Why? And how would changing hands help?

Two strikes inside the 200 and clearly on the rump. Try specsavers! The horse is still learning. She's trying to teach it to get to the line, what the whip means, and to make sure she got something out of the gallop when there was nothing to push her which there may be next time.

I see Wynn didn't hit her with the padded bit even though the angle doesn't actually show very well where she hit.

Something not quite right with the time in the Guineas.  They ran home the last 800m in 47.  Which isn't that quick.  That means the first 600m was run in 35 and a tick.  So essentially Pivotal Ten ran even near 12's for the race.

Why was the Southland Guineas dropped back to 1400m from 1600m this year?

Southland and Wingatui have swapped this year. Last year Otago went first with a 1,500m guineas followed by Southland at 1,600m. This year Southland 1,400m followed by Otago at 1,600m.

Enormous amounts of money have been poured into the Otago meeting. I just hope it doesn't rain on the day.

Terry Kennedy said when interviewed at Invers that they are expecting 10000+ on course!

Already has.  The Southland Guineas winner is heading to Wellington!

Seriously? Not sure I'd want to be there if there are 10,000.

yip!  I think there is plenty of strong cool aid being drunk :)

I presume that they must be confident of getting a lot of students along??

Best of luck to them.  Whether over-subsidised ( as Doomed comments ) or not,  the South needs to be able to put on a decent show.

A good track, has always suited good horses.

Is the horse a slow learner?  Whipped in its previous 3 races - not tapped.  You sure like these training aids @curious.

Here is Steve Hunt's Analysis of the Southland Guineas:

Pivotal Ten landed on a 97 rating. The clock backed up the visual, great sustained speed. The last 200m sectionals, Pivotal Ten was very slow at the end, but more than understandable given the prior speed she showed. That doesn't detract from the performance or rating, but more so offers an indicator that she will need to be rated a little more efficiently if she's a chance to run 1500m near that rating level. If a little slow into stride like her last two and she's then revved up to find a position somewhere up near the lead, that can make it a little more difficult to switch off and relax well enough to run a strong 1500m. At the same time, I'd be snapping her up if I had a Kiwi slot yet to be filled.

@curious are you able to lost the extensive research showing the flank is significantly more sensitive than the rest of a horses body?

Or is it all based on anecdotal observational reports from trainers?

At the rodeo sort of proves it Chief.  they get frightened easily with anything touching them around the flank area.

They use the flank rope to get those Bronco's Bucking , yet you can tighten a girth strap and horse doesn't care.

You've worked with horses plenty and know the flank is a very sensitive area? you're being quite 'Insensitive' if you can't recognise that obvious fact lol 😆 🤣 ..there a bit of thinner tissue between the hind quarter and Abdomen.

Ears are another quite sensitive spot. some of the sensitive buggers hate having the earplugs jammed in. there's a bit of technique to it.

Well I guess this is the litmus test for racing at Wingatui regarding crowd numbers, good racing, hopefully good weather, how many actually go, that remains to be seen.

Sounds like we'll find out on March 8th if it worked.

And yes, I'm big on whips as a training aid. Always carry one myself.

I don't think it is up to that level based on its performances to date.  I would have liked to have seen a decent sectional fron it.

Time will tell if the horse is of the quality required.  One thing, it is in form.  Brendan Lindsay said in an interview that the slot race is exciting because the winner could come from Hokitika so, if the Wynne/Wightman charge makes the field and performs well it should be the dream result for everyone involved.

You don't think 1.21.7 on the bridle is a pretty good sectional for 1400 round Ascot Park??

That's the total race time.  What has been its quickest sectional in any race?  Including that one.

As for being "on the bridle" it was slowing down and had to be whipped twice to be "ridden through the line".  They weren't taps or for "training purposes".

Hyperbole at its worst.  I guess Brendan doesn't know the Hokitika track was closed down 6 years ago or that the Hokitika beach is unsuitable for training on.

Maybe he meant the winning slot holder.  Who knows?  It seems a lot of hype that will benefit a few.  When Entain fizzles out I can only see it being the survival of the energetic clubs with money making ideas and not too many wages to pay.

A club has no future if there are no Owners or Trainers.
