  1. There's nothing wrong with making a move 600 out - or more than that. If the tempo of the race is going to result in a sprint home, then putting the pace on at a time to suit your own mount is a perfectly reasonable tactic. The problem is the inability to judge pace....and that problem - IMO - is endemic, as is the inability to 'read' a race among officials. My apprentices were expected to work to the clock. If I wished an even work at 14 to the furlong, then that's what I expected to happen. They became good at it, and were constantly among the leading riders around. They hated being made to do it, though..! one lad, who moved to Sydney upon the ending of his apprenticeship, was riding work for Gai Waterhouse. The lass still working for me rang him to catch up, and in the conversation complained bitterly about the 'bitch' [ me ] requiring her to work to time. ' I thought it was crap, too,' said the lad, 'but now I realise just how important it is. Listen to her.' I cut out a newspaper article from years ago where David Walsh had been charged with 'not giving his mount every chance..' Stipe at the time was Noel McCutcheon, who seemed to have a god-like status among the fraternity. Walsh, although not always everyone's favourite, has long been recognised as one of the finest judges of pace produced in NZ racing. David was trying to explain that the horse he rode, upon which he won the previous start, was not able to take a similar handy possie as the leader was an apprentice girl ' who was attempting to go through the sound barrier' . The pace was suicidal, he pointed out, and his horse would have been among the first beaten. He eventually ran on to finish fourth on this particular occasion. The pace of the race, said McCutcheon, is irrelevant.....FFS, the pace of the race is everything.
  2. Ah, our 'management' fixed that problem at Riccarton a few seasons ago.....they watered the outside to make it as unattractive as the sodden inner.

    Winx

Finished feeding and rushed inside to watch the great mare...trying to swallow the lump in my throat as she let down and stretched home...now I hope no-one comes in until I can mop my eyes and restore some dignity...! What an absolute privilege to witness.
  4. To bring this forward....horse has been returned to vendor's agent pending adjudication by Disputes Tribunal.
  5. I'm with you there. The shocking inaction with a couple of serious horse abuse cases down here ( and no doubt there have been others less well publicised) disgusted me and I haven't donated since. A local horse float company owner hit a hawk while driving, wounding it but not fatally. He rang the SPCA to be told by the woman answering the phone ' we don't do birds.....can't you hit it on the head or something?' Luckily he remembered there was a woman who rescued wild birds and was able to deliver it to her.
  6. Moi..?
  7. Pretty sure he was by Kurdistan too.

    CRUSADERS.....

A friend of mine was on the Wahine when she went down...working, not travelling. One of his mates grabbed him by the hair as he was being dragged away in the water...very lucky to be alive.

    CRUSADERS.....

Well.....kinda and kinda not....I remember people referring to the Hinemoa but never travelled on her - or the Maori. Believe it or not, I had never crossed the strait by sea until fairly recently, when I took a horse to Tauranga, and then a year or so later, a couple to Foxton. Picton to Wellington of course, not from Lyttelton as in earlier times.

    CRUSADERS.....

Oh no I'm not....a baby that is....I remember Lin Colling, played for Auckland I think, a sort of understudy for Sid Going as i recall and made the All Blacks too.
  11. Pretty light I'd have to say, well as far as I could see. However, with the old stand being unavailable [earthquake damage to foundations discovered recently ] there may have been patrons in the upstairs boxes as opposed to milling around at ground level. There did seem to be plenty of noise coming from above! And yes, I may be parochial...Pitty could have been tongue-in-cheek but local horses have definitely improved in recent years.
  12. Ah....that puts a different slant on things, now, doesn't it? So.....when the vendors agent claimed a 'vet check' had been carried out, and subsequently it was found not to have been, does that qualify as 'misleading ' to the extent of nullifying the sale?
  13. Gee you're an unsporting lot....Jack Frost spanks the field and the opposition is poor? And what did Amanda Swartz' hurdler do to his rivals in the first? ?
  14. A verbal assurance only, W. However, that verbal assurance did indicate that a vet check had been undertaken. We now have a stalemate of sorts....vendor is refusing to budge and wants the second instalment of payment, as his his/her right given the detailed T.& C listed earlier. Purchasers are in a no-man's land of being responsible for maintenance costs for an animal they don't own.
  15. Ok, was asked to find out which room had the average meal..I've just re-read the thread and yes, Balmerino seems to be the culprit. Usually it is extremely well received, so will get back to them and confirm. The $80 sign-up fee ? was told it was up to the promotions man, and is done by many other clubs as well. Well, sorry guys, aren't you trying to get people enthused ? instead of turning them off? so passed everyone's opinion about that too. A indication of being completely out-of-touch I feel.
  16. I thought crowd was light too....to be fair, probably just as well with the grand old stand out of commission but the general public wouldn't have known that. Have never had occasion to partake of meal in Balmerino room, but it should be excellent, shame to hear that it was poor. With all the options available, sub-standard food just doesn't cut it. I'll make a few enquiries myself.

    CRUSADERS.....

    Just the best.!
  19. He's not a young horse so I would assume so. I guess no reason, with suitable recovery, why he wouldn't be a good hunter or similar though.
  20. He won't be starting anywhere. He's stuffed.
  21. That is, as always, informative. Thanks Curious. I've now become better informed about buying cars ! Now we have facts in front of us all, I should add that I would have taken a different course in this scenario....but I think the advice given makes correct progress unambiguous.
  22. Thanks, Curious, that's exactly what I was trying to ascertain. Puts it all very clearly I think.
  23. Point 3 for me. There are some very reputable dealers/agents, and of course their livelihood is dependant upon them getting paid a fee and/or a percentage. But there are cowboys who do a great deal of 'clipping' I think...and I do know of situations where dealers - and trainers - can misrepresent the purchase price so that the only one that gets fleeced properly is the original owner. There was a regular poster some years ago who was very vociferous about the need for a 'bloodstock code of conduct ' - not sure if there is one now or not - he got a lot of stick for his opinions but I thought he had a fair point.
  24. In answer to Arsenic - it seems you are not quite clear as to the matter causing the disagreement. And, although I have my own opinions, I am not posting for that reason - rather to get a consensus from others of what, if anything, can be done to resolve matters without too much angst. Horses become unfit for purpose all the time, for many reasons, no-one is disputing that fact. The issue here, I understand, is one of misrepresentation - and good faith. Upon arrival, the area of concern was brought to the attention of the vendor's agent who confirmed a vet check had been performed and the horse passed fit. Why, under those circumstances, would the purchasers spend more money to repeat the process when they trusted the agent? They took said agent's word as being in good faith and this is where the problem has arisen, it seems. On-line auctions are a cheap option to move horses on, and the system can only work well if full disclosure is made when advertising.
  25. Excellent post, Jess, and good advice. A korero with a satisfactory result - for both parties - would be the best resolution for all.
