Wingatui fields.

8 races, feely small fields  no Tyler's, only two more meetings in Southland left, seems once Easters over, they almost pull the pin in Southland despite the good season they have had.

On another tangent the first AWT meeting at Riccarton thursday, I guess it will be interesting or maybe not.

It will be VERY interesting Michael.  Mixed messages coming about the state of that track.  Bernard Saundry(not that he will care I don't suppose) and co should be on their knees praying that the nomination response is good because if it is not.........

Is that the state of the track now, or the state of the track in general..?

The state of that all weather over the period of its use Mike.  For all that it is like a lot of things in racing - if you had a dollar for every story you heard about it you wouldn't need to work again.

When nominations close tomorrow the true state of the joint and the opinions of the trainers will be revealed.

I read an article about the Taplins looking to move to Australia, they will certainly be missed when they go, have always boosted the horse numbers in the deep south.

Could you blame them ?

It is easy to gloat about the big meetings in oz but there is some very average stuff too.

Getting back to AWT, noms lunchtime, they are running a feature meeting at the end of the month there, will the better runners be keen, time will tell.

With the Taplins leaving, and the Tyler's and Robert Dennis downsizing, that leaves a big hole in Southland. Any new players emerging??

Certainly not, not a criticism on my part, just the runners they have supplied over the years, will leave a big whole for sure.

Is it compete, if so so big changes??

Nagh it's only half done and it's missing some dates.

If you google race calandar or something you can find the complete calandar but they have it in that arsehole format but it is what it is.

What a surprise , noms look a bit underwhelming in a number of races, which doesn't bode well for its future useage.

These AWT will have the opposite effect of what they are proclaiming in the short to medium term (they won't last the long term) i.e. reduce participation in the industry not enhance it.

Isn't reducing participation not enhancing it the(unstated) aim of the NZ Racing hierarchy?

They are doing a bloody great job if it is!

Only 7 races and mostly small fields, interesting, I wonder if there will be a major fawning by the trackside crew as was the case last year ar Cambridge.

Only 1 ballot.

The real question is why do we have Synthetic racing starting 5th May at Riccarton. Tracks are good and usually are for another month, so why the need for Synthetic racing now? Given they have  synthetic racing at Riccarton every 2 weeks for the next 4 months  why not start it in June?

To look at it another way I guess it can be crap weather in May but as it at present it's pretty good at this point, next year, who knows.

The people on the big money know better than us mere mortals. I'm sure they have a spreadsheet that justifies it all.

A certain irony the sole ballot being trained by one of the AWTs greatest advocates.

And just one horse coming from South of Ashburton.

Yes, that is significant. They have never really latched onto the importance of Timaru being so central and able to attract horses from all over. If an AWT was so important why wasn't it built at Timaru? Its even in the provinces. I'm still bemused that there weren't more comments about the Provincial Growth Fund being used to fund a multi million dollar project in the middle of NZ's second biggest city.

What are the amenities like at Timaru as opposed to Riccarton,?

People in the know will know.

It actually makes my tiny brain hurt just to think how stupid an idea it is to have an AWT in the SI.
