I would suggest next time you start a thread you actually spell the persons concerned name right. I have no idea whether you have been referring to shaun phelan,or shaun fannin. To be honest i don't really care either, but i'm just pointing out its a bit confusing.

Thomarse writes in this pidgin English only on this forum.  He thinks it is humouress when in actual fact it is plain ignorant and in a way it is a form of racial stereotyping.

But he his too thick to see his own hypocrisy.

Totally untrue

Our society is at a crucial stage of righting the total wrongs of the past wrt racial harmony...

Feelin feeling good about himself being superior and white and "Maori lazy" was a DISGRACEFUL RACIAL SLUR

The type of BULLSHIT that sets back racial relations for decades

And all the Racing Industry did was label it MISCONDUCT

I call BULLSHIT on that as well

Those of us in the real world, unlike your virtual reality, are somewhat more tolerant and probably more awake than your token PC BS self.

I guess you identity as a minority and to feel part of bigger crowd sign up to every minority cause you can.

Meanwhile the rest of us get on.

Seriously, you need help mate.

I believe the vast majority of genuine hard working Kiwis would think his comments were genuinely light hearted, said in a manner that was not meant to be offensive and taken as such by MOST of those who heard them, including me.

You, on the other hand, have snapped, in an immature and petulant manner, as has those silly people who issued the fine.

Context, intent and delivery don't matter anymore.  But Thomarse feels he needs to continually apologise for being a white stale male living in Auckland.  Siding with minorities gives him a sense of belonging.

I remember the days, I am guessing around six to seven years ago, when Thomarse was in his prime, writing daily on the racing forum websites.

He was actually fun to read, especially extolling the virtues of his daily coffees at the Kohi cafe and his conquests from pickups at the nearby beach.

I think he had a Mexican boyfriend back then, who he had met on the gay dating site, Scratch My Back.

I really enjoyed his contributions. His was an insight into a part of Auckland I would never have known otherwise.

Something has obviously happened to the dear man since those days.

I miss the old Thomarse.

I was State housed raised in a large family with my Father working long hours in 2 jobs to manage that family...a hard working family...so too we're the local Maori families

...in those days it was a mixed European/Maori population and we all got on famously in the community...

However looking back now we were obviously privileged compared to Maori

...their past included having the bejesus knocked out of them if they spoke Te Reo...didn't receive the same Mortgage considerations when applying...an intergenerational wealth deprivation which continues to this day of course...

...among many others...just educate yourself for a change....

...and unbelievably to this day the smug superiority of GORMLESS DICKHEADS such as Shorn perpetuating the DISGUSTING myth that because he's white...

...he works harder....

Of course it wasn't a "throwaway line"..the punchline had to include 'they're lazy' added on

It made Shorn feelin better about himself with his superior white mates telling him this morning how hard done by he was and "good on you for telling the truth"

The Racing Industry here is full of this type of Bullshit though...unsophisticated, uneducated GORMLESS MORONS such as Shorn Feelin good about himself

Ask George Simon about the barriers he encountered when the 'Maori Boy' had the gall to think he was good enough to participate in anything more than a mucking out job...

When Simon grabs Gormless Shorn by his smalls when he next sees him..he'd be doing us all a favour that the Moron's mea culpa includes an intensive 5 day stopover at the local Marae...

...Gormless Shorn will be as white as snow and his nobbly knees will be shaking...but who the fuck cares?

You sound like perfect dumb White Wokey Ardernite, lives in Auckland in lefty la la land. Most likely on some lefty gravy train or fall into other area, thick, broke and vote Labour all you're life. No matter how bad things get or how badly they pull wool over you're we eyes. Better identify as Maori, for we hand out might need it.

Looks like Thomarse got through to Stuff!

Racially disparaging comment about Māori in relation to occasionally slow race horse earns trainer $800 fine

Marty Sharpe

A horse trainer who referred made racially disparaging comments referring to his sometimes-slow horse has been fined $800.

Shaun Phelan, who co-trains the horse BIG MIKE with his father Craig, admitted making an inappropriate comment of a racist nature when being interviewed live on Trackside TV on July 3.

The remark was made when Phelan was interviewed before Race 5 at the Hawke’s Bay racecourse.

In the interview he said:

“Yea, as long as the track today is on that better side of slow, if it’s not the holding side -the only worry the big boy can’t get his feet. When he can’t get his feet out of the ground he just, he’s got a bit of Māori in him and doesn’t feel like having a go….”

The matter was heard by the Racing Integrity Board the same day.

In a recently released decision, the board said Phelan “agreed completely that what he said was inappropriate adding that he is himself part-Maori”.

“The interview took place in the jockeys’ room while he was getting ready for the race, and in that situation he said “you tend to forget that phone interviews are going live on TV”,” the board said.

The board said Phelan had a clear record in regard to the misconduct rule. He had been an apprentice rider and had held a jumps licence for many years. More recently he had become a licensed trainer out of Cambridge in partnership with his father.

“This incident was out of character for him,” the board said.

Chief stipendiary steward John Oatham said he knew of no other similar cases. The closest was a jockey who had been suspended for two days for making a racial comment to a fellow rider.

Oatham said the stewards did not condone anything of a racial nature in racing and said a fine of not less than $1000 would be appropriate.

The board’s ruling noted that Phelan said the penalty had to be such that neither he nor anyone else in the racing industry made the same mistake in the future.

“It was a wakeup call for him to be more careful and to remember that everything can be recorded. It was not a good look for him or his business,” it said.

“The comments made by Mr Phelan on live television were insensitive, inappropriate and thoughtless. Not only has this reflected poorly on him, but also on the racing industry in general,” the ruling said.

The board said Phelan instantly recognised his comments were racially offensive and unacceptable. He was contrite, did not attempt to downplay his comments, and accepted that he must be held to account.

He was fined $800.

The board said that if Phelan had failed to recognise or understand the gravity of his comments the fine would have been greater.

When will trainers, jockeys, owners wake up, just don't do interviews. They obviously didn't take on board what happened to Mr Myers. On one hand you have trackside running around with there talking heads trying to interview participants, and then using their footage to have them fined. Seems clear to me, don't do interviews.

So many now days take it upon themselves to get offended on someone elses behalf. All that does is ultimately take away the seriousness of an actual or real racial slur,a  bit like the girl that always called fire.

I had that a couple of years ago when i was interviewing someone for a position in the company is was in at that time. He was a big man with a big stomach, and we had recently had comments from clients that another employee of similar build was unintentionally exposing parts of his bum when that employee bent over, with bending being necessary when doing part of one task. So i pointed out in a diplomatic way in the interview that we expected all employees to be dressed to ensure they didn't expose parts of the body when bending over.Well, while in no way was the new employee offended, the woman who had done the interview with me whom i had recently been a little dissatisfied with some aspects of her job performance, complained that i had made a derogatory comment about the new applicants  physical appearance. Of course they asked the applicant and he advised that he had not felt that at all and was unsure what part of the interview was being referred to.

So the point i make is,people like thomas are always on the lookout for comments and situations that can be used for their own purposes. They hijack an issue, think they may be doing some good where in fact they only cause resentment and further division where none actually existed. They manipulate the situation to somehow in their minds think they have taken the moral high ground, but in fact they only end up looking unhappy and a little bitter for reasons that people can only guess. So many people who do this are also the biggest hypocrites. But thats the world political and media groups have created.

Its a bit like my wife used to watch one of the usa housewifes programmes. But she told me last night she had given up watching it as all it seemed to be about this season, was a new housewife who had been brought on the show, and all she went on about was the white privelegde of the other housewifes, who all just sat there and agreed,i guess so as to look politically correct. All rather pathetic.

Soz I didn't get back to you kods...

....butt I've been wiping my ass with your crap...finally run out

Im truely shocked though...

htf has this RACIST 'SOH' of Gormless thuck az two planks Shorn not worn out yet?

It was @ 30/40 years ago and hackneyed then...used in pubs and private convo's with fellow RACISTS who attempted to keep other races down..while feeling superior

Even then it was COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE to inform a serious television audience that another racial group was...

"LAZY"

How thick are you and your other hackneyed old purveyors of 70's humour to be still enjoying the same old racist crap then....

...and still think there's nothing wrong with airing this on national television?

Gormless thuck az two planks Shorn had no excuse...because that's what Gormless do

You've got no excuse

That's right Hew...

Ive been busy spreading the news to media outlets and let the Broadcasting Standards Tribe know that Trackside needs to apologise for any offence taken...

Some of my beloved family identify as Maori so I did it for them...

Having to explain to children, who also heard this broadcast, that they're not lazy because they're Maori is frankly beyond the pale...

...they didn't find it funny and nor should they

He thinks by 'working hard' he won't be labelled Maori  and "lazy"

But this Gormless guy has thuck az 2 planks form...

He was "severely reprimanded" for spraying his former partner during a race a few years back after he broke up with her...

What with who knows....but it'd be Gormless stuff
