Craig Grylls and Robbie Patterson ...well done , Yes Indeed !

Recommended Posts

Great effort by these two to nab the two most of the most Iconic races on same day !

Craig Grylls now has 3 x Wellington Cups ...Graphic [2400m] and Lincoln King. And carries on a great family tradition.

His dad Gary won the Cup on Oarsman in 1985....a very good rider too !

Grand dad JF [ John] Grylls won the Auckland Cup on Kia Maia in 1960's and I think Gary did likewise.

As for Thorndon ,I think Tara's Pride from Taranaki won that for JFG.

So all 3 have quite a collection of big wins.

Definitely all three have won the Easter Handicap which early on was the main Group 1 mile in NZ , Craig on Pasta Post in 2008 when only 15 years old.

Top family of people as well !

And  Craig Grylls closing in on the top 'two mile' Cups jockey Bob Skelton.

RJS won 5 x Wellington Cups on 3 x horses  , numerous other 2 milers including the Melbourne Cup.

His brother WDS did similar while another brother Frank won NZ cup on showy chestnut Royal Bid. Another brother Errol trained Rose Mellay to win Auckland Cup from memory while Max [ MJ] the baby robably got close too , I saw him at Riccarton races recently.

See people still go to the races these days !

The top Wellington Cup trainer with 4 x wins is Mike Moroney who I note won 2 x races at Flemington yesterday.

Mark Walker also got one at Flemington ,and another Wellington Cup winner Donna Logan won in Singapore !

Another great memory popped up when Humbucker won the Gore Cup carrying the colours of Hazlett /Hillis...white jacket ,green sleeves ,yellow cap who won Wellington Cup with Eiffel Tower and a ton of big jumps races there.

And BJ Anderton still winning races at Gore...he featured in many Cups and features ,along with his family...Princess Mellay ,Trelay , Powley ,Mellseur, Kumai along with their many sires runners ...Mellay, Trelay , Noble Bijou ,Personal Escort et al.

Oh the memories........  The magic of Trentham was created because the best horses and trainers came from all over...North  ,Central and South ...often the only time they clashed.

It was that that made it the top betting [ gallops ]  meeting in NZ .

It should hold on to that cos it was a long way ahead mostly , especially since ARC carnival split into 2 or 3 !

It should still head off the West Coast !

I think you will find that Craig was 17 when he won on Pasta Post.

Oarsmen there's a memory royally bred on its sires side, can you remember what he was by, without looking it up, sire was poor on the track and off it despite his breeding, but there a story to it but not sure how true it was, but sounded plausible.

Some great news too.

They Broadcast those 2 Races at Trentham on Free To Air  National TV Channel 7 Australia .

The coverage was excellent and gave great exposure to Nz Racing . (to Aus audience)

First time ever seen Nz races live on TV like that. shows the product must be very good and the nations are working well togeather to Promote Racing.

and give Punters a good 'Group racing 'option to bet on with nice tough horses.

By The Son (Dennis breed) who only sired approx 50 foals all-up. The Son's dam (The Twinkle) was an outstanding racemare but a flop at stud yet her full sister, The Fantasy left the multiple group 1 winners, The Phantom and The Phantom Chance.

Then I must have been at the wrong Parish, all I saw was burnt vegetation one side of the altar and a quagmire the other with horses coming down the straight like brown's cows... in January FFS.

I've been spoiled though, flying into and landing centre track at Trentham in beautiful Wellington weather, shaking hands with old friends and dignitaries, then witnessing great gallopers fighting out the finish of time honoured races... on good ground... hard up against inside rail... and running track records to boot!

Small mercies.

Yes you are right,The Son disappointing on both fronts, someone told me at the end of his racing career he was found to have a foreign object lodged in his body, some wire or something similar, not sure how true this story was, may have made a difference to his racing career but not his stud one, very disappointing on both counts, certainly one of the best ever bred horses, did sire oarsmen, not much else

Bonecrusher was a 'fluke' just like most of the real champion performers in TB Racing.

Everything is a fluke, unless its bred by a big stud, with a commercial stallion(what they deem commercial) a commercial mare(what they deem commercial) and the right owners you should know that by now!

Eight Carat produced a dynasty of flukes.

The majority of champion performers are well bred.  There are exceptions but I don't know anyone who specialises in breeding duds by duds from duds.

As alluded to...all horses are ...'well bred'.

My statement stands....'most champion performers are 'flukes'.Disprove it if you can.

Eight Carat was as slow as the 2nd coming, never won a race.

How are the progeny of Sunline,Black Caviar etc,etc...going?

But you're more likely to get a champion if you breed with champions.

Eight Carat may have been slow on the track but she was quite well bred and nicked with Sir Tristram and Zabeel.  Her dynasty is immense and still influential.

What champion  progeny  of a Champion Stallion bred to a Champion mare can you provide to back up your position?🐴
