I always say the racing is ruined by too many in a race. they start to get in each others way a fair bit more than normal. With Many horses chasing a start in these Big money races this Month, they decided to start 12 horses every race instead of our usual 10. it just causes issues. there's traffic jams. USA is way best with 8 runners all the time . They all get a chance every race. even from the back of the field. is hard to get held up. Gus was enormous . He was at the back from his unruly position and 12 lengths from the lead a lap out and beat just half head at the end. A sensational effort looping 4 wide from the quarter way up outside Oscar B. and beat him by 2 lengths at the end. the Longer races coming up next 2 weeks will be more his liking too. A fabulous trotter. I have a high opinion of his driver Pete's driving which differs to yours , but that's fine. it's just opinion. I looked up his season record and they put last 10 drives there too. Pete McMullen had 1 win and 4 second places in his last 10 drives so just average I spose. Grants last 10 drives were a win with Leap to Fame and 2 x 3rds . so seems quite average as well π€ . Races are VERY hard to win Mr Galah π . these 2 are our very best still. Have near 10,000 race WINS between them . incredible stuff. for this season Pete has 480 drives for 116 wins so not too bad at all so far . Usually has about 1500 drives per year for about 300 wins per year. and Grant Dixon has about 1000 drives per year for around 150-200 wins so not quite as good as Pete. Pete McMullen taking about half as 'outside' drives from his own horses too , and Grant hardly any at all.

STEP 1 Complete . Fate Awaits mugs em' nicely in the $300k Rising Sun Group 1. The Janitor a Brave 2nd with the Saver too , and a $30 Quinella in Da Bank . you can't help but win on these Top horses. Bring on Gus and Leap To Fame in 2 weeks time . could be the 2 Interdominion Champs then. Cheer em' On !!!

Ranga leads the field with his 10 points bonus scored tonight, but won't have that in next round . some Longer race Heats are on the cards for Next week. so some will be even further behind Leap To Fame than what they were tonight π Nearly all horses performed well but some might be traded next round that just are/were not up to it e.g like Eurokash and Majestic Lavros for Brodie and Mikey to get them a more competitive horse for next 2 weeks. Rangatira 43 Pacers + 18 trotters pts = 61 points The Galah 27 Pacers + 29 trotters pts = 56 points Chief Stipe 26 Pacers + 9 trotters = 35 points Brodster 24 Pacers + 9 trotters = 33 points Gamma 32 Pacers + 13 trotters = 45 points Mikey 18 Pacers + 10 trotters = 28 points TABman 24 Pacers + 27 trotters = 51 points LEAP To Fame 16 points Pacing and 16 trotting back to the swab box = 32 points

The EVOLUTION of HARNESS Racing . How we got where we are.
Gammalite replied to Gammalite's topic in Trotting Chat
Thanks for the great report TABman . yes have just viewed 'Mark and Nathan Purdon Racing' on Facebook , and someone is filming the guys daily at Ian Guerneys Brisbane place , working OscarB and Rubira. Has RUBIRA 100% spot on ready for tonight. Is excellent viewing and shows Mark working and washing the horse as Calm as can be. Mark is so relaxed and normal likeable bloke it is ridiculous. He is the Aussie Grant Dixon. Just so humble and great people. Horsemanship just 2nd nature to these greats. No wonder Natalie was attracted to both of them ! ππ. Thank you for letting us know about Brooke. Embarrassed I never heard of her before. She got a bit lost last night from the bad draw, and relying on someone to Carter her into the race from last in the running. That went no-where and just run her off the track in the end. Treacherous Baby No Luck so far , but the tide might turn. Amanda Turnbull could nearly of been one of the greats. Should of stuck to Menangle and got big owners , but went home to Bathurst to compete with her million relatives there mainly . there are that many Turnbulls it's ridiculous. Patriarch Tony Turnbull winning the Interdominion twice with Hondo Grattan back in the 70's. Amanda's main stable worker is a young QLD lass Isobel Ross ( has won 5 group 3 's to date is about her level) , and she is Donnie Ross grand-daughter. Don Ross was the Clerk of the course for well over 30 years and is a Queensland Racing Hall of Fame Inductee . Helped us out with that many horse issues on and off track , that EVeryone has a Story about him. Passed away at age 90 recently. RIP Don. near the best horseman going that didn't drive races. Here's the great man in action though , doing some training !! π₯° Early Queensland Harness racing days π€£π lucky we had some Evolution ππ -

π for sure. I think a lot of the horses that race all year QLD (or those regional centres) these days have to win 4 races PER Year to break even. possibly the same in NZ. Most can do it too here. as with the rating system the way it is pitting you against similar runners every week , you will win One in every 10 starts on average. The 10 horse fields says law of averages you will one out of every 10 starts. It's a numbers game . so you might start your horse 40 times in a year. (not uncommon in regional racing) and you'll win the 4 races ( and get 4 x 2nd , 4 x 3rds , 4 x 4th and so on. The prizemoney they raced for , seems to be calculated to cover a horses annual costs of training and racing, to fit that exact criteria , almost to the dollar. If they can get around the track 35-40 times per year lol. And we did enjoy the $550 at Rocklea back in the day too. Beers were only a dollar a pot in those days !! ππΊπ» you win ,you shout. Of course Metro horses on a Saturday night ( equal of your Friday night lights horses) can earn a LOT more and return a profit. They Go Like BLAZES though , and very hard to win in town (city) the millionaires horses are too good. They find that out for sure in New Zealand over the years too. (Allstars owners for example) Vicki Rasmussen leased old NZ er TURN IT UP off Mark Purdon about 5 years ago . He is your standard hard trying old horse and is in the Interdominion tomorrow too. He runs about 20 times per year and wins about 5 races and $100,000 annually. so Vicki doesn't really need any other horses to race ? when you have one like that earning your annual wages lol . He can still go close to 1.50 mile still an is amazing old horse. One of my Alltime favourites. Won an Auckland Cup once too . -

There is One already going. with TEAM Teal has been doing it for a few years now. Raising funds for Ovarian Cancer. They Needed to Put the Girls on a TELEVISION Ad . that's what would of worked. Could of got Huge exposure to a MASSIVE audience. someone should think of doing that one year. as it is the NZ and Aus lady drivers raised a lot money for the Ovarian campaign each year. QLD racing donating $200 for every lady driver win through a certain time of the year. HRNZ the same more than likelyπ I'm only defeatest by the thought of New people signing up for a go at training or driving. nothing to do with gender. Was just talking Experience. and used the Ladies I mentioned earlier, as an example of how tough it is to beat the Big stables. If they can't win , with their obvious ability at preparing runners, Then NO NEW Participant (male or female) is a hope in Buckleys of winning a race anytime there. so why bother trying lol. I mean you have some Great Horsepeople in the Deep South racing as well, so just as tough to win there if you tried to come in as new player. People in the Game for years struggle to get a winner there at times , with Williamsons dominating and that. Thankfully we have 'regional ' centres where Many participants (new or old) get a go and a win and/or Get several drives per week . Tamworth, Mildura , Redcliffe , etc race ALL the time. Back in my day new participants got a go. I had a baker, a boilmaker , even a carpenter mate all getting driver licenses on my horses and having a go for fun. No one bet on em' . we weren't worried about TAB turnover, we weren't crucifying the governing body like poor old HRNZ cops . when Rocklea Racing centre raced on Saturdays, me and Darryl Graham , the young Grant Dixon and mates were going around for $550 first prize . it was fun . people loved their horses, and looked after them. and anyone could have a go ( once they passed the stewards licensing requirements) Thats EXACTLY what NZ needs. Rock small stakes for slow horses and slow Participants. build from scratch. BTW We don't have the ' Many trainer Names' you have on your One stable training tickets. Just the one name on a Training Licence so Pete McMullen , the late Greg Sugars , Chris Alford, Robbie Morris , Clayton Tonkin and others all put the stable training name in their Partner/wife's name .Even Australia's best Luke McCarthy did this himself for many seasons, but Belinda now works on the Breeding side of their operation where they are standing KING of Swing , etc. so the horses are now All in Lukes name and he is the Interdominion Champion !! ( for 2 more weeks lolπ) The Lady drivers are here in Bulk in QLD and Pete Mcmullens and Grant Dixon's wives have very big drives tomorrow night . Chantal is even on 'The Janitor' in our Big Group 1 Rising star. Think Pete is driving the wrong one myself , but what do I know.π€π Natalie near the best driver i've seen . Her sister Kylie Rasmussen here was a gun too, but you didn't get to see her. -

you can't get any new participation Mr Galah. (unless you are family to good players already like the best new players on the track driving at least in Crystal, Carter, Housie and Orangeman son. for example) as they are just too good. Like wise you mention the female Participants. Over the recent years Trainers Nikki Chilcott, Ms Wigg, and Arna Donnelly have been going great guns really , but are just outside the Best stables of Telfers and Barry Purdon ( because they have mega rich owners ) so are Forced to the Back blocks of Waikato and that even though they tried hard with handy horses. they get carved up and horses lose form from chasing the Big Guns. It's just too tough. Sacred Mountain trotting for example , and Kango and Jolimont , and a few others . Arna has 3 'battlers' in tonight but even a classy horseperson like herself is struggling to get them over the line in First place. They just go to darn Hard and Fast ? . The Big stables have a HUGE advantage with the Big owners. Barry Purdon is in Dreamland with 17 horses of Dean Shannons, and the Stonewall bloke (forgot his name ) is just going NUTS with buying $300,000 plus yearlings this year, amount of horses racing, even doing big bets lately π€£, more horses and bets than Hot dinners that bloke. It is sort of the Same here Brissie with Mega-stables of 80 horses in each for Dixon and Pete McMullen. so they win nearly All the races for their Bands of 6 - 10 Millionaire owners. No 'small player ' anywhere near the money 2BHonest. small players are just forced to go to Redcliffe country racing twice per week to get a quid. So No New Players Mate. even the Dunn's have to struggle to get into feature Pacing races and win them even . And have a lot of staff and horses but luckily are very handy with TROTTERS like the HACKETT stables is in the North , to get a quid so you'll only get the Mark Purdon old stable Helpers of H CULLEN and R TODD as fairly New players, as they have experience with Mark and his Impressive history ,that know how to 'beat them up' in the Feature Races. Learning from the Grand Master. and are doing a Sterling job at it too as well π. -

What a great lot of horsepeople. Their Experience and List of Winners over the years enough to crush any New Players. Nathan Purdon Not making your list ππ€£. Treacherous Baby in tonight Not even with a single Win this year ?. Must of fallen off the truck too many times and lost form altogether like that . even got a Junior driver on it now lol. No wonder Nathan not on your 'Hit' list π. His dad might win In Brisvegas with Rubira and OscarB tomorrow though. a much better bet . Demon Blue was sold off to the Aussies as has done nothing this year racing at AKLD in 5 starts and just paddles around in Brisvegas now , ( bit of a let-down from his Group 1 placings in Nov just in behind Marketplace on 3 occasions) . You Better give Nathan a Rev-Up tonight TABman and tell him to pull his socks up a bit. π have a great evening !! -

Have enjoyed a quick reflection on the the development of the Sport as far as the Horse Speed is concerned. so hope you enjoy too and spend 3.50 minutes of your time to read. Sir John Walker pace lol π . Some great names are mentioned here , and you can see where and why the sport increased in Speed over the years. Have tried hard to give many Champions a plug here , so do hope you enjoy my Summary of Progression of the Mile Rate in our great Sport.π HERE you GO . Space> A long time ago when Roger Bannister ran the Athletic mile in under 4 minutes it was a huge deal. (in the 1950's) Then Sir John Walker from New Zealand put the country on the world Map being the First man to break 3.50 for the mile in the 1970's. ( WR is currently about 3.43 for a human mile) Like-wise a Standardbred Pacer has evolved at a similar rate over time going from 2.00 mins in the 50'60's to a fast 1.49-1.50 mile they run in the 2020's. These horses being about twice as quick as the best human athletes at that distance, generally . This Evolution for the horse came with switching from Handicap Standing Start racing in the early 80's , to High Ball sprint racing like USA always has/had from the mobile. New Zealand history littered with stars like Lordship, Jonny Globe ,Cardigan Bay, False Step ,Robin Dundee and others who often came off LONG Handicap marks like 48yards behind the front markers to win . So impressive these performances they became Household names. They were the early 2.00 min mile pioneers. Robin Dundee in Fact winning the Very first Miracle Mile ever run (Australia's Biggest race) in 1.59 in Sydney for NZ and Robert Cameron in 1967. But in the 1980's the 2 min horses had to Step it up a Notch. The NZ bred Champions VILLAGE KID ( first horse to win $$2 million in prizemoney Australasia) and Preux Chevalier were smashing out Interdominion Wins and Huge sequences of wins at a 1.55 rate. Village Kid winning the Interdominion in devastating effect 1986 in Brisbane clean Sweeping the Series , with no one getting near him. The Bar was raised to 'John Walker ' Level !! incredible. Could Anyone respond ? yes . Step up WESTBURN GRANT for Vic Frost around 1990. Blowing top quality fields away with huge winning margins. Even had 3 NZ starts that he won easily. 1990's saw some greats trying to copy the SPEED of Village Kid and Westburn Grant with a mix of Staying Prowess. to win the features. So Chokin, Holmes DG, Christian Cullen and Iraklis emerged from the ruck for NZ , to not only use their now 1.54 mile speed to win but could hold it over a mile and half , so became Superstars of the track. Can we beat these horses ? How could we do it ? Occasionally the Brilliant Staying Ability of NZ standing start horses would WIN the DAY. Our biggest staying race in Australia is the prestigious standing start long distance A G HUNTER CUP run at Melton, and has been won no less than 15 of the last 30 runnings by the NZ superstar 'STAYERS '. like Master Musician, Elsu, Blossom Lady, and Yulestar (plus about 10 others) . these horses with great NZ Cup and Interdominion records. STEP UP the early 2000's . A new type of horse. Solid tough as nail horses Like Monkey King , Blacks A Fake , Smokin Up, Sokyola dropping the mile rate from the 1.54 down to a now commonplace 1.52 for these Top horses in the TOP races. Just Incredible speed and staying ability , they often achieved racing 'Without cover ' . Extremely hard to beat. Now the 2010's Who could beat these Superstars. A new method ? yes !!! 1.52 horses that can Sprint fast the last bit as well . Here comes Im ThemightyQuinn and Christen Me , Beautide and LennyTheSHark. we now Have Interdominons and Miracle Miles going to this next Generation in 1.50 MileRates. Can anyone beat that ? yes !! up steps ALLSTARS with 20 devastating horses over a few years. Mark Purdon proving to be the Best trainer in the HISTORY of the Sport. headed by LAZARUS winning everything to be the BEST ever. His stable-mates Have Faith in Me and Smolda both winning the Miracle Mile in a sizzling 1.47.5. holy moly . that's just airborneπ. With the great man Mark semi -retired now , and partner in crime Natalie Rasmussen retired , the Aussies have caught up again ! . Leap To Fame and Don Hugo Smashing fields of horses like Pumpkins the past 2 years winning the last 2 Miracle Miles ( at 1.48.3 each rating ) and the last 2 Interdominion Grand Finals between them in World Class fashion. ** Tomorrow night in Brisbane LEAP To Fame and Don Hugo begin their Quest to be a double Interdominion Champion. No NZers will beat them this time round. maybe next year. They are the Current SuperStars of the Track , pushing for the 'Best Horse Ever' Title. ( but was great to mention the previous 27 Best horses ever in this article ) hope you enjoyed. -

What I meant was most Persons are more interested in their investments and race turnovers etc than the racing result from the owner/trainer or even horse prestige point of view. For example Brodie often posts along with many others the type of thing he literally just posted above this post. The horse has to be Certain odds for example to even get a little of BIT of Enjoyment from the racing. you and I watch a LOT of races without investment on them , Whereas MOST people won't . so we appreciate the tactics and racing more than them because we don't need 'money on' to achieve some enjoyment. just different perspectives of the action tiz all. . I have no problem that in a gambling industry that people worry about the gambling dollar. I don't . and often you get the feel that a Lot of folk Are not Recognising the Participants in a Post like that above ? . Can't be bothered and all this sort of thing π . His (and hers) perogatives , But it just seems a lack of Appreciation of the main Players in a way. This is not uncommon at all. It's a reason Harness racing is struggling to get a following. Hope that explanation Helps explain that view of appreciation a little better. well that's what happens I spose . for the Punter. a money making exercise. But there's still history and tradition and a living made by some, to be had as well, if you can dig beneath the almighty turned over Dollar . People are still making a living out of the sport and They (and I ) couldn't give a rats what the turnover is. They are presenting their pride and joy horse at the races . For as long as someone Is putting races on that is. race for $3000 a race if you're struggling then? . There's an easy solution. save you a 'buck' of importance. -

well had a bit of a dip here last week , posting 13 horses at BOAY Friday and Saturday for 8 wins, 3 seconds and 2 4ths . so a pretty savvy investor if having a go lol π. ( 2 of the second placings were beaten in close photo's too , and the other had to run 2nd anyway as was tipping the Quinella in that race with a toss-up. $9 Quinella in the end. Would rather be a Philanthropist like Kevin Seymour and give to the sport . or a Mick Boots with his support of a whole swag of trainers around the place with his many horse purchases to help keep them All in the game. Those boys being rewarded with racing Leap To Fame and Swayzee for their incredible efforts. Once people stop 'recognising ' the important participants , then it's ONLY a money making exercise from then on. and appreciation of the main Player (the horse) does drop significantly as seen on BOAY and everywhere really. And the investments ( and horses) are quickly forgotten once the 'Next' race comes along a few minutes later. A standard gap of 30 minutes is excellent , as that give punters a chance to invest every 15 minutes (if following 2 meetings, and the Participating drivers/owners/jockeys/ trainers a chance to catch their breathe between races and talk about prospects and results with out the sprinting about to prepare the next runner without even time for a drink. A standard Familiar date for racing as well , so Punters can adopt routine. Friday night Lights has been excellent for that so NZ is showing real progress in some areas like that. (Saturday night would be best but not possible you say) -
With the talk on the threads being of the Interdominion , declining betting and Fast tracks and horses. Here are the TOP Five BEST horses I've ever seen ( even ahead of Blacks A Fake ) as they would All beat him up as well. To decide for yourself I'll put the 5 photos up. They All won the Interdominion from being so Good. They all set National Marks . ( Akuta only just missed out) These FIVE are ALL by BETTOR's DELIGHT and look like Stud Stallions while racing . And are the Strongest EVER to hit the tracks of NZ and Aus. I'm Glad I lived long enough to see these Big BAD boys go . A true delight to see these Magnificent Beasts. ππ here they are >>

Here's some Fair dinkum points to add to the list . No Participants = No racing at all.... should be the main point. The Gambling dollar on harness racing is SMALL compared to gallops, casinos, lotteries, pokies , even bloody scratches. There's 'no way known' you are going to 'Lure ' new outsiders. It'll be just the Stonewall bloke, and a few big-time owners like him having any of the Big bets, that are already involved in the industry. I would say all the old Stalwarts at BOAY even bet LESS than they used to, and we all Love the Product. and don't think the FAST tracks are the MAIN Player here . The fact is we have the BEST HORSEMEN on the Planet Still competing and winning . Mark Purdon , and brother Barry and the Williamsons and Butchers , and Dixons and McMullens and McCarthy's and Hall's . + Emma Stewart. So we are getting the FASTEST and BEST horses ever seen. Does this make the racing Worse ???????? Well the tote prices are quite short I spose ( Personally I never worry about the odds but most do) with FIVE of the Most Magnificent Majestic Creatures Ever to put a bridle on Winning the Interdominion over the past 10 years . no wonder the odds are short . ( i'll put some photos on their own thread ) -
Can spot El Venceodor on your great chart here 3 times. So looks a shoe-in for NZ Horse of the Year. so question answered. Thanks for that ππ wonder if Willydoit and Savaglee can come back ok as 4 year olds. Orchestral seemed to just battle in the end.
-
Who is it Doomed ? (please excuse my ignorance as don't see them NZers go round as much on tele here in QLD) I thought Orchestral for a moment as she seems to have had a very mild season. and I remembered her getting well beat in the Empire Rose in the Spring. so looked her up and she Just had the One win for the season. But it's not her you speak of anyway, as she (Orchestral) is 4 year old now anyway π. so I'm a whole year out of form lol. Orchestral didn't really go on with it that well after her good 3 year old winning year for some reason π€.
-
Great 3 yearold year for TreasureThe Moment , near undefeated (8 wins, 1 x 2nd from 9 ) and with 3 Group 1's victories including the Blue Riband > ATC and Vic Oaks double. just a superstar horse . Mr Zhang may be riding the wave of Success with his mare Via Sistina, but wow ! doesn't he have a great back up in this 'treasure' as well ? . TreasureThe Moment could go on to be the next 'Verry Elleegant' I reckon . ππ That great kiwi mare won a Melbourne Cup and 11 Group 1's , so is a 'High Bar' to get too though lol . π but that 'Yu Long' bloke is a bit blessed with lucky 8 Chinese fortune so Just might pull it off in future months.
-
Of course. Horses birthday for thoroughbreds is 1st August . Season isn't finished yet π€£. i'm getting too far ahead of myself with it just turning July now. bloody slow Winter π just wishing it was over. anyway I guess the NZ Horse of Year Nominations Will go in shortly. who wins now Imperatriz retired . The Standardbreds changed to January 1st for the annual Birthday only about 2 -3 years ago. ( to allign with Oz ) A Brilliant Move . You no longer have to rush your 2 year-old . And they can start later in the year in the late Spring Summer , in the great weather , while Big and strong and about to turn three. best innovation for years. and run the NZ Derby in December when the 3 year olds are even bigger and stronger. (and are about to turn 4 a month later and can even take on older horses in races, to make the racing even better)
