Mardy
Just wondering how can a jockey ride at a certain weight mid week, then a few days later have to be taken of their mounts, yet was riding at the same weight a few days ago?. Is it as simple as not wasting enough or something else?. Definitely not having a go at the jock, just a bit uneducated on the subject. Special Agent
When in a constant state of wasting some weeks (and days) the kilo's are harder to shed than others, no matter what lengths you go to. Having said that, today's humans in general are somewhat softer than those of a generation or two ago. Particular jockeys of a bygone era would stop at nothing to make the weight for their race day charges, which I hasten to add were many kilograms lighter than any current impost.
Freda
Yes, I can recall tales of horrendous methods of weight loss, others not so horrible but still involving a helluva lot of effort. Now, most go to the sauna. The constant starving must be soul-destroying.
nod
Riders that are constantly having to reduce their weight should take up another vocation,. Their weakened state is a danger not only to other riders but to themselves. From my observations over the years most lack the will power to keep to a proper diet and the food on offer in the jockeys rooms does not assist. Fuckwit!....are you pissed, or just a naive turd.....that's fucking insulting to all of us that did whatever to stay light enough to do what we did.......fuck off. Special Agent
I can see both Joe's and Nod's points of view here. You actually sort of agree. It's amazing how a fast horse can find any missing will power.
KickintheKods
Just been out to get a huge bucket of popcorn. This could be the most entertaining thread for ages. Remember that old saying Joe 'Don't squat with your spurs on".
Joe Bloggs
I wonder what Garth Jackson would say should he read Nod's post?
Joe Bloggs
Just back from a surf, water 25degrees, air temp 28 already, and the huge Magic Millions polo and show jumping extravaganza is on today, crab/lobster and watercress sandwiches in the Marquee, wouldn't swap for quids, oh, yes I would, if only I could have been a natural lightweight and kept riding, instead of pissing blood due to the diuretic tabs prescribed by Dr Fitz Egmont JC Dr, to assist us in keeping our weight down........#fortheloveofthegame. #indefenceoffatjockeys
Special Agent
Garth is in Woodville and would possibly welcome the chance to chat. Ouch to the spurs in the kods!! But, today's spurs are toy ones and not permitted on the flat here now, another dumb decision in my eyes. One thing I'm getting out of these comments, and I'm ready to be screamed down, is the realisation that in addition to those in racing today being somewhat soft, they are also somewhat boring. It's the character and story telling that is missing. I'm sick to death of hearing how the race was won by all those at home. Yes I know it is a team effort and everyone has their part to play but, sometimes I would like a Mark Walker (for example) to accept the accolades for a job well done and not turn it into a rehearsed advert for the next lot of sales purchases. 2

Yep and he and Jane were both still riding work here 18 months ago. Didn't look too fat to me. Might have worked a few for Freda at Riccarton too for a couple of weeks. Shad
Brings back the memories of soundoration winning the nz cup, she was by sound reason and either Gant Davidson or Chris Johnson may have ridden her, Mr Jackson trained a few handy ones in his day. Yep Grant rode her for that win but Chris also won at least 3 on her. Wonder how his heel is healing and whether he'll be back. Special Agent
Samasaan won the Wellington Cup for Garth on a wet track. I'd say the 150th running might see identical conditions. Apparently there was talk at the races yesterday of a Wellington Cup relocation. Nothing would surprise any of us!!

It was always a bloody stupid idea to run the Marton Cup meeting at Trentham and expecting to race there for 4 Saturdays in a row , they have problems having ready for 3 days , if they do end up moving cup day Race need to be put to the sword , they are a shambles of an organisation . Myopic and narcissistic management . 1

Shad
The days when we had a few good stayers, the 2 miles these day only really hack races.

At Kumara the only horse he was able to ride was in the Nuggets with a carded weight of 61kg which means it carried 62kg with the 1kg allotted for the vest. Haven't watched that race for years but all the top chances with 2 mile form. Former Wellington and Melbourne Cup winner ran 5th. Genuinely run 3.23 on a slow track. No sign of any skirmishes or interference throughout. And not just balance from the riders but a great sense of timing and pace especially from the first few home. No hidings needed when horses were trying either. Don't think any of the place-getters turned their sticks over.
Special Agent
I thought the same about the whipping. It is actually a disgrace to see what has evolved from then up until recently. I wouldn't dare offer an opinion on what the causes of this are but, not that hard for anyone to deduce.
