Races were televised but the commentator was late arriving on course and a North Island commentator covered the first race from afar. The Young Runaway also won a maiden and an ounce of gold at Reefton, the gold is now worth as much, if not more than the winning stakes. Won't see those days again. Cheers Bill for the great photos of the gold, the old boy wasn't to far out with his story, nice old fella he is, an awesome momento of those wins back in the day, priceless to be fair, find your thoughts on rangiora track very informative, since you have ridden on it many a time, I can't claim to have done that, but very much did enjoy a days punting out there a while ago, at least they trial there, and trots use it occasionall, who knows what the future holds. Thanks again for the photos. nomates
1.22.59 for the 1200 in the second race , they will be looking to race all flat races on the A/W next national meeting . Some tough horses running today for the 3rd time at the carnival , memories of another time .
Freda
Tough indeed. While not wishing to cast aspersions upon the decisions of others, I struggle to understand why, when a horse clearly hasn't handled the going, you would then ask it to try and do so again? It is a fact that every wet track is different, fair enough - and some will handle one day what they can't the next. But in this context, the ground was so deep, rough [ full of holes ] and holding, that it wasn't going to markedly improve within two days, whatever the weather. Rain on the last day certainly 'loosened' things up a bit, but only to the point where it resembled the Wednesday more than it otherwise would have done without the rain. I can recall about fifty Nationals, I don't think I have ever seen the ground so bad. On another note, the AWT is now in use, and the reports are all very positive.

Any chance they can xfer the Oamaru meeting to the A/W and get some more nom's for the meeting on Friday . Who thought it was a good idea to have a southern meeting 6 days after the Grand National meeting ? The buzzword is dickheads .
Freda
God knows. I do recall a late August Oamaru with jumping, but the John Grigg Stakes meeting in early September was the start of the spring programme for most. Certainly, in those times, Riccarton was not raced upon again until Cup meeting. Geraldine, Gore ( Guineas ) , Blenheim, Rangiora and Motukarara all had their place in the leadup to November. Good thing the connections of Pearl Davone (beaten 15L 1st Day, last), Goodanya (10L last), Rosie Glow (24L 6 of 8 didn't have the same thought Edited August 17, 2021 by Pitman

Seems to me Oamaru and Timaru seem to get the poor rub of the green, last year they had Riccarton 2 weeks apart and Wingatui and Gore on the alternate weeks, seem to go ok, Edited August 17, 2021 by mikeynz

Theoretically of course, under tiered racing the horses who race for $27,500+ at a Riccarton feature meeting should be a totally different pool of horses to those who are waiting to race for $10,000 and $11,000 at Oamaru. Isn't that how tiered racing works? I can't imagine the Aussies saying Casterton can't race one week because Flemington has raced the week before.

I respect your record as a horse trainer but you have a massive chip on your shoulder when someone says something you don't agree with . You came on here a couple of months back and asked for some ideas , positive ideas , from people you consider are negative , but you never came back and discussed or commented those suggestions , but you will jump at the chance to hop on today to give someone a serve , very positive . Not everyone gets everything right all the time , although i think you will disagree with that . 2

I was not bagging Pam merely making the comment that three horses who obviously didn’t show anything earlier at the meeting turned those runs around, DRAMATICALLY as can happen in wet tracks. Well it doesn't come across as such , your first comment in months is to try and disprove what someone else thought . I could name a dozen or more that lined up on the 1st or 2nd days and didn't perform then lined up on a later day to fail again , so not such a good thing they didn't have Pam's thoughts . And i would suggest many thought as Pam did going on the scr's on Saturday and the size of many fields .
