Surely these tracks like Reefton and Westport and Gore that have very few race meetings can get rid of the gravel and replace with compacted soil and heavy readylawn prior to a racemeeting? Have watched several races from both Westport yesterday and Gore today on the grass tracks! Both the crossings were absolutely diabolical with many horses galloping as soon as they hit them! Is this really fair on the punter, owners and trainers? Surely it can not be that difficult to sort this out so that the surface is not shifty???? Just shouldnt be happening!

It would be great to get harness racing back to where it used to be, enjoyable for punters and owners and profitable for trainers! It is good that they are going to try different things and they did do some brainstorming a few months ago, so that is good. What becomes of all that is going to be interesting, for me personally the gloss and interest has waned! I watch races on Trackside as they do not allow the unpoisoned ones oncourse. The thing is though that I dont know a single person who has tested positive to the very mild Covid19 and are still alive. It is pure and simple a marketing event for harness. If it gets off the ground will be interesting! It isnt going to actually do anything for racing if you look at it subjectly So you pay a massive amount of money to start in a race at Cambridge and you have the opportunity to win a substantial amount of money but also the opportunity to lose a lot lf money kf you are an owner! Will be interesting to see just how many owners are prepared to cough up and race against the AllStars horses! Yes good to see HRNZ trying new stuff for harness racing, but it wont bring in new owners or attract nee punters which is what it needs! Why you would run the event at Cambridge is questionable as well?

Gamma, Rangiora is probably as quick as what Addington is but generally the horses that race at Rangiora aren’t quite as good. I also can not understand why some trainers seem to want to nkt race at Addington. Motukarara always has full fields, and I am not a trainer, but it always seems a lot harder on a horse racing on grass than an all weather track.

Yes I would agree with you on Derek Jones and Tony Herlihy. Dexter and Blair will eventually be included in there even though Dexter is in the States. Maurice Holmes you would have to have in there as well for his driving rather than any training feats! Dont necessarily want to say it but that fellah from Rolleston that plunders all the big stake money would also have to be there for both driving and training. With respect Gammalite, I personally dont think Richard Brosnan is a NZ Legend! He had a great run of success back in the 70’s and 80’s if I recall correctly when he trained at Kerrytown near Timaru. Bonnies Chance etc. When he moved north to Auckland, think it was Pukekohe many years ago, he performed at no where near the level he did in the Canterbury region! Not too sure why he under performed for such a long time as the standard of racing in Auckland is so much less than Canterbury! He mainly trained trotters in the north and yet most of his success in Canterbury was with the pacers! Anyway, good on him for still being training winners with his son Emmett!

I personally do not condone cheating by any trainers at all! However there is an issue at play that has been around for awhile now and into the future unfortunately! It is pretty much impossible to make money as a trainer nowadays racing horses, unless you are a major stable. The young trainers that have been caught up doing things that are classed as illegal are all trying to make a profit as well trying to make a name for themselves so they can attract new owners. As we all know it is practically impossible to win the big stake money due to the AllStars stables plundering the majority of the stakes! It is pretty clear to Brodie that Harness Racing for the trainer with only a small number of owners is getting close to being over. Racing fields are going to be dominated by a small no. Of trainers unfortunately and as the older trainers move on to greener pastures, field no.s will struggle. These young trainers can just not compete with the major stables as the majority of their horses they are getting are normally past their best! Young trainers like Matt Purvis, Andrew Fitzgerald are enthusiasts that deserve their success and we certainly need to laud them rather than try and knock them out of the game! You would certainly need to be very dedicated to the sport to keep going for the modest amount you can earn from harness racing nowadays! Far easier and financially rewarding ways of making a living than working 7 days a week and generally long hours training horses.

Young Carter Dalgety is going to be a very successful driver in the years ahead. He has only just started his driving career and can often take some of our successful young drivers awhile to get the wins! However, this young bloke has started winning and driving consistently well from the start! His UDR is over 3000 and you would think he would maintain this by the way he drives. Yes he comes from a successful harness family and would’ve had plenty of coaching from Dexter and his dad Cran, and is picking up good drives, so he should be very successful, and good on him! He always comes across as a nice and intelligent bloke whenever he has been interviewed. We certainly need as many young ones coming thru the ranks to keep harness racing going!
