Coronavirus: Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf says coronavirus approach 'has failed'

Published
17 December 2020

Sweden's king has said his country "failed" to save lives with its relatively relaxed approach to the coronavirus pandemic.

Sweden, which has never imposed a full lockdown, has seen nearly 350,000 cases and more than 7,800 deaths - a lot more than its Scandinavian neighbours.

Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said he agreed with the king's remarks.

"Of course the fact that so many have died can't be considered as anything other than a failure," Mr Lofven told reporters.

Referring to the government's strategy, Mr Lofven added that "it's when we are through the pandemic that the real conclusions can be drawn".

In the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Swedish national response continues to be an outlier with cases and deaths increasing more rapidly than in its Nordic neighbours.1,2 On Dec 20, 2020, COVID-19 deaths in Sweden had reached more than 80003 or 787 deaths per 1 million population, which is 4·5 to ten times higher than its neighbours.1

The source for this quote?

The "neighbours" had worse flu seasons than Sweden in 2019.  Displaced mortality accounts for some of the differences.  Another reason is that most comparisons don't smooth for each countries demographics.  Contrary to what a superficial view might lead you to think the demographics of Sweden is quite different to its Nordic neighbours.

However that aside the point I was making, which doesn't align with your biased narrative, is that Sweden followed the pre-Covid-19 agreed pandemic plan which was based on a consensus of nations including WHO.  The outcome?  No different than those who followed more stringent lockdown policies e.g. the UK.

The UK has experienced their worst economic contraction since "The Great Frost" of 1709 with a -9.9% reduction in GDP.  Sweden had a contraction of -2.8% or a 350% difference.  What's more where many many UK businesses have gone bust Sweden's have continued to operate and survive.

But you haven't provided a link to the article or research paper that you have quoted.  The references are pointless as they have no context.  Aside from that I see one is from Time Magazine - a really esteemed medical journal.  Most of the others are references to raw data sources.  So what?

Quoting an aged doddery old monarch and a political figurehead are hardly "good science".

If you were to guesstimate a % , what first world countries have not implemented a similiar approach to nz based on WHO reccomendations? gonna blame cindy for executing it more successfully?

You really are out of your depth on this subject.  WHO did NOT recommend the strategy NZ took.  They said, and they still say, that Lockdowns and isolating a country do more harm than good.

It is going to be interesting watching Cindy (didn't you know she hate being called that?) spin our escape from this BS and reintroduction back into the world especially when the world will have taken their pain and moved on.  How many Covid-19 deaths will be acceptable?  50?  100? or 700 just like the flu each year?

Sweden for one is going to have a great summer - watch this space!

So what she has references for her facts based on data! Or are we putting on the Bill Gates conspiracy theory tinfoil hat?

NO no no!  You are out of your depth because you have made an assumption about WHO's recommended response and Global strategy that is wrong.  THEY DID NOT SAY OR RECOMMEND WHAT CINDY DID!  Do you understand?

I don't need qualifications or expertise to read and remember what WHO actually said.
