Providing “tossers” like Farty stay over there, then everything will be just fine. It is good to have debate and everyone won’t agree with each other, but the thing was, Farty and a couple of his mates were contributing nothing of any value except to to jjst antagonise. He may get a bit pissed off if he can’t have a few of us on, so he will probably come over under a different name in the future! Watch this space I would say.

Lazarus Sale: This will be interesting to follow
Brodie replied to Happy Sunrise's topic in Trotting Chat
Lazarus sold for around $4 million! Not too sure whether that is a good price or not? Obviously it will buy a lot of yearlings and lay a few training bills! The owners are clearly not interested in breeding themselves from Lazarus! Thing is I would’ve thought that he may have been worth a bit more than that as a stallion ! I am sure he would’ve got quite a few mares for several seasons. Say first year 100 mares at $10k would’ve brought in 1million on those conservative figures. They would’ve got at least the 4 million I would’ve thought even if he was only an average performer at stud and an absolute packet if he was successfull, and far more than the $4mill. They obviously went for the money in the Bank is better than the slight gamble! -
Basil, very interesting story! Benter isn’t Brodie and doubt anyone would be able to be that successful with Australasian Gallops. Certainly wouldnt with harness as you would get chopped till it wasn’t worth investing just like they do in Britain!

Basil, you are right, but the notable thing is that of the 6 horses you quoted , 5 were from the one stable. Others will come along, they always do. The problem as we know in the open ranks is that stable ensures that other stables sell overseas because they can’t be bothered running for the dregs, end of story. -
I personally have gone pretty quiet on the investing or punting recently. Didnt even bother having a go today at Rangiora. Fixed Odds opening odds have got even more short recently with anything with a good chance at unders! With account, agency and oncourse being restricted I can’t really be bothered at the moment. Wont worry the TAB about fixed odds betters not betting as they don’t really want them punting and winning as they are more interested In Sports betting as the costs are less and yield far better, that is why they have bought into Paddy Power. Will still look at the odds but I can take it or leave it at the moment as it isn’t worth my time currently. Contrary to what some on the other site think, I did it for the challenge rather than the money however it has got to the stage where it is an uneven playing field, that I can’t be bothered playing into!

Happy you weren’t a trouble maker at all. The intelligent posters were had on by a certain element, that was allowed to get away with it. At times it got quite toxic with certain ones just posting crap, calling certain ones liars etc. when in fact they were the ones talking the BS! Not sure why the site was allowed to deteriorate until I had a personal message from Scooby, from out of the blue, which was a load of BS. ”The Brodster” thing was just a bit of humour! Scooby has a problem by the look of it with people that back themselves, he seems to want dickheads on that just want to be antagonistic. There are still some very good contributors on the other site but will,be interesting to see whether people want to remain on there when most of the intelligent posters have now moved over to BOAY!

Fart Too Much I beleive had at least 2 other names over the years. He has posted a lot but most of it was just trying to have a go at the more intelligent posters, just because he could. Take me a few days to count up the number of times he tried to have a crack at “The Brodster”

Jim Ferguson also trained a pretty good horse named Maida Million I think I remember

Hey Grandad, ever have a horse in that Jewels comp? No Sonny, had one qualify but didn’t think it is in the best interest of my horse, and so didn’t go! Best decision I could’ve made, as started at Addington when all the Jewels 3 year olds were up in Cambridge. Horse bolted in and sold to Perth for big money!
-
Portfolio, if you knew me, you would know that I am a risk taker, and a major gambler. Obviously I appreciate it that owners love to have a horse in the Jewels! However, if I owned a horse that had qualified by say being the 10th highest stake earner and I drew 4 on the second line over 1609m at Cambridge against 3 or 4 AllStar horse, after a long season and my horse was past its best, would it be in the best interests of the horse? No, it wouldn’t be and could affect a possible sale, overseas if I had been thinking of selling! I personally would put the welfare of the horse and future of the horse ahead of running in one race a long way from home over 1609metres! Personally wouldn’t get too excited about telling the grand kids that I had a horse that ran last at Cambridge in the Jewels! Anyway. I wish everyone that has a horse starting at Cambridge the best of luck.
-
Globe, no I wasn’t talking about the horses that have a good chance of running in the money. There will be horses that quAlified that will have to start now! As an owner I wouldn’t want to have to trek a horse up to Cambridge in the hope that half of them fall over to get any extra money apart from the appearance money! Of course Majestic Man has a great chance of being In The money providing he draws ok! There will be some that aren’t that good and will draw poor over the mile and a trip to Cambridge will knock them! It is harder on the South Island Horses than the North Island when they race at Cambridge obviously, and there are far more that will have qualified I would say. Will be interesting to see what happens this year!
-
It is going to be very interesting to see how the Jewels fields hold up this year! Are the fields going to be maximum size for the mile start? Are all the top stake money winners all going to travel from the South Island to race probably only for the one race over 1609m, when they will be running against better horses many classes better than what they are? Yes I know they get good appearance money but is it enough for an owner or trainer to risk sending their horse up with little prospect of stake money, and stuffing the horse for immediate racing? Yes it is an honour to have a horse race in the Jewels but it is a risk that can have financial consequences if the horse goes no good, then a possible sale could be hindered!
-
I wondered whether that was the reason as well, but the thing is if you don’t want to line up against the AllStars then you can see the noms and withdraw them! It is done every week, so a bit puzzling!
-
Question needs to be asked, why does Addington always extend their nominations to the next morning???? This week the meeting is on Friday and nominations were meant to close on Monday afternoon. For some unknown reason they have once again been extended to close at 8.30am? There we’re 160 nominations for 9 of its races, so an average of close to 18 horses per race! Does anyone know why they continue to do this every meeting, even when they have plenty of nominations? Why don’t they just make it Tuesday 8.30am?????????

Fair enough regarding the repeat business Richie, and that in itself is a major worry going forward. If Ashburton club is in turmoil currently then with so much on the line HRNZ have had to make a call. There is no way that that track should’ve been waterlogged on Saturday. The Thing is that accommodation supply would be better in Chch as well rather than Ashvegas a,though it is on,y an hour down the road I suppose. The Jewels needed a revamp and hopefully 1950m at Addington is a start!
-
Went to the Jewels at Ashburton last year, and wouldn’t say it was a resounding success, As you know I hate mile racing, but the thing is as a spectacle it is not flash at Ashburton. If we want to get new people into racing I beleive you have got a bigger chance racing at Addington Where the population of Chch is so much larger. The day is extremely heavily subsidised by the racing industry so I think the best venue in NZ should be used to showcase it to the public. The longer distance would be preferable as well for racing as the mile rate thing is so not worth the paper it is written on nowadays. Addington has so much more experience coping with the big days and will do a far better job than what Ashburton would do. Yes I do feel for the Ashburton club but obviously there are things going on that we don’t know about!
-
I was told a year or so ago that Addington was looking at building motel units basically where the old main grandstand was! Has anyone heard whether this was still on the agenda?
-
I suppose they will race at Wingstui on the grass but they wouldn’t hold too many meetings due to the weather down in Dunedin. Forbury from all reports is pretty broke and stakes are hardly worth racing for. They are lucky that there are trainers from Canterbury that are still going down to Forbury, but once that stops happening, they will be toast!
-
2000m would be fine but 1609m would not be fine! I believe that over the next few years some of the provincial clubs will move their racing to the Metropolitan tracks as they can not afford to race their meetings. Tracks like Forbury will close and be sold off as residential sections for housing! Reality of life really, if it isn’t viable then you finish up, like any business!
-
Helluva risk betting early on the Jewels so far out. They may not even start, draws at Cambridge are important! You will probably get more on the day as well,on the Fixed Odds!
-
There will be more punters prepared to offload at Addington 1950m than at Ashburton over the mile. Ashburton track is good for times but as a spectacle when you are oncourse is a bit average, as you are too far away seem there is the galloping track,on the outside. Think it is a good idea to,go to Addington as it will allow for fairer and better racing if over the 1950m.
-
Richard was an extremely successful driver and trainer when at Kerrytownnand Racing has always been stronger in Canterbury than Auckland. You would think he would have cleaned up in Auckland going by his Canterbury record! For some strange reason he never did that well?....
-
I personally don’t touch the Gallops, however I believe that it is harder now than ever to make money on the punt on harness. The TAB has changed things dramatically over the past couple of years or so! The tote odds are pretty hopeless when you have so many of the place divs being under $2 you aren’t going to make money. The fixed odds system was fair and reasonable when it first came in but has now become a miserablefest. Pathetic unders on opening and only lengthen out at the last moment so you have to be either oncourse or sitting at the TAB all night and that isn’t possible due to many closing earlier. Restrictions also play a major part and so it is hardly worth the effort nowadays. As I have said many times the bosses think that by restrictions and pathetic unders they get the yields up on harness! Yes it will but to the detriment of the industry as they are losing punters big time. Run a business like this and they will go broke.
-
Probably give them a ring Hesi. Would be interesting to know what the harness turnover is doing especially the amount that are taking on fixed odds! Seems to be secret squirrel though. Sports betting is where they want the money punted on as that is there biggest income apparently and costs them next to nothing!
-
This site has so much information that is worth reading. I note under Racing News the Racing Board produces the statistics for the amount of turnover annually for both oncourse betting and Fixed odds for,GALLOPSwhich is very interesting HOWEVER I have never seen the HARNESS TURNOVER for oncourse and fixed odds betting! Is this shown anywhere does anyone know or is it a secret? Would be very interesting to see these as I firmly believe that the TAB is heavily against punters investing on fixed odds harness wagering. The opening odds are now totally pathetic to what they used to be for harness and hardly any value on anything nowadays, and fellow punters that I have spoken to are saying the same thing! Many are not bothering now and I believe that the TAB are more than happy with situation as they are looking to continually improve the yield to the detriment of turnover. They are hoping that the Paddy Power investment is going to pay off big time but they need to have punters prepared to offload and the way they are going I wouldn’t count on it! Are others finding the odds getting more miserable especially the favourites when there are often 5 or 6 paying well under $2 for a place in big fields!
