Pitman
Where will they race? At home, Greymouth or Reefton? I think it should be Reefton, best track on Coast with good facilities. I hope decision is made early enough so that alternatives can be organised. I have seen photos and videos of Kumara track and it doesn't look good.

Reefton
INSIST? Everyone with any sense has known there was a huge issue for weeks but heads have been buried in the sand presumably to appease the Club or the public(or maybe out of embarassment that John Messara's favourite Coast course has once again proven not up to it). I saw the videos Michael has and it is not too good but equally I do feel for them to an extent but if you neglect your track that is what potentially happens. Organising an alternative day will be no problem if they run it themselves but if they dump the day and someone else has to organise staff and sponsors it would be bloody hard. Greymouth has heavy rain forecast for tomorrow so their track might not be in too flash a nick either. Thank God for the mighty Reefton Jockey Club!(he says with considerable modesty)
Chief Stipe
Get on the phone. Get all your fellow trainers on the phone. Harass the shyte out of NZTR - wake them from their festival slumber. Get organised.
Reefton
Of course Bernard and NZTR would not want 'that bastard from the West Coast' (as one of the breeders once described me many years ago) gloating about having to use a course they proposed to shut just nine months ago. And make no error if it comes to pass then gloat he will - long and hard!

You'll be entitled to gloat and have a "told you so" moment. But it won't happen unless stakeholders with real skin in the game don't make it as uncomfortable for NZTR as they can. Give a friendly journo a ring on a newspaper or three telling them about possible health and safety issues if it goes ahead. Don't give Bernard any room to move but in the right direction. Ring round all the other stakeholders. I bet Bernard isn't back to work until Monday at the earliest. Not for him working over Christmas/New Year dunging out stables, doing early morning trackwork, carting horses all round the country. Pitman
I trust that PC will have no bearing on safety here. The safety of horses and riders is way more important than that!!!! I don't want to believe that decision makers are going to be embarrassed over this venue but it is looking increasingly like it 1

Mardy
Seems odd that there is issues with the track, whereas compared to last week someone said that the track is good after it had been attacked by wild pigs.Who made the decision and decided to say that the track was all good?.I'm going to have a couple of horses run at Kumara, and as much as i love having my horses run around,i wouldn't want them to run on a track that isn't up to standard. Freda
That's terrible management. Trainers/owners need surety over racedays/dates, it isn't cheap travelling horses, staff and connections to various places, a decision should have been made one way or another and stakeholders notified in timely fashion. No matter if the problem was pigs, tractors, or weather, it seems that no-one is prepared to be accountable for ANYTHING because they might have to cop the flak. My old man used to tell me that the person who never made a mistake, never made anything.
Reefton
Kumara gone. Decision made an hour ago. More info to come re where the raceday goes Omoto(which will be heavy 10 this morning with a dodgy forecast) or Reefton(dead 4 this morning and it is always better weather at this time of year in Reefton)

Reefton
We suggested that they run the piss up there and we run the meeting at Reefton(with a big screen at Kumara obviously) but the response was 'not an option' Strikes me as a bloody great option. Winton and Invercargill did it two years ago

Oh dear for the Westland Racing Club Pam - they follow Greymouth on Tuesday - if they plough it up on Saturday not sure how good it will be for the Westland meeting. Anyway forecast can be wrong and given the Wife(particularly) and I have just sent two and a half hours scrubbing dirty number cloths from yesterday we can do without the hassle of having to do it again Thursday and the other organisational hassles. This begs the question though of whether Kumara is a viable option as a racecourse - three out of four years cancelled and Messara and co want to retain it?
Reefton
I have suggested in the past they should install an all weather trotting track at Kumara - the party goers have no idea of the difference and the ben hurs would be guaranteed to run! It is definitely not an option any longer for galloping. Edited January 6, 2020 by Reefton

Rusty
I listened to the Kumara Club president talk to Des on Radio Trackside this arvo. If anybody else heard it, I'd be interested in your thoughts. My take on it was Des was a bit taken aback when the president was adamant the club (Kumara) wasn't merely transferring to Greymouth, but forgoing everything about the day, because "it was just too hard". Something just doesn't stack up here. Something just doesn't seem right. Probably never get to the bottom of it, but it's a shame the industry and the code can't work in together and just make sh!t happen. Run the nuggets at Omoto. As an outsider looking in, no one else other than a few on a committee would really care. Here's hoping for a good day on Saturday. Conducted by the Greymouth JC, because it was too hard for the other club.
