It was when it was taken out of Club hands and the Track Managers (formerly caretakers) had to dance to the tune of the NZTR Track Head Honcho whose name escapes me that the shit hit the fan more often Curious

Yeah...Reefton will recall when they were advised to put x amount of water on a firmish Reefton track by the said gentleman.

The local specialist ( farmer) flatly refused, that is a waste of time he said and it will only make things worse.

The day went ahead without incident.

Don't worry about reporting track conditions , how about they get the gates in the right starting position , Ash r3 , they obviously need to get a bigger 1200mtr marker . Keystone cops .

The marker post appeared to be trying to hide in the hedge.  Still visible, though.

Wonder who [ finally ] noticed that the gates were misplaced?

My guess is not one of the starters or gates team , it would be funny if not so sad at the incompetence .

Why would you NOT allow them to gallop?

You are allowed to on OZ tracks - quite a few horses have galloped on Flemington this week. Farnan for one.  Basically a familiarisation exercise for the horse.

Wouldn't it be a LOWER ACT to not allow?  Or is that all about giving the local team an advantage?

Of course you could confine the gallops to those horses entered for the Saturday.

What? I never heard of horses being allowed to gallop on the course proper at Riccarton though I've been MIA for a while and may have missed something. They don't even run jumpouts or trials on it do they? And if they allow it why only on Tues/Thurs/Sat? That may not suit some horses' preps. Freda may be able to advise.

I detect some sarcasm in that post if I'm not mistaken.....

They do run jumpouts, yes...and there is a trial meeting  scheduled in December.

Years ago - and I mean years - anyone was allowed to gallop on the course proper, by arrangement, and with the payment of one guinea [ I think, may have been a pound. ]

More recently, we have been allowed to have normal gallops on the course when prevailing conditions make it necessary, and trainers with horses engaged in prestige races have been allowed as well.

On occasion, the course wilI  be open for the Saturday's runners only.    I do recall  Ellerslie engaged runners being sent round reverse way, may have  been Peter Williams?  and I'm fairly sure Pitty has more recently had runners engaged in the north allowed as well.  He will be able to confirm.

Given that decimal currency was introduced in July 1967, you are right, that is a few years ago. I may have still been in nappies.

Jumpouts are held monthly up the back straight, wide out, about 500m. Horses must be pulled up before the bend.

OK. So really more of a practice gate exercise. Not official jumpouts like say at Levin run over various set distances from 600-1200m on the rail with published results etc?

we were doing that at Flemington 40 years ago. many winners came out of those, bookmakers cried and their wives wept, life was grand then.

Still happens here. Not sure about the wives though.
