Ranga, you obviously go back a lot further than I do! What years was he sending horses to Greymouth and can you possibly remember any of his winners. I don’t dwell on past winners, couldn’t even remember Cup winners years, prefer a maiden race any day!
-
Nelson Trotting Club have been financially short for many years. Clubs that run only 4 meetings a year are hardly going to be financially ok is this day and age. Not sure what happen ended but a few years ago they got picked up in an audit for GST irregularities where they had claimed GST when they should not have and got a bill for $140k to pay!!! If I remember right they were also the Club that hadn’t been paying their Local Body rates as well but may have been another club. Would not be surprised if the racing is not still going in a few years time and the track converted into residential housing.

Was Mark Purdon training in Canterbury when Greymouth track was still open Ranga? If he was I don’t remember him winning races there at all!
-
Looked at the odds for tomorrow and is there anyone that can see anything worthwhile backing over a mile, as the odds do seem rather short! Sunday racing will always pull in punters that haven’t got much else to do but I really can not see why on earth Nelson has decided to run miles and some stands at that????? Nelson is a club that is struggling financially and is lucky to still be operating and running this meeting wouldn’t be helping their cause!
-
Greymouth trots were brilliant! Big dividends and no AllStars racing.
-
Cambridge trots today are going to run at a big loss! Have a look at the tote pools and there is bigger all offloading. When their is only a few hundred in the win and place pools with under an hour to a race there is problems. No way can harness clubs survive when there is a lack of interest from punters unfortunately
-
Seriously, whoever decided to program mile races needs to give themselves an uppercut!! Standing start mile racing?????? Semi miss away and you are out of it!!! What happened to the 1200metre races that Forbury ran?? Thats right just a blatantly dumb idea.
-
Harness Racing Clubs are trying to self destroy themselves!,, What is the flippen point in racing over a damn mile? Far too short distance and being so short if you are out the back the front ones aren’t going to be coming back to you!,, Is the blatantly stupid program planning coming from HRNZ or the clubs?
-
Vintage Rose was an absolute cert in that field the way she had been going! Watch her recent runs over 2200m and she was a moral! Was major overs when she opened up but then again every now and again the Bookies do stuff up.
-
No kidding Whiteman, that was the point!,
-
The fact is that they are drab and boring and unpredictable? Not great for encouraging punting
-
Ranga no point discussing it with you, it is a New Year! Mile racing is drab and not a great punting option for serious punters. Timaru yesterday was far better racing than what Cambridge or Auckland will offer with their crap miles.
-
Of course you can disagree, at the end of the day the punters will be the voters! Mile racing in the U.S.A is boring and it is here as well. If you are out the back you have got no show unless you are a total freak.
-
Just need to improve my driving now!
-
Ranga wasn’t aimed at Nelson. Was a statement to say that mile racing in NZ should be banned. Cambridge are Into it on Friday night and that is just blatantly dumb decision by the programming people involved. What is this fixation on mile racing that some of these clubs are now entering into? Total turnoff and racing over a distance is what makes NZ racing so much better than other countries who race over the short distances.
-
Mile racing in NZ should be banned. So ridiculous as a betting proposition. Horses can go just as quick mile rate wise over 2000m or 1950m
-
Yeah got a few handy horses lol
-
Globe, nothing at all to do with being well heeled, and personally speaking we have got many heels!!! If he wants to put millions into the harness industry then that is his business and certainly never envious of anyone, don’t need to be! As for being envious of the AllStars stable, would wonder why that would be? Globe, the industry is haemorrhaging big time already and many people know this,.
-
Whiteman, I appreciate Trevor spends plenty owning horses, but it doesn’t appear that he is starving though!
-
Wonder if Mr McCarthy would also publicise what the costs on average per month was to be able to achieve that $500k?
-
Chief, yes I do think that it does matter if Ricky was breathing or not! Due to the fact that many people were actually watching the unfortunate event on tv meant that people were deeply concerned! If it happened on the training track then there probably would be concern but probably not so much!, Anyway, the great thing is that Ricky appears to be on the improve rather than what appeared initially!
-
Why is it hard to believe? All Harness enthusiasts are well aware that the AllStars stables plunder the majority of the stake money in the big races. Can Mr McCarthy kindly publish what the monthly stake money won on average for all the other owners of horses raced outside of the AllStars stable? That would be far more beneficial going forward as to whether it is going to be worthwhile for new and existing owners to race a horse!!!!!!!!

The Stipes reports are generally very poor, they state the flippen obvious that anyone can see from replays. Would not think it would take a lot of training to be a Stipendiary Steward as what do they actually do? And yes Dougie, you are correct the tote turnover is definitely declining going by the tote pools that are showing on Trackside. There has been a lot of racing over Xmas period and some people back at work today, but the couple of races I saw today from Cromwell had very small pools.

Personally think that due to the circumstances and that Ricky May is well liked and one of our best drivers there was a helluva lot of interest into how Ricky was. Yes of course the May family was entitled to privacy seem Ricky was pretty critical in the early stages. However, I am sure most people also appreciate the work that Andrew Fitzgerald, Garrick Knight and Micky Guerin did in trying to inform the concerned of the situation. Only problem was that we seemed to get different stories. We were told that Ricky may have stopped breathing for up to 20 minutes and then we hear that he was breathing when Ellie Barron got to him! So if he was breathing, I wonder why CPR was needed to be performed?

Fair enough Ranga, but to the detriment of race winners who raced for $6k yesterday and $7k tomorrow? It costs just as much to keep a race winner in work as a maiden! Seriously, why would you bother?
