NZ Standardbred Sales holding up well considering the economic climate.

I see the usual doom merchants are talking about "carnage'" and "bloodbaths"at the Standardbred Yearling Sales for 2023 (e.g. @JJ Flash).  The reality isn't all that bad.

The Auckland Sale was well up on median and average although the clearance rate was down about 4%.  Over 138 yearlings that is only 5 less sold and I'm sure the clearance rate will pick up as behind the scenes negotiations continue.

Many thanks Chief Stipe for the info. It certainly is a lot better than it looked watching the sales, and as you say those figures will improve.

Been watching both horse code sales for years and have learnt that viewing perception never meets reality.  Some naysayers are not up to speed with the process whereby a lot of negotiating continues after a horse is passed in.

Good to see that there are some good sales Chief, for the sake of the harness industry.

We do need this however for the average breeder at the moment there is absolutely no profit in breeding and selling with all the costs!

The ones paying the bigger money for the horses can afford it, but the average person that wants to buy a horse and race it, they are unable to.

The Stallion Service Fees for the top ones are ridiculously high for a bit of semen!!!!!!!!

Costs compared to what you can win in stakes nowadays are just so out of whack, and the chance of being on the positive side is virtually non existent!

You only have to look at the crowd at the sales venues, to see that you need to be past the retirement age to be owning, apart from several trainers buying for stable clients to syndicate!!

The only opportunity to own now for most is a small share in a syndicate and will it ever get better???

Some may not agree but Brodster telling it the way it is!

History shows Brodie nearly always on the money. No doubt will be here as well.

Brodie often calls it first. He was on the money when he predicted the TAB policies discouraging winning punters would have a very negative impact on turnovers.

Personally  i think thats one of the worst things happening to the industry. The TAB is run by people who have no idea of the consequences of what they do. Their lack of awareness of how they impact in a negative way the spend of some of their higher turnover tote punters is  hard to comprehend. I've explained how it works before. But when you have the number crunchers at the TAB slashing ff win odds when they take a $20 place bet, with as little as a $10 liabilty to the TAB,you can see how farcical it all is.

And if you don't have punters, that link in the chain is weakened and the strength of the whole chain diminishes. That ultimately effects stakes paid and numbers bred and so on.

When wasn't it like that?  The only difference today is there are less horses going around.

When did it ever offer a financial return?

You are correct Chief, so surely Service Fees are far to high in many cases?

I realise that breeders need to be optimists to be breeding but if harness wants to continue to be in operation, there needs to be more horses bred!

Reality is that harness racing breeding requires significant money be spent to get a yearling to the sales and often for no return!

As rime goes on, there are going to be fewer breeders prepared to take the risk and therefore less horses bred!

For the top bred horses there is profit in it providing the mare does the job, however the average mare it is not worth the time and money!

I just hope we can battle thru this to ensure racing continues
