Noodlum

Just reading a biography of Muldoon, and it makes reference to Noodlum and his co owner, the incompetent cabinet  minister, Colin Mclachlan.

I have less than fond memories of Mclachlan, but have a vacant patch  as regards Noodlum. Any particular memories, thoughts??

Noodlum, won a heap in a row, set some record, I do remember the day he got beat though, it made the news, horse named Commissioner (not sure about the spelling though), think it was at Ashburton, may have been boxing day, cant remember, gee I dont know everything, in fact when I think about it I dont know anything.

I'm gunna have a look at the records on hrnz, after going there I will at least know something.

15 in a row and it was Commissioner but at Rangiora.

42 starts , 28 wins, not bad, I was right on the Boxing day loss, only a head in it, a horse that won that many in a row probably had developed a swelled head but not big enough lol.

Lost again a week later when beaten by Parlez Vous, Milnes horse from Edendale.

Didnt quite reach the same heights later in his career, finished up at Hutt Park, cup meeting, I think had some injury issues but nonetheless less one of the better ones to have raced.

Quite an Impressive strike rate. Was struggling to come up with a better one. Lazarus pretty close.

Lazarus had 29 starts lifetime in NZ for 26 wins, inc the 2 huge NZ Cup wins . (and 2 placings behind Nat on 'Chase the Dream' in a couple of feature 2 year old races)

Think nearly all of Noodlum's wins were 2 year old and 3 year old races ?

Noodlum was owned by his breeder Mrs A A Wilson with  Freeman Holmes who trained him and mostly drove him although Maurice Holmes did drive him in some of his  2 year old races which coincided with his final year race driving .  Colin McLachlan did part own a horse with Muldoon from memory and  can't remember it's name but  certainly not in the same class as Noodlum.

Muldoon didn't surround himself  with great talent in some cases, valuing loyalty over ability.

Still a great horse and sire

Thanks. The book did make reference to another horse they ran called Macdoon  . Not sure if that's the one you meant.

Nothing wrong with finishing up at Hutt Park back in those days. I can recall Locarno and Bonnies Chance winning the Wgtn Cup in the early 80s. Delightful Lady got beaten. Then the likes of Master Mood. Bionic Chance etc. The Cup was worth $40,000 in the late 80s. I recall Scotch Tar racing there, can't remember if he won or not.

Hutt Park was where he run his last race, Wellington Cup was his swansong, maybe you picked me up wrong in my comment.

As I stated before looking back I think harness racing today  is a shadow of those times, after the cup meeting there was the miracle mile at Addington then they moved on to Auckland at xmas, new year then Addington new year then Hutt Park, then Forbury, there was a continual stream of top class horse races.

Times change, not always for the better but we still have to live in the present.

He started off 100m behind handicap at Hutt Park, against loose class trotters and set a 2400m record at the time of 3.09 or so. winning by 10 lengths. Quite a horse old Scotch Tar. probably the most 'erratic' I ever saw. headed for the outside fence at Alexandra park with Wolfie driving one night in the home straight , veering right off , but still won. Owner trainer 'Slim' Dykeman engaged Wolfie and Bob Cameron for a lot of the win's and that paid off well (getting the best going round involved on many occasions)  driving that very difficult horse.

Raced and led against the pacers one night at Addington. Run down in the straight I seem to recall.
