  1. There are sone very good teams who won't go to the World Cup, Italy, Ukraine are freely handy Chile, Columbia, New Zealand, Russia ain't going, and if FIFA do the right thing they won't be until Putins in jail or worse,, so much history, so many good players who never go to a World Cup, 48 teams for the next one, and I think they are gunna have pools of 3, why? As for England I love the hype about them for every major tournament, not based on much but a lot of hope, Germany have been a bit poor by their standards recently but 5 goals against Italy suggest they are on the way up, probably historically the best team on the planet, IMHO Strange irony Hungary didn't qualify, but the nations league means all games are meaningful I didn't see the All Whites live, listened in bed on senz, their sport coverage is pretty good, sometimes I listen to sport online, but sometimes watch highlights later, you tube, sitting through soccer day after day not for me, but do enjoy the knockout games, I'm the same with racing, can't watch racing day after day, need to be selective.
  2. Its a funny game soccer, never more funnier than when Iceland beat England at the euros in 2016 , one of the greatest sporting matches I've watched, on tv of course, but it shows the minnows can win, Iceland were a handy side at the time, The All Whites are handy but probably need to play more top competition, Costa Rica ain't a world beater, NZ were probably unlucky but it is what it is. On another sporting note I see Serina Williams is going to be at Wimbledon, when will she realise she ain't gunna get that elusive slam win? Even if she did win one she still ain't the player Steffi Graf was, she retired at 30, Williams is still trying at 40, she is within her rights to play but it ain't gunna happen,(the record. As for Nature Strip what more can you say, those straight sprints do make it fairer, that riderless horse though was lucky it didn't stuff things up.
  3. One would wonder what the TAB turnover was.
  4. A day and a half for NZ sport, lost the soccer, no suprise, lost the cricket despite scoring over 550 in innings one. Costa Rica aint much but enough for us, now they get to play Germany and Spain, Germany have just put 5 past Italy, a handy team. A bit different for the All Whites playing Vanuatu but maybe next time they may only need to win Oceania to qualify, a lot more poorer teams will dilute the product. Fact is All Whites, 3 games, no goals.
  5. Some horse and proves Aussie racing good if not better than the tofts. That rider less horse enjoyed the weight allowance, but was also a accident waiting to happen at the finish, i wonder if the rider picks up a riding fee.
  6. Apparently, Victoria Park sits doing nothing, Forbury is too at present. Trevira had reached his mark in NZ,under todays handicapping would have slipped down the ratings, they were selling them and they are selling them still. The sapere report that was done in to Otago and Southland showed the stats, only half the trainers, horses etc from 25 years ago, highley unlikely to get better, Forbury just started running a lot of below average meetings, strangely Auckland are following this model, even increasing thursday meetings, Forbury probably proves quality over quantity, 10 meetings of good quality better than 20 of no quality. Its easy to rave about the deeds of some of todays drivers, the name Williamson springs to mind but opportuneties are greater and the competition less in many cases. As i write half an hour to go in the soccer and as NZ are a goal down and dont score often it aint looking good but miracles can happen, NZ need one.
  7. He dont know if hes Arther or Martha, he might be a pain in someones arse, just not good being a pain for half the country.
  8. Strange irony Southland only had a 6 or 7 month season, never stopped them producing a long line of top liners. Now they race most of the year yet real top liners are few and far between. Trevira and earlier Hi Foyle were two just a bit unlucky to strike one or two better at their time. Mid seventies I got interested , those Forbury meetings leading up to Cup time were big events, even the North Islanders turned up now and then, look at things now, you do wonder where it went wrong, and it will keep changing, nothing stays the same.

    AWT

Only 2 southern horses went to Timaru last sunday, unusual but I bet none go to Riccarton, strange anomaly in the calandar next week, Oamaru race on grass next Thursday and Riccarton race on grass two days later, seems a bit odd to me but as I have said before, I know nothing.
  10. One would hate to be the person who misses the defining penalty, probably one of the most nerve rattling things in sport, so close but so far for 1 team but they had 120 minutes to find a winner, those games often can be a stalemate, playing not to lose, there is a lot at stake. If they extend the numbers of teams at the World Cup ,Oceania may have a automatic qualifier, not sure if that's good, NZ need to beat some team of note to qualify, Costa Rica ain't a power force in world football but more than a match for our lot, here's hoping anyway. Will be odd having the World Cup in our summer, June and July often has the best sport of the whole year, it's either the euros or the World Cup in soccer, Wimbledon is on soon too., sometimes the ashes in Cricket, helps to keep us going through winter. I often wonder if harness racing taking a break for a few weeks in the dead of winter would be benificial.
  11. Certainly would be good to diversify, added a second post coz I cant edit. Love chatting about lots of things music, comedy, politics religion etc etc Some subjects just cant lift off, a bit like a plane full of fat ladies.
  12. I know this is a trotting section but we should have a forum chatting about all things sporting, no one seems to go there. We got soccer tomorrow and wednesday, the All Blacks named and how appropriate that name is, throw in the cricket. We just need to get something started and then go from there. Be nice to change the topics now and then, a bit of variety would probably increase the traffic here. I've just had a look and sports general yarns sections, no one been there for 2 or 3 years, I like sports chat, world event ,general yarns, not just racing.
  13. Maybe his boss likes a bit of whipping.
  14. In a completely different tangent and it is off topic I see Trevir Mallard is taking up a post in Europe, hopefully he has rocket jammed up his arse and its posted to the Ukraine.
  15. Radio sport was different from sports roundup in as such that radio sport tried to be fulltime, and sports roundup was seasonal, and in many ways that's where racing on radio could still be broadcast and mixed with some online coverage, no racing on Boxing Day, strange,.weve discussed that elsewhere before. I always remember Alan Mac commentating cricket one day , and saying that Jock Edwards has just got going with a couple of meaty pull shots, always stuck in my mind.
  16. Alan Mac, can't spell his name, Phil Stevens Bryan Aldridge, I think, must have been on the radio in the background at many workplaces and holiday spots, no need to rush to the smartphone to get ya info., great days. Sadly radio sport wasn't really the same and eventually died, I maintain and always have the time they replaced Telfer with Devlin was the beginning of the end.
  17. You reckon listening to 1ZB and 3ZB was bad, 2ZA was even worse, I use to put my old trusty tranny up against a post and wire fence to get a boost, it never worked against a wooden one so I sawed one up for firewood. As for the old tv shows, they were good at their time but music and comedy will always stand the test of time, thank god for you tube.
  18. Unhinged, interesting name, you not related to a dunny door are ya?
  19. 3zb use to do the afternoon races, during the week you only got the results lots of times, we are actually quite lucky with all the info we have access too,( smartphones) but we are as a society all stuck on technology, not entirely convinced we are a better society though. I use to love sports roundup in the summer, could listen to cricket all day, it informed and entertained, trying to listen to racing on a smartphone to a simulcast, fuckin shit.
  20. Sometimes i can be accused of being negative but on some of your comments i agree. Nice to reflect, i think as we age we are actually in the best position to compare then and now, today its just more and more, but mores not always better. Rugby is no better, go back to 98 when the blues played the crusaders,{and 98 aint that long ago} the country almost ground to a halt for the final, played in the daytime, next week probably almost be forgotten by monday. As for trackside i just watched a few races and im done with it for the day, often only watch if nought better to do, use to like the trackside radio as we all know but i just tune in to other things now, makes one realise there are other things in life, horse racing aint so big for me now, sometimes wall to wall coverage does promote problem gambling but only winners get restricted, losers are most welcome, almost VIPs. The only time the wall to wall coverage is good is late on Saturday with the barrage of world class gallops from oz, late friday or sunday night barrage of dog racing, some might like i guess but ive never been a fan of dog shit. Jason Teaz friday show is ok, cuts out all the crap. Trackside is all about sqweezing every cent they can. One difference was the vhs videos we had werent horse racing.
  21. See the amenities fund is still alive and thriving,,maybe another club might get funding for a new door knob
  22. Hey people I was probably over the top regarding the racing being shit, that's a bit harsh but for the next month or three with the Sunday's at Addington is an indication of what could happen if all the tracks were shut and only a few left, if Timaru and Rangiora were closed then where would they race, variety is the spice of life. Sure it caters for the lower classes but one wonders sometimes if there is a bit of overkill, quantity replacing quality. As I said before the powers that be say the are doing well turnover wise, maybe they are, maybe not.
  23. There are some letters missing, I can't think what they are, can anyone help me
  24. Are you gunna turn out tomorrow and for the next nine weeks to watch the same old fuckin shit ? Probably not and probably fuck all else will. The people in charge say everything's going well but then as the government says the same I'm not sure if this is for real or just fucking bullshit
  25. Maybe people on the minimum wage or those on a benefit who are interested but cant afford horse ownership could help the racing industry in other ways. Maybe a grant perhaps of $10 000 a week paid in to a TAB account weekly on top of their benefit or a grant if they are working that has to be turned over before the next grant, the only catch is its only on NZ racing except for Australian racing on saturday afternoons after 3 15 pm.
