Interesting, he was a versatile fella, they used to put the saddle on him quite often, think he finished his career with 61 wins, about 14 of them in nz.

Ya not wrong there, home of the mighty Durban chief, you'll never see another like him, I missed greymouth meeting, but attended reefton, great day out, big crowd, last time I went to kumara, got to the gate to see finish of first race, then they bought the helicopter in to dry the track, then we went home, that was the first of a few abandonments, since the upgrade to the track, many of the tracks that have been fiddled with, are the ones who are having the issues, sometimes things are best left alone, the 20$ entry I feel is steep,

Been crowds going there for many years, no sure it's the promotion, certainly the facilities there wouldn't attract the hordes, I think it's just they appeal of out in the middle of nowhere, one off race day, and the novelty or it all, better stakes and fields, best fields of the 3 day circuit,

Who out there is off to the Telegraph today....
Shad replied to TAB For Ever's topic in Galloping Chat
Oh the memories, remember Jonny alone won the jarden mile back in the eighties, at a big price, southlander knight invader finished 3rd from memory, Jonny was sired by the unfashionable blue vermillion, been some good horses grace the turf over the years, most of them some years ago. -
Central Otago Trots claim the Souths biggest crowd......

Has South Island become a dumping ground for 'poor' North horses ?
Shad replied to TAB For Ever's topic in Galloping Chat
They say change as good as a holiday, and I'm sure there worse places they could end up, the clubs be grateful of some numbers to fill their fields. -

Be interesting to see there turnover numbers, you'd think it would surpass the other holiday venues, if their numbers are correct, good on them, the country meets always popular this time of year, Greymouth gallops today they should get a good crowd with the weather they've been having. -
My only thoughts were bring back the racing there, the rest all over my head, very disappointing you'd think anything else.
-
Yep agree, went there myself many years ago, country racing at it's best.

Well Done Freda aka Pam - $20 FOB Winner in the first at Kurow!
Shad replied to Chief Stipe's topic in Galloping Chat
A jockey told my uncle that after a race, to which he replied, yeah a 10 acre paddock. -
Started the day as dead, funny as first day it was good, played fair today, winners hard to find for me, only horse I never backed up on the second day, after what a very poor run first day was Deirdre Franco, thought first day was to bad to be true, ultimate punishment for not sticking with her, the 32 divy I thought very poor given her recent form.
-
Track seemed ok, didn't look to be marking it when where I was watching in the stand, some didnt handle it, didn't get much rain yesterday.
-
Big fixed odds divvy up there by a gray trained horse, in a small field, wouldn't have minded some of that,
-
Yes, fields been poor previous couple of years, good to see some more numbers, good day out over there, and great grass track racing, tips anyone, hopefully I can find a roughie or two
-
Seemed like they gifted the race to the winner, just sat back and let him dictate terms, no one even game to have a look, was over a fair way from home I thought

Historic Racecourse to Come Alive - Equalisator Meeting
Shad replied to curious's topic in Galloping Chat
Certainly looks a great day out, track looked good, was it used as a tote venue at any stage, a blast from the past seeing and hearing Ian Chambers, remember many a year ago going to an equalizer meeting for the trots at murchison, they had a little all weather track from memory, be long gone now. -
Coroner declines to investigate tragic death of Megan Taylor
Shad replied to Thomass's topic in Galloping Chat
Been a few tragic deaths on that track, and one never forgets some of the fallen ones, many a year ago I think a young jockey Hunter Thomas lost his life, also Ray Hewinson, maybe both on jumpers, so sad for the families, and punters alike, one always pleased to watch a great days racing, where jockeys and horses, pull up unscathed. -
P Usually get a couple of coast horses go up for a run, to prepare them for the upcoming grass track circuit at xmas

Positive results for the Ready-to-Run Sale 2024.
Shad replied to Chief Stipe's topic in Galloping Chat
Deep pockets required, be interesting to see how it runs in the future, no guarantees. -
Yeah very good run, possibly a year to early for her, trainer always turns her horses out well, obviously had plenty of fitness on her side after a limited preparation racing wise.

Talking of kiwi, I took lostcause who carried the famous kiwi race colours, great effort for a 2 win house, was trapped 3 wide, cover did help, but still gutsy run within 5 lenghs fron winner, a horse worth following, certainly a few unlucky runners trapped wide.

Olde fashioned Canterbury Jockey Club stuck in the past
Shad replied to Thomass's topic in Galloping Chat
Nothing like watching the winter cup or the grand national in an exciting finish from the top tier of the old stand, oh the memories, ronganui, 3 winter cups from memory, Red Barron, and the year All Counted just about caused a major upset for the south, a few i remember, and there's plenty I've forgotten, real shame a big part of the history has gone, but alas these days the earthquake risk obviously very high, seemed to stand up ok to the ones they did have, or maybe I'm just stuck in my old school ways -
Olde fashioned Canterbury Jockey Club stuck in the past
Shad replied to Thomass's topic in Galloping Chat
Yeah was quite a disappointment, to be fair never has been my favorite track, just think it's sad from a general public side of things, that they seem to be un cated for, especially at the 30$ entry on top, obviously their not targeting the general public, even a portable stand, just something for abit of elevation, really only see the last 100m live, that's just my opinion, first time I've been there for a few years, I definitely think I'll be sticking to the smaller country tracks, that actually have a grandstand for viewing and the action is close by. -

Shad replied to Thomass's topic in Galloping Chat
I attended on Wednesday, but struggled to get any vision of the racing, bar from the big screen, which is not quite the same, so with the demolition of the old stands I struggled to get high enough to even see, unless there's a public stand that I don't know about, maybe there trying to encouragement more membership, the old grandstand site just full of tents these day, I enjoyed what I saw of the racing, but the 30$ entry plus 10$ race book, doesn't inspire me to attend anytime in the future, at least with the old stands you could get high enough to get a reasonable view with your binoculars. -
Kick it in the guts trev.
