Enough is enough surely

SMEDLEY (D Danis) – Trainer C Stevenson was advised that a warning would be placed against the gelding and would be expected to be more competitive.

11 years old stone motherless last in four of its 5 last starts and 20 leghts behind the second last horse on Saturday in  a rating 65 race and its had 119 starts .  it would not be expected to be more competitive but the trainer should be warned not to be so cruel and expected to retire the poor old horse.

I remember a horse called Alwick ordered retired,  many years ago.  I can't tell you how many 'uncompetitive' runs it had had,  but eventually,  enough WAS enough.

Do the stipes think that this level of performance is attracting bettors...?   or racing fans..?

I feel sorry for Smedley as mentioned BUT the ARC should be making a presentation to this horse ..he's had over 40 starts at Ellerslie and won a Cornwall Hcp, for goodness; sake ...a DSM is in order!!

start number 38 coming up at Ruakaka this weekend.  from here the  nZ cup is his race I reckon.

from the Stipes Report

Race 8 AJC.Co.NZ 2100 SMEDLEY (L Satherley) – Underwent a pre race veterinary inspection and was passed fit to race with no apparent abnormalities detected. Commenced to give ground from near the 800 metres and was not persevered with finishing a distant last. Underwent a post race veterinary inspection which could detect no obvious abnormality. Trainer C Stevenson was advised that SMEDLEY would be expected to be more competitive and is now required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to racing next.

To put of balance in to this.I was at the races yesterday and overheard the discussion between the parties.I noticed the horse was vetted pre and post race with no issues,i had a good look at the horse and in my option the horse looked in great condition and looked like a happy horse after the race.I spoke to the trainer and i can tell you he has genuine love for his horse and went on to say the last thing he would want would be for something to go wrong with him on raceday,he further added, even though the horse is a natural at jumping,he couldn't allow himself to be entered for a jumping race in case he fell in a race.He added that he just wanted to finish on his terms not officialdom terms,so he has accepted the decision and i can tell you this horse will be given the retirement he deserves and will be an asset for the young horses he will help  educate.

I think George was making a point in his commentary.  11 years old .  more starts that the rest of the field combined.  tailed off. again.

im sure th trainer loves the horse but retired him before he was told to which muct have been about to happen after yesterday.    The horse desirves a wonderful home and mug punters deserve not to wast another dollar each way on him ever again.

Great & all well and good, but its a dreadful look for the sport to have an uncompetitive horse consistently going around. 2 or 3 runs is fine but the amount he had before the plug was pulled was 3-4 runs too many.
