at the races.  Hands Down won the Cup and backed up to win the FFA.

Koiro Trelay the Galloping Cup.

What actually happened to Graham Holmes, am I correct or not that he got struck by a tyre or something that came of a vehicle, there was something strange about his misfortune, I may be completely off track on this one, correct me if I'm wrong, I think it was about this time of year too, I might be wrong on that one as well, but I I'm pretty sure Johny Lincolm was Rob and his transport ministers venture into horse ownership, there was more than one Colin Mac, I cant spell the full name off the cuff but most will know who o mean, there was the guy who use to have the green colors, wasn't he a shoe salesman or something gee I'm moving off topic but hey it's all interesting i guess.

I might even do some research myself, always good to keep the mind ticking over.

Correct

Owner Trainer of NZ and Great Northern Derby winner Mighty Me

Formal Fella, Quinella, Waylynne and her daughter What Cutie just a few of his winners.

Nope.  When you had learnt to drive on that road you knew all the short cuts.

240km.  So you only needed to average about 110km/hr.  The Avenger could do 160km/hr.

I did some research, interesting character, must have been some money in shoes, probably a different kettle of fish these days.

Finished in 89, died in 08 at 85, was a traveler, Greymouth ,Forbury and Hutt Park and Auckland with Mighty Me, some of these guys probably enjoyed loading up the truck and hitting the road, a bit of a adventure, now a lot of those venues are gone, such is life.

Yes you are correct Mike, off a trailer I think.  What are the odds?, just happened to be in the exact wrong spot when a tyre flies off a vehicle at the exact wrong time and place.

Also saw an obituary for A.K Holmes when looking up about Graham.  A.K was involved in a horse switch incident.  Can't remember the names of the horses but both were purchased out of Trevor Thomas stable prior to the scandal.

The world driving Champion Kevin Holmes . was quite a story in the day. Tried a suicide after the 'Incident' as guess it didn't go as well as intended. Woke up in hospital days later after the shoot attempt and jumped out the hospital window to his death instead. only 38 yold. Probably one of the most tragic Nz harness events to happen.

Like-wise in Oz, one of the greatest ever Vinnie Knight at just 37 years old , shooting himself dead due to a relationship issue, while ruling the harness world of Victoria with an extraordinary record up to his death in 1991. Had young daughters left behind as well. unbelievable tragedy.

Two countries sharing a similar tragic outcome , still grieving decades later. RIP Kevin and Vinnie.

He started off 100m behind handicap at Hutt Park, against loose class trotters and set a 2400m record at the time of 3.09 or so. winning by 10 lengths. Quite a horse old Scotch Tar. probably the most 'erratic' I ever saw. headed for the outside fence at Alexandra park with Wolfie driving one night in the home straight , veering right off , but still won. Owner trainer 'Slim' Dykeman engaged Wolfie and Bob Cameron for a lot of the win's and that paid off well (getting the best going round involved on many occasions)  driving that very difficult horse.

I'm sure it was Stoch Tar that went into a wild gallop at Alex Prk  one night and looked to be quarter of a lap behind.  Reg said " Throw your tickets away on the favourite  "   When he started to make ground in icredible fashion,  Reg yelled  " You better go and look for those tickets "    He got up and won !        Some amazing horses around in those days.

One was Oscar Peterson I think. He had a top 2 year old in the day, Testing Times which was sold to U.S.

Testing Times

That's a co-incidence you mentioned this horse, that Kevin Holmes used to drive TESTING TIMES , as here he is in this photo running a national record , while doing that 'SCOTCH TAR' trick of veering off the track to the outside fence at Alexandra Park .

What an excellent moment in time captured in this shot !!!

Testing Times nearly cleaned up for his whole 2 year old season,  with 14-15 odd wins before finishing 5th to the great LORD MODULE at seasons end,  in the Nz Juvenile Championship at Auckland in June 1977.

Does anyone else remember this?  I think the consensus at the time was that it wasn't accidental but I couldn't find any articles on this though I  am sure it would have been in the papers when it happened

they were enroute to america and someone swithced halters - the galling part was I was at the meeting and should have noticed the difference as one - Alec? had white markings from memory - think the winning one paid plenty and might have paid for my trip

Just reading a biography of Muldoon, and it makes reference to Noodlum and his co owner, the incompetent cabinet  minister, Colin Mclachlan.

I have less than fond memories of Mclachlan, but have a vacant patch  as regards Noodlum. Any particular memories, thoughts??

Ludwig you must not be a scholar of harness racing - Noodlum is a hero and one of the best around - you have a lot to say but admit you have never heard of Noodlum - strange
