The Winter Quiz of HARNESS RACING GREATS A-Z
Gammalite replied to Gammalite's topic in Trotting Chat
yep , the old boy got in the road a bit of Maori's Idol when that trotter was going for the record sequence of 25 wins in a row in a Moonee Valley Interdominion Final . Maori's Idol finishing 3rd to Derby Royale. Ranga , you missed this one , but when I give you a ONE word Clue , you (or anyone) will get it Instantly lol.... CLUE word = Glenbogle -

Last today at start 342. The driver lost control of his glasses or something down the back straight, hit a wheel and galloped out the back. more great Amateur Driver action. How they have that as tote races is a mystery. -

A is for 'Alexy at Addington' in NZ . just went around again today. A for average as well lol. 'W' could be a better lot of horses for the Quiz. Can anyone pick these W ones from the Clues? Q1/ This horse for Mr W .Butt, started favourite in a Big Adddington race after winning his heats. Battled into 4th in the Grand-Final. Q2/ A horse that raced in the Top class before his trainer was DQed, and had a few cracks in Aussie as well , with a big 2nd to the Natalie Rasmussen Champ a big feather in his cap. Q3/ A trotter with a Maori name raced for many seasons with distinction , even taking on Maori's Idol in Australia without success, but won quite a few in his day. Q4/ Another trotter with the most un-usual name,(and he's not Scottish either) made the Grand Finals at times too like Quiz horse 3 performing very well in the placings. and any 'W' Aussies in NZ ? Q5/ This horse, one of the greats of the track , made his way to Addington and made it three out of three with a margin of 15 lengths combined over the locals ... wow what a motor... Q6/ This great little Queenslander also took it up to the locals at Auckland with some great heat wins but succumbed to the might of Gammalite at the Big moment , and his driver bailed out on the home bend. -
Fields are smaller Oz usually so positions are taken quickly after the start. races much shorter too is a factor. so not usually a problem anytime. In the case you out-lined in the large trot field , it is an interesting case. Butcher obviously not wanting to be trapped 3 wide with 2 laps to go, was keen to get in the running line. also They are trotters (in this case) so can get off balance easier than pacers, a horse galloped so Punters are affected by that as well. and an experienced horseman fined for just trying to hold his spot. There's Not really an easy answer to this problem .....

Yep ..... great work Ranga . Q1 Young Quinn clean sweep of Interdominion at Auckland in Q2 horse Yulestar in photo with his trainer the late Lorraine Nolan, first lady trainer to win NZ Cup. Yulestar also won the Interdominion in Brissy storming home from 4 back on fence at the 1/4. to beat Courage Under Fire and co. Q3/ Mark Purdon winning plenty with Young Rufus. The Q4 Aussie Young Mister Charles running 3rd at Addington GF to Golden Reign then DQ afterwards. Gets the Ultimate revenge by WINNING the Grand Final in Perth a year later !!! (hope they swabbed him again lol........) -
sorry Mr Galah, have to disagree with that . 2 laps to go in race 6 and when the good Dr's horse galloped , the 2 sulkies were exactly alongside each other. Dr Chin had his horses head turning to the left trying to hold the back of the grey horse , and was off balance so went off-stride. there was nothing inside him along the inside , so his horse natural instinct would want to see him trot in 'room' and not rub shoulders with another runner ( Zac driving Mr Muscle.) I do concede that the $300 fine to Dr Chin was un-necessary. He has every right to hold position you would think. In this case it was to his detriment.

Well I don't know 'Y'..... but we better throw in a couple of NZ champions that both won the biggest race title there is going along with an Aussie who came up with the same massive accomplishment. Have a crack at naming these three 'Y' horses. Q1/ This bloke took on the World and even won a Miracle Mile from the outside gate at Harold Park. (a feat matched by Locarno for NZ as well ) Q2/ Photo Clue ....... seen here with his trainer after yet another Big win. Q3/ Young Mark once had a young horse who beat the quiz question horse 2 on a few occasions. and in true Mark legend style won the Derby, Messenger and Auckland Cup along the way AND the Aussie to have a crack at glory in NZ... Q4/ This bloke tried to be an Interdominon winner in NZ as per Gammalite style, but was beaten in the Grand Final by another Aussie into 3rd place. Then he was later embarassingly disqualified from that spot with a positive swab. -

A star of the show is Tony. Always has been. Fancy beating one of the best staying trotters ever like he did in the Rowe Cup. simply outstanding trotting. in time of 4 minutes. most pacers can't do that John Dunn might get more sights of Tony going past as well , when Highgrove and Double Delight meet in future clashes. Highgrove a fine Trotting Derby win recently but Tony wasn't far away with the filly. look out John.. lol. And don't back maidens . TROT TO CHEVRON for the leading Dunn barn, looked the goods in the first race tonight at Addington , but threw it all away late. That's too hard for Punters to take IMO. back to the gallops ... lol -

Yes in the early 2000's the large city 's of Cairns and Townsville closed due to lack of funding and not many trainers left racing in those areas as costs 'sky-rocketed' for 'everything' at the turn of this century. The 'travesty of Harness tracks' to me was the Closing of the Gold Coast track 2010. It was state of the art only 20 years old opening in 1990 and brilliant to drive on . Was the best , and in a growing city. The State government took it over at Parklands to build the Athletes Village for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the site. I still near 'throw up' as I drive past it these days when going to GC , seeing a heap of buildings mostly unused on that great racecourse. Albion Park and Redcliffe would of both 'been in bother' many times but Benefactors millionaires Kevin Seymour and Chris Garrard (horse and hound) have poured Bucket-loads in to keeping them both running. They have done an amazing job keeping the industry going bless em', and can only wish them a Champion each as reward. Kevin has raced Colt Thirty One to about 50 Albion wins and now has LEAP TO FAME , who could be better still..... -

Nothing , zilch , nada, got plenty of that lol. (need Amazing Dream back ? after those 2 big prices last year lol ) Hey a good draw does help , but TRIPLE EIGHT still won the FFA open from the outside barrier gate last Saturday against some pretty good ones too. so it is possible .... but unlikely lol.... Fields are out for Week 3 !! and CAPTAIN CRUSADER in much easier race (the 4 yearold Championship R5) this time round, and he 'Can Win' too, in this company. Bit hard last week. -

ABSolutely !! You could Always back all of those and get a run for your money. you can ADD in Jenner (in his younger days) , +Thriller Dee, Indette, Admiral Soanai, Landora's Pride for the north Island to try and repel all your good horses there you listed ........and of course the Interdominion winning 'Tussle' for the South Island and you would end up with.............. ........ALWAYS Having Fabulous Inter-Island trotting Fields right through the 80's !!!! We're down to pretty much Sundees Son and Muscle Mountain in the South v Bolt for Brilliance in the North these days ? just the 3 chances in any Group trots mainly? (but pretty good ones lol ) -

A true star of the track Paleface !! here he is celebrating a Big win at Auckland. But in true Aussie tradition (e.g Junior's Image at Addington) had this race taken off him for a positive swab lol. You know how us Aussies like to 'Tank -up' when away at the shaky isles for a holiday !! hahaha -

Yes a handy lot . Greyhound and Blackie were cleaning up the gaps from your selections here. Q4/ Stormy Morn had a very long career. saw him win many for Tony Perucich in the north, after starting out south. Q5/ Special Pride had a short but good career. including a Rowe Cup . Q7/ Speeding Spur for the Dickies, with his distinctive unusual head carry . Nose up . here's a pic. -

Some great 'S' for Supreme Squaregaiters on this Sunny Sunday quiz. Who can think of any of these from the clue.. Q1/ horse Number one under the Sun is indeed the best there is under the Sun at the moment. A fine son indeed. Q2/ This great trotter admired by many it seems , and made a great impact breeding as well from Roydon Lodge. Q3/ A trotter who just like the Aussie great Maori's Idol, was that good he took on the Pacer's on occasion. Q4/ This old boy was a great in the south island , then a great in the north island afterwards and along the way won 10 out of 20 Australian starts too. finished his career trying to come off 75m his last 2 starts back in SI again. Q5/ A rocket of a mare, that Wolfie often drove for an owner trainer who won the Rowe by many lengths in the slop one year. Q6/ The real pocket rocket who thrilled crowds with his sharp excelleration and went toe to toe with an Aussie Interdominion Hall of fame mare on more than one occasion. Q7/ This guy a double S named horse, with his neck stuck out straight as he did , won a great Southern Star for NZ and Some Aussie to of given it a shake in the shaky isles ...... Q8/ Graeme Lang a supreme trainer of trotters brought over the best one for the Aucklanders to admire. And didn't she just play with them .. Q9/ Like the Q8 horseabove , this bloke an Interdominion Trotting Hall of Famer !! along with Pride of Petite and Take A Moment. even though NZ bred , he was trained out of Aus to stop the kiwi Inter domination. Q10/ a tricky finishing one, this mare was looking for glory in NZ , but a Richard Brosnan masterclass on his great trotter, meant she was destined to only run a place at Addington. -

In-correct it seems. a battling 3rd only. LADIES IN RED perhaps the best in Australia , just now clearing out in the $300,000 Rising Sun by 4 lengths untouched to take her record to 23 starts for 19 wins and 4 seconds. Good quinella horse ? lol -

Nearly got there . The Cruiser coming in 3rd place. Rockin Marty 2nd for Aus to keep the Aussies competitive against the '10 horse Nz bred domination' in the FFA tonight at Albion Park. AND we have a winner !! ex-pat kiwi TRIPLE EIGHT (a visiting Vic trainer winning) from the 'Impossible' 7 Alley. for his 5 kiwi owners I think. how cool... -
Hoping you in front nicely from Addington mate. I'm quite confident LEAP TO FAME wins the rising Sun tonight at Albion, if you have a small winning margin today to play with . I think it's worth backing. Showing $8 on Sportsbet which I find quite astounding. Mind you i'm down from SIGH today costing me over 100 as silly jock should of won easy but rode straight into the back of the leaders in the straight R6 Caulfield. sigh...sigh...sigh.... lol

Spot on TW. You have cleaned up the 3 Aussies who had great records in Oz and missed in NZ. see you tomorrow for some great trotters. On the 'S' theme , the great kiwi SPIRIT OF ST LOUIS should be winning tonight at Albion tonight against all those ex-pat kiwi's in the Mr Feelgood Open. and my Best at Caulfield racing soon. SIGH in race 6. Mood's is unearthing another Sprint star seemingly.
