I did not count the strokes but from watching it live and 40+ years of watching races i thought both riders were excessive in their whip use, whether legal or not , it looked like a bash up to win at all costs , not pretty . This is a subjective opinion based on what i consider appropriate , not trying to leverage my opinion on to anyone else .
-
Whips were a different weapon to the one they carry now . the old ones had a sting .
-
When racing was great . The beauty about that win on AC was everyone said the horse couldn't stay 2000 , but a master class in patience and balance was just enough . If i remember rightly he also one the 2yo race on top filly Yir Tiz , dam of Mr Tiz , one of our top riders gave up the ride so Piggott could ride her .
-
Well that is subjective , the beauty of opinions , we happen to differ on this one , but feel free to continue to try and prove you are correct and that i am wrong , as i am sure you will
-
Yet again , what part of " IMO the rules should be changed " did you not read . And i have not stated that i am againat whips , there should be balanced limits as to how many times a horses may be struck , that's for a bigger debate as to how many . BUT 23 strikes on any horse in the final 300 or so mtrs is more than excessive .
-
Doh , what part of " no horses ' should be hit that much did you not read .
-
You would be surprised if you had bought her expecting an Oaks filly , has an exceptional turn of foot . Be interesting if she goes to Aus to see if she just has NZ speed or she can match the Aussie speed , been a while since we had one that could really match them .
-
If she had any improvement it would have been found after yesterday , but that was tough yesterday and often you don't know how much it has taken out of them till the next race , then it can be too late to realise it took out more than thought . Both in good stables tho . They are the formline for the oaks .
-
So you reckon the 3 extra before the 100 was the difference , because he got extra power out of his horse by these 3 illegal strilkes , i would suggest the 15 strikes by OB to CG's 9/10 inside the 100 would have been the difference considering Bosson never looked the winner till the line . Perhaps Grylls should have been more aggressive inside the last 100 . Or maybe as often happens the horse on the wider slightly better strip was the difference . IMO the whole thing is a bad look , no horses should be hit that much , especially fillies . IMO the rules should be changed so both those horses would be disqualified for excessive use . Both those fillies had a gut buster yesterday , especially the winner , going to be interesting to see how they come thru it heading towards the Oaks in 2 Saturday's , could have flattened them .

Yea but we were just the " Colonials " back then . We're a much more " Modern Beast " now .

This just shows how incompetant the stipes and rule makers are , as you say above , watching beaten horses getting the stick is unnecessary , especially after poor rides , or horses clearly going to win and the jock is still putting a couple round it's arse . Completely uncalled for .
-
Grylls was just as bad , so in my opinion Bosson got no advantage over the 2nd horse , his only advantage IMO is that he has better balance whilst using the whip . Plus he was on a better strip . Both jocks should have been outed not just the winner , and both horses would have been disqualified if the rule was that excessive use meant disqualification . I was cringing watching it , especially as it was fillies . It's simply not a good look . I'll put my hands up and admit i have told jocks not to miss a beat when they go for the whip , but now it makes my heart sink when i think about it , perhaps i am just getting soft i don't know but i think there must be a better way . Perhaps an absolute limit a horse can be hit behind the saddle in a race , with limits within the last 400/200 . Clear and definined , no excuses , disqualified if guilty . It wont take long to get it sorted out , 2/3 disqualifications to show serious and everyone will fall into line .
-
Looked to me he only hit behind the saddle every 4 strides till the last hundred , only once behind before the 200 , twice more between the 200 and the 100 and only 7 times behind the saddle in total , 4 of those in the last 100 . Can't compare it to OB today .
-
I agree Freda , the thing is they will only have to disqualify a couple of big race winners to get the message thru , in fact if it is made clear what the consequences are it will only have to be minor races to show you mean business . When i was a kid my brother and myself would religiously end up spending most of the first day of school holidays in seperate bedrooms after being told no fighting or else . Well the rest of the hols were sweet after that , we knew mum was serious and pulled our heads in . Only issue was we always scrapped on the way up the stairs to see who got mum's bedroom , cause it was much more interesting .
-
As soon as i seen the finish i knew he was in trouble , in fact Grylls as well might be in trouble but apparently not . Whilst i'm not in agreement with you regarding a certain stable as this happens in all the big races no matter which stable . Until horses are disqualified when jocks break this rule then it will continue , jocks will only fall into line if they think they will lose the race .

Some of them need their phones out there with them so they can get google maps .

Some of them couldn't look good on winx .

The form of some horses would improve .

Well i see this dickhead appeared in court this morning , pled guiltyand recieved 100 hours community service and counseling along with an $8800 fine and a lifetime ban from NZ racecourses . Didn't give any insight into his motivation , just a dickhead . -

The owners and trainers in particular have both languished from a lack of strong leadership , to be honest i could actually put any kind of leadership , in particular the trainers . The breeders assn have done very little to help or protect the small breeder hence the small breeder has all but disappeared , only the brave have stuck it out . We only have to look back at the way the TA handled the return to racing after the covid lockdown to see how much in disarray they are . -
Had to go back and have a look , but to be honest i don't think there was much he could do , both horses in front never moved and the horse on his outside held it's place and he never got room to do anything , he can't just barge out so just looked desperately unlucky for mine .
-
How can you take a 1000 mtrs , 1 minute , to make a decision , unforgivable . But then when he did press on he didn't commit to that , just lazy in my opinion . Then in the second race the winner got away with murder and not 1 of the riders worked it out , i actually backed the winner and was counting my money at the 600 . It's almost like they don't know pace and haven't done the form on the horses around them and just ride to what the tote says .

They both dropped that baton a long , long time ago and never been able to find it again . I doubt even if they did happen to find it again they are both toooo limp wristed to be able to hold on to it for long . Anyway the Trainers Assn is so deep in the head office pocket they would need sky rockets to find their way out .
