    Does it make sense having feature mares races at both Trentham and Riccarton on same day this weekend ?

    Wyndham have a $60000 race, the kindergarten stakes next week,many of they're other races are becoming very poor, the days when Baynes and Milne had good young ones going are gone, all they are doing now is benefiting Canterbury trainers, better to channel some funds into making their other races better, 6 in the Wyndham Cup, very average, even if the 2yos were racing for half they would still show up.

    No reason why they can't reduce stakes based on runners, surely 5 young ones running for 5 grand is better than trialing for nothing or simply staying at home. Plenty of times to race for more as numbers rise after winter.

    But if 200000 leave Auckland that still leaves a lot still there, they probably enjoy it with less traffic, the question still remains do the general public in Auckland like horse racing, you say the blues get average crowds, true as it is mostly but they still fill Eden Park for test or the Super finals, what would a average Saturday crowd be at Ellerslie ? Or Alexandra Park on a good night.

    Irrespective of what TAB says regarding my comments Ellerslie couldn't do any more to promote the meeting and the fields were excellent, but reality 10000 while still a good crowd, if it was, is still in the context of the population of Auckland rather modest and puts into perspective where horse racing fits in the community, a bit hard to get a line on the turnover with the world pool but the Derby was way more supported than the slot race.

    Today's biggest race stakewise had the poorest turnover at Invers today 7 first starters, nice work for the connections though.

    Old TAB is going to hate me but Westports tote turnover was far superior to Alexandra Park last night, and yes I am aware punters migrate to fixed odds to try get a better dea and its unfortunate we dont know the fixed figures, I don't understand why he keeps talking Auckland up, im not a fan of the place, just pointing that out, takes all sorts I guess, while Champions day has the most stakes ever, and Auckland looks like a handy crowd today there but Addington on Cup Day for me is still number 1 day for Horse racing in NZ and that's what happens when you have tradition.
