the galah Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Junior driver A Cameron after 300m steered her horse onto the wheel of the horse inside her, causing her horse to trip and break. As well she flattened the tyre of precious megan resulting in it taking no real part thereafter. An extremely poor piece of driving.t The stipes apparently gave her some friendly advice.Yet Sam Thornley loses his licence for some time for excessive use of the whip. Talk about inconsistent enforcement of the rules. Inconsistent stipe penalties seems to be creeping back. into harness racing. I don't know why some seem to be favored over others although who the stipes on duty are seems to be a factor again. 2 Quote

Because the use of the whip in harness racing is just like the head in rugby - a no go area. Hence, the seemingly 'inconsistent' penalties. Quote

Drivers didn’t have to be able to count to ten or wonder whether they have hit to many times without a break. Blatantly ridiculous rule needs to go! Quote
Chief Stipe Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 Tell me who can tell the difference in real time between hitting the side of a horse's rump and the sulky shaft? 3 Quote
Brodie Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 (edited) The thing with Junior drivers is that really only learn on race day with fuller fields than at trials where the fields are small and times are slower. I respect any junior driver that takes out a license and then has to step up and race against not only their peers but against experienced horsemen. I believe that the Stipes need to take into account the inexperience of the Juniors when looking at things and they clearly did with Alana but not Sam Thornley. Both are going to make it as reins people in the Junior ranks and you have to remember that our top junior John Morrison took over 100 drives to gain his first win! Stipes are very erratic with their decision making and Some of their rules that they are applying just doesn’t make sense. Edited August 14, 2019 by Brodie Quote

I don't agree that the stipes should take into account the inexperience of juniors. Thornley seems to have been penalized because of his inexperience, whereas A Cameron has gotten away with sub standard driving that an amateur would have got 3 months for. One rule for the juniors .another rule for the amateurs and another for everyone else. Seems ridiculous to me and will only lead back to where harness racing was a few years ago where those on the wrong end of inconsistent penalties become disenchanted. Quote

I understood it makes no difference whether you hit the horse, the shaft or thin air. I think you will get fined if you just do the motion of a strike with the whip even if they can see you never hit the horse once. 1 Quote
Furlong Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 I think you are right galah. They don't want anything that looks like hitting the horse that will upset the "do gooders". Another case of the majority giving in to the minority, in this looney left liberal world we live in. No common sense whatsoever. 4 Quote

Rusty Posted August 15, 2019 Posted August 15, 2019 Apparently a driver can't even whip another driver when going down the back straight without getting fined these days. 2 Quote

Nor do a 'Gavin Smith' and hit a stable runner down the home straight to get its mind on the job. Oh for the good ole days. 1 1 Quote
Flagship uberalles Posted August 15, 2019 Posted August 15, 2019 I must say when the whip eventually disappears not many big punters will have much confidence in betting on the horses, not that I think it's a good thing for the horses, but a few wake up calls does help.....it will get to the point where horses will just switch off and punters will leave in droves because form won't Matter. 1 1 1 Quote
