What are the biggest issues facing racing right now?
nomates replied to phdStudent's topic in Galloping Chat
The loss of radio coverage was the last in a long line of ill thought out ideas by people who thought the majority of punters were addicted and would do anything to get a bet on , how little they knew . I have met very few stupid or addicted punters in my near 50 years of going to TAB's or race courses . I have met many very ignorant and stupid people who are paid to manage NZ racing and it's infrastructure . I know who's company i prefer to keep . -
Massive clean out Huey , but can't see it in the short term , i think there needs to be some kind of catastrophic breakdown before they put their hands up . If i had a lot of finance invested in NZ racing i would now be seriously looking at down sizing to protect myself . As a betting man i'm putting more money on the naysayers , shortening by the day . But not on the NZ TAB they are still keeping the sycophants and self servers at short odds . I'm still amazed that no high profile racing participant has spoken out about their concerns , what's it going to take .

Another thing which would help you Lena is do some research on the history of NZ racing and how it was such a successful industry , this will give you some idea how far the industry has fallen in the last 20 years especially . My opinion is much of this decline is due to poor governance and as Reefton above has said the massive disconnect between the decision makers and the grass root participants . Good luck , you will need it , there is huge issues in this industry and getting all the details you will require will be no small task . -
It's what they do at a lot of the Aussie tracks , even Cheltenham in England have a long run in , also if i remember right it was the same at Aintree when i watched the National a few weeks ago . Unfortunately our lot aren't great for innovation , they lack vision therefor the same old same old is their manta .

All good , i was going to ask you for your trainers name . As for the gist of your post , one of the few positive things NZTR have done for years was the starters bonus , but like the morons they are they completely undermined the positive by taking that money off the winners prize , DOH , you couldn't make it up . Everybody's complaining that winning a maiden was barely covering a months costs so they think it's smart to give them even less . We wonder why racing is in ever decreasing circles .

I would like to see the evidence that owners costs are down 20% , mine aren't .

Hi Lena , if you really want an in depth and frank opinion you are best to go spend time at the training tracks in the mornings and talk to the struggling trainers and owners , then go to some lesser race days and talk to owners and participants there . But just don't let the governing body know what your up to , they wouldn't be happy about it . -
Are there signs of cracks in the Cambridge AWT training ranks?
nomates replied to Chief Stipe's topic in Galloping Chat
There are 9 more meetings programmed at Cambridge , thru till mid Oct , the last 2/3 will being the lightning rod for how numbers hold up . -

Compare it to the meeting it replaced from last year , oh that's right can't even find those figures . Or compare it to any other midweek meeting at this time if year . Might not look so rosy . Plus we haven't looked like having a meeting abandoned so far this year , as i've always said the year this was used as the reasoning for needing A/W's was an exception . -

Trust Huey , just show some trust , they wouldn't mislead by making assumptions without sound information to back any statements . What i seen yesterday was the win pool struggling to achieve even normal midweek levels , but hey i'm sure the bookies were killing it . -
Well Pike , trainers president , asked them to basically strike when we re opened after covid , went no where . They haven't got the backbone to speak out and publically shame the management at the worst time in our history , so no chance they will strike . Way too much self interest for them to strike .

I agree , it all feels too late , but i still believe that if we could get someone to really shake the tree and start some serious changes it can be turned around , not overnight but a progression . It needs bravery from industry participants , but as long as we could see a cohesive plan , or as Dave Haworth said a " believable " plan , it can be achieved . People will get on board , for the right person/s . Our biggest problem from top to bottom of racing and the TAB is a lack of real vision , racing in particular continues to do the same old same old . We know that doesn't work so why are they still doing the same things . If the rumours are true about any stake increases going to the middle and higher grades this just shows how out of touch they are , our higher grades aren't battling for numbers because of stakes , it's because most of our promising horses are sold before they get there . Most of the rest aren't good enough . Give owners a reason to hold on to their horses , being able to win nice money going thru the lower grades , fix the ratings so horses don't win 3 and suddenly they are having to race in opens or close to . Vision and heart , till these are found the downward spiral will continue .

Well as i have stated on here before good luck getting the Levin money and Foxton isn't owned by the club , as for choosing Otaki as the training hub as well as racing , again good luck . The Otaki track is stuffed , has been for 20 years , was once considered the best surface in NZ , but a lack of real maintenance and a series of hodge podge repairs , a bit here a bit there has left it easily the worst of the 3 options for training , can barely handle racing , plus i would like to know where everybody is going to go . Plus we have to stop using Aus as our measuring stick , because each time we do their stick has got longer and ours shorter , it is soul destroying to watch .

There is only one set of numbers that are going to matter to industry participants , race stakes , no significant increase will just ramp up the pressure on the future of the industry . Last week the David and Emma Haworth stable closed as a racing stable , David said he had given up waiting for things to improve or a cohesive plan towards achieving improvement . They had won 3/4 races in the last month from limited starters . David had less financial pressures than many in the game , just the beginning , wont be the last in the next 12 months i fear .

May be best if you take a short , or longer if you wish , break from the site , for your health of course , i am deeply concerned that continued and prolonged exposure to such hideous sights is going to be detrimental to your mental health , being the sensitive soul that you are , and of course seek professional medical help .

Would our NZTR be able to move a race meeting in less than 24 hours?
nomates replied to Chief Stipe's topic in Galloping Chat
It would fry their brains at the prospect at having to do anything at that speed . And to where ? the bog track in the next town . There will come a time when a meeting with black type has to be xfered or canned because of rain , say like The Ruder stakes meeting at Otaki a few years ago , went to Palmy , now the question is would it go to the grass track or the A/W . It would be interesting to see how the numbers would hold up . It has to happen in the Waikato this winter you would think . -
Dark mirage is not a bad horse , won a group race in Sydney last season . Will be interesting to see how this horse goes down in Victoria with Peter Moody , new environment , left hand tracks and a much higher quality of animal in the races he will be contesting . He is exciting and Aus needs the next big thing , so hopefully he steps up .

A bit like when the industry used to own their own buildings but in their wisdom thought it was better to sell up and lease what they needed . We know how that ended up . Now we barely have to coppers to rub together . And we're expected to have trust again that they are going to get it right . Trust is earned .

Don't worry about that smartarse , his problem is his head is up his own arse and that is the world as he see's it .
