Happy Sunrise
This is an extract from an article today in The Optimist. As someone who doesn't know much about the inner workings of the industry or how it is run, I find it quite hard to comprehend to be honest. When some say turnover is up for a harness meeting, true or not - I don't know, it seems to fly in the face or reality or is the galloping code the only code that matters? How serious is the sustainability of racing in NZ? For the full article - http://www.theoptimist.co.nz
Rusty
Are the turnover figures publicly accessible anywhere these days? I miss the old school "Harness Racing Weekly". One reason being it was always interesting to see the turnover fugures for the respective meetings each week and year (season) to date.

the galah
There's not enough information in those 4 paragraphs to make any informed judgment other than to realise that within the tab, there is not always a united front as to whether the decisions being made are in the best interests of the industry as a whole. I don't know whether this is the case here, but human nature often sees people look after their own interests at the expense of the greater good. Its just the way it works and that can only be overcome by good leadership. The quote states a tab source says turnover is down a million a month on last years figures but makes no comparison to how many meetings, what type of turnover the figures relate to,whether the source is reliable, etc ,etc. It also states last years turnover was down on the previous year. To what degree. it may be that the decline is at a similar rate to the current year. Who knows. There is no mention of the effect that the new website had in turning off so many punters which one suspects is an obvious factor. The whole thing seems just a self interested comment which because of its lack of substance tells us nothing. 18 minutes ago, Rusty said: Are the turnover figures publicly accessible anywhere these days? I have always found that information is withheld so as to create the illusion that things are not as bad as it would become apparent if full disclosure occurred. In other words due to ignorance everyone is mislead to believe those in charge are making the correct decisions. Because how can you criticize something which you have no knowledge off. 1

Brodie
Turnover is down $1 mill a week! Is this tote turnover and fixed odds or just tote? It is secret squirrel with the TAB but I do know that the win and place tote pools are quite pathetic on most races nowadays, as punters can see that the returns are just not there as there is too much taken out of the pools. It is like betting on the tote on harness in Oz where there is nothing in the pools. I have a suggestion for the NZ TAB, you should be encouraging punters to offload rather than putting them off and letting them only have a pointless amount put on! Seriously stopping existing people betting is only going to have poor consequences. John Allen is jumping ship and asaville should be going with him. Easiest way of making money I can think of. Every time I win, as in last night with Kiwis are Flying, I take my winnings out and leave the 35c in and wait. Sure enough eventually another free bet arrives. Sublime.

Patience is a virtue, and who says "crime " doesn't pay, because let's face it the TAB are criminals anyhow. 1

Yankiwi
I suggest the TAB will only give free bets to those who are ultimately going to give it back anyways. Counterproductive any other way. I put a $20 note into a pokie last weekend while waiting for my pizza order to be cooked. I got free spins a couple of times (rather lazy ones) but ended up getting to machine up to $40. I hit the collect button & 20 x $2 coins popped out. By the look on the faces of others in the room, I thought I had done something wrong! Anyways, the pizza order was paid for from winnings & I've still got a $20 note for next time I'm hungry. ?
